(12 Customer Reviews)
From the opening jackhammer drums and escalating chords of "We Will Rise" (which then downshift to grinding dirge on the chorus), it is clear that Throwdown intend to take no prisoners. Lead singer Dave Peters, who sings like his entire body is being ripped apart by ravenous animals, commands the listener's attention on every song with his tortured scream-singing and the righteous lyrics of such songs as "Speak the Truth" and "To Live is to Sacrifice." Whether on the hectic speed- metal workout of the title track or the crunching grooves of "Discipline," Throwdown maintains a blistering level of intensity throughout, proving themselves one of the most intense, no-nonsense outfits on the hardcore scene.
Orange County, California has long been a breeding ground for some of the finest and most ferocious punk, metal, and hardcore acts in the United States. On albums like BEYOND REPAIR and HAYMAKER, Throwdown has made it clear that they intend to be a permanent part of that legacy, and with 2005's VENDETTA, they move to the front ranks. Throwdown's sound brings together extreme metal, pulverizing rhythms, and screamo theatrics to crushing effect, but it is their inspired, straight-edge ethos (reminiscent of bands like Fugazi) that gives them distinction.

Horrible There is no hardcore left in these guys. The music is so boring. Same old riffs heard a thousand times, stupid breakdowns, and Daves voice is very weak on this album. Theres no more heart in what they do. If they do make another album its prolly going to be a nu metal album in vain of there idols SLIPKNOT and there maggot crew. This album is pretty good, but haymaker was better Man, throwdown are awesome. Vendetta, in my opinion, is a great album!! In my opinion, Vendetta is another step forward for Throwdown. There are only two things I have to say to Alex in Italy. First, Alex, SHUT UP!! Second, don't judge throwdown by the way that they sound after putting out a new album. You might not like their new album, but you still have to respect the band!!! I respect throwdown for putting out great albums!! All I have to say to Throwdown personally is this. THANXXX for putting out such awesome albums. I will always support you guys!! Keep up the hard work!! Haymaker, in my opinion, was a little better than Vendetta, but I am not judging Throwdown by their CD's. I am straight edge, and I LOVE THROWDOWN. Buy Vendetta. It is awesome!! Or, buy Haymaker, if you want to listen to Dave talk about STRAIGHT EDGE in his lyrics a whole bunch. You can't go wrong with either album, Haymaker or Vendetta. They are awesome and I highly recommend both albums to anyone who is looking for a great STRAIGHT EDGE hardcore band. You will not be disappointed with Haymaker or Vendetta. They are both worth it!!! Buy them!! Submitted by XRileyX (Little Rock, AR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Vendetta
$6.49 Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone

| | Throwdown Haymaker CD (2003)
Vendetta
$12.45 Throwdown's followers insist that the Southern California residents are a cut above most of the bands in the metalcore field, which was extremely crowded in the '90s and early 2000s. And when Haymaker is playing, one is inclined to agree with that assertion. For all its bombast and sledgehammer brutality, Haymaker is simply smarter and better constructed than most of 2003's metalcore CDs -- which is saying a lot when you consider just how much of a metalcore glut there was that year. Haymaker isn't quite as heavy and dense as some metalcore outings; Throwdown give listeners more room to breathe and don't go out of their way to be exhausting. But while that room-to-breathe factor is a plus, it isn't the main thing that makes Haymaker superior to competing metalcore discs -- the things that make this album above average are the hooks, the vocals, and the lyrics. Lead singer Dave Peters favors the sort of tortured, screaming vocal style that metalcore is known for, but his screaming doesn't make the lyrics difficult or impossible to understand (which is a common problem among metalcore, grindcore, death metal, and black metal bands). You can easily ...
| | Bloodsimple Cruel World CD (2005)
Vendetta
$9.65 Bloodsimple features ex-Vision of Disorder members Tim Williams (vocals) and Mike Kennedy (guitar). Cruel World, the band's debut, is also the first release from Mudvayne frontman Chad Grey's Bullygoat imprint (via Warner). Mudvayne's sound is definitely a reference point for Bloodsimple, as is later VOD. As heavy as much of Cruel World hits -- the killer opener "Straight to Hate," "Blood In Blood Out"'s updated thrash swagger -- ...

| | Karen Akers Just Imagine CD (1994)
Vendetta
$12.35 Karen Akers relates the song choices on her fourth album, Just Imagine..., to her marriage to Kevin Power, which occurred only three months before the recording sessions. Thus, the material is, if anything, even more tilted toward the romantic than usual. But that is not to say that the emotional range and subject matter are limited. Rather, different aspects of a loving relationship are examined, for example in "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "I'd Rather ...

| | Kill The Thrill Tellurique CD (2005)
Vendetta
$9.39 By mixing styles as different as heavy metal, new wave, industrial, and alternative rock into their wide-open musical creations, France's Kill the Thrill have, intentionally or accidentally, managed to isolate themselves from all of the above scenes with an individualistic approach that has guaranteed them continued underground status in the process. This status is not likely to be changed by 2005's Tellurique, which, once again, proves too sparse for metal, too morbid for new wave, too humanized for industrial, and definitely too alternative for alternative rock, if that makes any sense. You can throw in any number of additional rock & roll subgenres and inspirational touchstones into this ...

| | Simple Minds Black & White CD (2005) (Import) Denmark
Vendetta
$14.05 With a sudden resurgence of '80s new wave from both revivalist acts (the Killers, Interpol) and reunions of the old guard (Duran Duran), the time was certainly right for other veteran acts to "get back in the ring," so to speak. And Simple Minds did just that, with the release of 2005's Black and White 050505. Founding members Jim Kerr (vocals) and Charlie Burchill (guitar) are back once more, with an album that manages to incorporate both elements of their earlier, best-known work (such as 1985's Once Upon a Time), as well as modern sounds. That said, Kerr and Burchill wisely don't stray too far away from their identifiable sound (à la U2's post-Joshua Tree work). This is no more evident than in the track "Different World," which doesn't sound too far off from a more polished Dandy Warhols composition, or the soaring album opener, "Stay Visible." A major factor in the group's creative rebirth can be attributed to the input of Bob Clearmountain, who previously worked with the band on its aforementioned 1985 album. Maybe something there's something good about all this '80s nostalgia -- inspiration for older acts to issue surprisingly strong albums, as evidenced by Black and White 050505. ~ Greg Prato
