| | Chicharones Pork Rind Disco CD Chicharones Discography of CDs
A preview EP for the Chicharones' second full-length album, which was released later in 2005, Pork Rind Disco continues the tongue-in-cheek grooves of the duo's 2003 debut, Boss Hogs. Rappers Josh Martinez and Sleep -- both of whom have ongoing solo careers -- mostly use the Chicharones to exercise their wilder sides in an atmosphere that mixes old school rap and party rap, vintage-sounding samples, and a fondness for porky puns, but Pork Rind Disco also hints at their more serious sides. The title track is the Chicharones at their silliest (it also appears in an electro remix at disc's end), but the other four songs are, somewhat surprisingly, closer to Martinez and Sleep's solo work, hinting in particular at the mellow, jazz-tinged feel of Martinez's recent album Midriff Music. "Can't Find the Time" in particular has this more relaxed vibe, based around a slow and soulful piano figure. Three of the five proper songs also appear in redundant instrumental mixes, but the first half of Pork Rind Disco is solidly entertaining underground rap that balances the silly and the serious surprisingly easily. (A note for collectors: the mixes of "Pork Rind Disco," "Can't Find the Time," "Guys Like Me," and "Red Carpet Treatment" on this EP are not the same as those that appeared on the album a few months later.) ~ Stewart Mason

| | R Kelly Untitled CD (2009)
Pork Rind Disco CD music
$11.18 After his aborted, internet-leaked 2008 album, 12 PLAY: 4TH QUARTER, R. Kelly busied himself with guest spots for Beyonce, T-Pain, and Kanye West, even offering a free download on iTunes, "I Believe," inspired by the election of president Barack Obama. While such moves insured that Kelly would never stray far from the R&B throne he's occupied for more than a decade, his 2009 reboot of 12 PLAY, UNTITLED, should provide more than enough reason for fans to keep coming back for more. From Auto Tune-laden crowd pleasers like "Outta the Game" and "Crazy Night" to rousing club-oriented numbers like "Echo," Kelly downplays the slower "baby-making" jams this time around for a set of largely up-tempo songs, capped by a sultry collaboration with Keri Hilson ("Number One").

| | Pink Funhouse CD (2008) Explicit
Pork Rind Disco music CDs
$8.99 Pink's insistently hooky, attitude-filled pop-rock has kept the singer a fixture on the radio and on singles charts since the early 2000s. The artist's fifth effort, FUNHOUSE, doesn't tamper with the formula: Pink's powerhouse vocals and in-your-face approach, backed by stadium-sized production, are in full effect on all 12 tracks. Even though the album deals primarily with aftermath of her divorce and includes serious moments of self-confrontation like "Sober," fans needn't worry that Pink has lost any of her chutzpah.
If anything, there's an increased sense of confidence ...

| | Jay-Z The Blueprint CD (2001)
Pork Rind Disco CD music
$10.45 THE BLUEPRINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
"Song Cry" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance.
It's official. With his fifth album, aptly titled THE BLUEPRINT, Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music. Laying a foundation for other MC's to follow, Jay Hova presents a lyrical masterpiece. And to make matters worse (for the competition, that is), he does so over a selection of the tightest beats (Jus Blaze, Timbaland) to come by hip-hop since fellow Brooklyn-ite Notorious B.I.G. changed the game. Jay-Z sets it off with a clear and concise statement of his purpose, "The Ruler's Back." From then on, each track dares rappers who tried to test his skills to answer back this time. There's also the cleverly worded (sort of a) love song "Girls, Girls, Girls," where Jay calls out every type of woman in the book. He limits the guest appearances to just one when he collaborates with Eminem ...

| | Skip Battin Skip CD (1972)
Pork Rind Disco CD music
$11.79 The cult classic 1972 solo album from Clyde 'Skip' Battin, who went from scoring hits as early as 1959 as part of the duo Skip & Flip to being a member of the Byrds, New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Flying Burrito Brothers! He also became a chief collaborator with Kim Fowley (who contributes copious quotes to the notes we've included here), so he definitely ranks as one of the key, behind-the-scenes contributors to the whole L.A. country-rock scene. Speaking of Fowley, his fingerprints are all over this album as a lyricist and quasi-producer, and Byrds Roger McGuinn and Clarence White play on it, too. But Battin's love of old-time rock 'n' roll and Tom Lehrer-esque satire are what make this record really unusual, throw some Byrds-like country-rock into the recipe and you've got one strange, intoxicating concoction. Collectors' Choice. 2003.
A true Hollywood cowboy, Skip Battin writes songs in a country-rock ...
| | Marc Copland Brand New CD (2005) Import
Pork Rind Disco music CDs
$13.45 Individual expression is an undeniably important part of jazz; it has certainly worked wonders for Lester Young, Cecil Taylor, Pat Metheny, Chet Baker and a variety of other distinctive, instantly recognizable heavyweights. But teamwork is also quite important; John Coltrane's modal recordings were not only great because of his mighty powers as a soloist, but also because of the strong rapport he enjoyed with sidemen like pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones. And teamwork is definitely a positive thing on Brand New, which finds pianist Marc Copland forming a cohesive trio with guitarist John Abercrombie and trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler. Neither drums nor bass are used on this 2004 date, and neither are missed -- Copland, Abercrombie and Wheeler say everything that needs to be said, and they say ...
| | Kanye West Late Registration CD (2005)
Pork Rind Disco songs
$11.89 Throughout the album, West merely continues to perfect his craft, slowing tracks down and speeding them up into an awe-inspiring mosaic. While his MC style is often discounted as being of secondary importance, he shines when put up against the best in the game, as with Common on the bluesy "My Way Home" or Nas on the lush "We Major." And in the spirit of Bob Dylan, West knows how to make the most of a very original voice. LATE REGISTRATION is ample proof of West's staying power.
Rapper/producer Kanye West's second album, LATE REGISTRATION, incredibly lives up to expectations following his universally acclaimed debut, THE COLLEGE DROPOUT, which took the art of sampling to a new plateau. Here, for example, "Gold Digger" features a sample of the legendary Ray Charles alongside actor Jamie Foxx in Oscar-reprising ...
| | Mose The Third Social Responsibility CD (2003)
Pork Rind Disco album
$6.69 Milleniums ago, the powers that be designed what was known as the caste system. The caste system was created to dictate the social status of people in the world by monetary means. This game of pimps and prostitutes further developed into social classes. Once this caste system modernized into social classes, the upper and lower classes were formed and were divided by the middle class. Citizens fought hard to become part of the "elite" upper class even if it meant turning on family and friends. The working class became known as lumpen-proletariats. Many of these members sought fame and wealth at any cost because of the "good life" that the upper class appeared to be living. Phonies who gained admission into the "elite" class became confused after realizing that their roots would always tie back to the lumpen-proletariat life no matter how hard they sought to escape. After realizing this fact, it was too late because the same roots that they attempted to abandon formed in to strong trees with branches that no longer reached out to them.Admist the anarchy and confusion, a child named Mose III was born. The blood, sweat and tears of the people were spat in his face as he trained for decades to implement order and social responsibility. His time has arrived... "I can honestly say that I can't describe my music. I don't sit up and try to make raps. I think that's what one does when they haven't come to grips with who they are as an artist. I create messages that provoke emotion. I won't write for the sake of putting together words that ...
