Trumpeter Sean Jones certainly covers a great deal of musical ground on Gemini. The music ranges from the hard boppish "In Her Honor," a hint of 1960s lyrical Freddie Hubbard on "Rain of Patience," and the medium-tempo "Blues for Matt B." to some more electronic, funky, and even fusionish selections. The music on Gemini keeps one guessing throughout and Jones plays well in every setting. The other soloists, which at various times include Tim Fuller on alto and flute, the tenors of Ron Blake and Walter Smith III, trombonist Andre Hayward, and pianist Mulgrew Miller among others, are utilized to their best advantage, but it is the warm sound and versatility of Jones that makes Gemini a consistent success. ~ Scott Yanow

JazzTimes (p.91) - "Jones has lovely passages. One of them, 'Gemini' ends the CD with a reflective gospel melody wrapped in his rich, broad tone." Purchase Gemini CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Sean Jones Eternal Journey CD (2004)
Gemini album
$15.19 When it comes to the Young Lions -- that is, retro improvisers whose straight-ahead hard bop and post-bop are a throwback to the '50s and '60s -- there are two equally absurd viewpoints in the jazz world. The Stanley Crouch/Wynton Marsalis crowd sees them as musical saviors who are rescuing jazz from the "evils and horrors" of fusion, avant-garde jazz, and jazz-funk; at the opposite extreme are avant-gardists who insist that the Young Lions are putting the nail in jazz's creative coffin. But truth be told, the Young Lions will be neither jazz' salvation nor its downfall. Innovators and traditionalists both have their place in jazz, and when it comes to trumpet playing, there is room for a risk-taking explorer like Dave Douglas, as well as a more traditional Young Lion such as Sean Jones. Eternal Journey, Jones' first album as a leader, finds the trumpeter drawing on the influence of Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Woody Shaw, and other big-toned icons -- Jones definitely appreciates the trumpeters with the big, fat, full-bodied tones, although there are also hints of the softer, more economical Miles Davis in some of his playing. Jones is no innovator; the Ohio native was born in the late '70s, but stylistically, he sounds like he just stepped out of the '50s or '60s. This hard bop/post-bop disc not only underscores ...
| | Steve Turre Spirits Up Above CD (2004)
Gemini CD music
$13.85 Trombonist Steve Turre pays tribute to his former employer, the remarkable multi-reedist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, on this sincere effort. Turre and an all-star group perform nine of Kirk's songs plus the trombonist's "One for Kirk." But although the music is certainly well played, one misses Rahsaan's miraculous innovations. It was logical getting James Carter for the date since Carter, like Kirk, can play any reed instrument in any style. But surprisingly Carter is mostly pretty restrained during the project, as if he is going out of his way not to sound like Rahsaan. His usual high-energy multi-style ...
| | David "Fathead" Newman I Remember Brother Ray CD (2005)
Gemini music CDs
$13.15 The bluesy, distinctively hefty tenor sound of saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman has graced many recordings by many artists, but playing with Ray Charles during the 1950s and '60s is where he made a name for himself. Since then, Newman recorded numerous albums on his own, some leaning more towards jazz, others towards R&B. This versatility enables Newman to create an ideal homage to Charles, one of the most eclectic and revered musical figures in American history.
I REMEMBER BROTHER RAY is a set of heartfelt, slightly bittersweet jazz renditions of classic songs from Charles's repertoire. For "Georgia on My Mind," Newman's smooth-yet-robust ...
| | Gerald Wilson In My Time CD (2005)
Gemini songs
$15.15 Veteran arranger Gerald Wilson utilized a New York band full of all-stars for this very rewarding and memorable project. Three of the selections ("Dorian," "Ray's Vision at the U," and "Blues for Manhattan") form a suite called "The Diminished Triangle," which is based upon diminished chords and utilizes Wilson's eight-part harmony. Guitarist Russell Malone is showcased on the ballad "Musette," a remake of "Lomelin" ...

| | Sean Jones Kaleidoscope CD (2007)
Gemini CD music
$14.69 Trumpeter Sean Jones emphasizes various vocalist friends for his fourth recording as a leader. His previous CDs have leaned toward a more produced pop-oriented approach within a definite modern jazz framework, and this effort leans toward a balance of combining those elements without being overtly commercialized. The first eight cuts all feature the singers, the most effective being rising star Gretchen Parlato. Her beautiful voice levitates Kendrick Scott's ballad composition "Journey," done on his debut CD, receiving a different, less expansive treatment, ...

Gemini songs
$28.89 Rudi Blesh's This Is Jazz radio show was presented in 35 weekly episodes during 1947, along with an initial audition show. The 36 shows are being reissued in nine volumes (four to a double CD) by the Jazzology label. Vol. 7 starts off with two shows by the regular band (cornetist Wild Bill Davison, clarinetist Albert Nicholas, trombonist Jimmy Archey, pianist Ralph Sutton, guitarist Danny Barker, bassist Pops Foster, and drummer Baby Dodds). The group romps on such numbers as "Eccentric," "Hotter Than That," "Sensation," "China Boy," and "California Here I Come." In addition, Nicholas is showcased on "Dardanella," soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet guests on "Love for Sale," and veteran blues singer Bertha "Chippie" Hill is featured on two numbers. The August 9 and 16 shows are unique in the This Is Jazz discography in that announcer-writer Blesh took the show to California for two weeks. On August 9, Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band (with trumpeter Andrew Blakeney and clarinetist Joe Darensbourg) was featured, while the August 16 edition had Lu Watters & the Yerba Buena Jazz Band. So this two-fer is valuable not only for covering the This Is Jazz radio series but also for giving listeners an overview of three important ensembles performing 1947 trad jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Paul Specht Retro-Specht (1925-1931) CD (2003)
Gemini album
$13.09 Violinist Paul Specht started leading bands in 1916, and throughout the 1920s and first half of the '30s, his orchestra was popular. Specht's ensemble performed and recorded regularly, being more of a dance band than a jazz ensemble. A small group taken out of his orchestra, the Georgians, was very jazz-oriented and featured the underrated trumpeter Frank Guarante as early as 1922. However the music on this CD is taken from a slightly later period. Reversing the trend of most other groups of the time, Specht's records of 1925-1928 are generally less interesting than his early Depression performances of 1929-1931. In fact, the numbers included here from the mid-'20s often are a bit corny, have unswinging phrasing and leave one waiting in vain for a hot solo after an insipid vocal. By 1929, the occasional hot solo was included and the ensembles swung a bit more, so the final dozen selections are of greatest interest, being fine hot dance music. Retro-Specht, although not essential, should interest 1920s dance band collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
Heavily influenced by the new sound of jazz, Paul Specht became one of the most popular and innovative bandleaders of the 1920s. In addition to successfully ...

| | Baby Bash Menage A Trois CD (2004) With DVD
Gemini songs
$15.85 The bonus DVD features live video footage of Baby Bash and South Park Mexican.
Mènage a Trois doesn't explain itself in the liner notes, the little "includes the hits..." sticker on the front, or anywhere else. It's a collection of Baby Bash's earlier works, all on the Dopehouse label and mostly under his Baby Beesh moniker. The recordings are rougher, more street, and way less produced than Tha Smokin' Nephew was, but Bash is a fantastic, charismatic rapper and always has been. Problem is these recordings flowed better in their original context rather than in this overly long, poorly paced compilation. A bunch of tracks from the Ultimate Cartel album are stuck up front, a good bit of On tha Cool takes up the middle, and 2001's Savage Dreams fills the last third. Going backward chronologically works sometimes for career overviews, but hearing the production get skimpier and Bash/Beesh's raps getting less fully formed ...
