The deluge of String Cheese Incident live albums makes a studio outing by the Colorado jam band seem like a rarity, when, in fact, the group regularly releases a disc of new songs every two or three years. 2005's ONE STEP CLOSER features the production work of Malcolm Burn (Daniel Lanois's protégé), and his warm, chiming vibe perfectly suits SCI. Here gentle organ and accordion textures envelop listeners, and the string-heavy instrumentation always serves the song itself rather than launching off into extended-solo territory.
Singer/songwriter Jim Lauderdale co-pens three tunes here, most notably the swaying "Big Compromise" (with guitarist/vocalist Billy Nershi), while Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter contributes to the "45th of November," a surging track that proves to be the album's highlight. Over the course of ONE STEP CLOSER, each member of the quintet writes (or co-writes) at least one tune in a wonderfully democratic fashion that embodies the spirit of SCI. Like Blues Traveler, the Incident saves most of its extended jams for concerts, keeping the focus sharp on this excellent and concise set of songs.

One Step Closer CD music
$11.79 After recording SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA--a two-act, two-disc epic about growing up in the American South--and then following it up with 2003's equally lauded DECORATION DAY, one might think Drive-By Truckers would be out of energy. But nothing seems tired about 2004's THE DIRTY SOUTH. In an age when some artists are building a glamorous "redneck" image, Drive-By Truckers convey realistic, hard-hitting truths about life in the margins of the South.
Here the Truckers unveil a dark, lean roots-rock ...

One Step Closer album
$9.09 For their first album since 1998's MUSICAL CHAIRS, Hootie and the Blowfish enlisted the aid of production doctor Don Was in an effort to get back on track after a four-year layoff that found Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan releasing their own solo efforts. Sounding refreshed and recharged, this roots-rock quartet hit the ground running, mixing in the twangy country-rock of "Little Darlin'," soaring "When She's Gone" (featuring background vocals by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers), and catchy mid-tempo rocker "Space." Rucker's exploration of R&B roots on his solo outing BACK TO THEN made for a ripple effect that can be heard on songs like the pleading power ballad ...
| | Lamplighters Loving, Rocking, Thrilling: The Complete Federal Recordings CD (2005)
One Step Closer CD music
$15.09 All 28 of the sides the Lamplighters recorded for King in the mid-'50s are here, including both sides of all 12 of their singles, along with three previously unissued cuts and an alternate version of "Bo Peep" that didn't come out until 1997. The group remains most interesting, frankly, for what some of the members did after this music was recorded. Thurston Harris, who handled the lead vocals on most of this material, went on to have a big, early rock & roll hit with "Little Bitty Pretty One"; three of the other members from the final ...

| | Daniel Trio Lantz Remember When CD (2008) (Import)
One Step Closer CD music
$14.99 On their second album Swedish jazz group Daniel Lantz Trio (Daniel Lantz, piano - Mattias Astrom, double bass - Daniel Olsson, drums) present an exciting selection of original material. Containing ten powerful and varied tracks, the disc boasts nine original compositions by Daniel Lantz himself, and one standard. The nostalgic title 'Remember When' actually points to the pianist's memories of the past, as the songs - musical souvenirs - were produced on various occasions over a period of eight years. Lantz' own voice and style of composition is highly varied and although rooted in a firm jazz mold, his creations are refreshingly enticing as they cross between jazz, blues, bebop to pop, film music, classical, latin, folk music and even world fusion. Piano player Daniel Lantz, above all a jazzman, is a multi-faceted musical personality that through his varied background in pop, rock, folk/ethno, classical, film and theatre music displays a wide range in his musical expression. This is made very evident in his ability to swing ferociously in fast tempos as well as finding meaningful, musical tranquility in slower numbers. Influenced by pianists like Bill Evans, Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Kelly and Keith Jarrett, Lantz' melodic lyricism, balanced touch and harmonic versatility on the piano make him a delightful performer. Alike many Swedish fellow pianists such as Esbjorn Svensson and Jan Johansson, Lantz' sound betrays a Scandinavian melancholy, coupled with the earthy roots of American jazz and blues, as well as a uniquely personal quality. Whilst possessing fine technique, Lantz never overplays, but rather shows full awareness of the importance of silence and careful phrasing in music.Lantz founded his trio in 1999 and has ever since continued to develop its expression in terms of interplay, dynamics and repertoire. Drummer Daniel Olsson's stylistic freedom and rhythmic imagination, in combination with bassist Mattias Astrom's driving and melodic bass approach, beautifully complements Lantz' improvisational outings on the keyboard. Unusually for a group that has been together for such a long time, 'Remember When' is only their second CD. Their debut-CD 'On The Tiles', where they join forces with Swedish top flautist Staffan Hallgren, was praised by critics for its impressive swing, and, somehow, comes across as a highly enjoyable prequel to 'Remember When'.The music on 'Remember When' is lyrical, moody and peaceful without sacrificing verve and ...
