Hovhaness draws musical and spiritual inspiration as much from eastern culture as from music of the western Middle Ages and the Renaissance. As a result, his music uses melodies and harmonies which are inflected with a sound which is not quite oriental, not quite western. It is pretty, consonant and exotic, evoking the timeless atmosphere of a Maxfield Parrish painting.
Yolanda Kondonassis, one of the world's greatest harpists, gives this music a most respectful and inspired performance, expressively accompanied by guitarist David Leisner, flautist Eugenia Zuckerman, and the string ensemble I Fiamminghi. This disc includes the world premiere recording of Hovhaness' 1983 'Spirit of the Trees.' Kondonassis dedicates it to the preservation of the world's rainforests and a portion of the disc's profit goes to their protection.

Musical depictions of exotic, sunny climes from Italy to the Middle East were a favorite preoccupation of 19th century French composers. Spain was a particularly frequent destination, and the allure of Edouard Lalo's immensely popular 'Symphonie Espagnole' for violin and orchestra was further enhanced by the presence of its dedicatee, the great Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate, who even assisted the composer by providing folk melodies which were to be incorporated into the fabric.
Recognized as one of the world's top violin virtuosos, Vadim Repin has a dazzling technique that betrays no limits, yet he also shows the ability to hold power in reserve when the music calls for it. His performance of the Lalo recalls descriptions of Sarasate's own playing, elegant, stylish and brilliant, in fact Repin even used the Spanish master's "Ruby" Stradivari violin for this recording. Elsewhere on the disc there is a sparkling reading of Maurice Ravel's gypsy portrait 'Tzigane' and a finely shaded one of Ernest Chausson's lyrical 'Poeme' that expertly tracks the work's voyage of dreamy yearning.
