There isn't a whole lot of middle ground when it comes to the music of Red Sovine -- you're either a soft touch for his brand of sentimental storytelling (usually involving truck drivers and unfortunate children), or it makes your fillings ache like you've eaten too much sugar. This compilation of 18 classic Sovine tracks from his years with the Starday and Gusto labels isn't going to convince anyone from the latter category to change sides, but if you're a fan, this is certainly one of the better compilations covering his career. Greatest Hits includes the teary recitations that made Sovine famous, including "Teddy Bear," "Giddyup Go," and "Phantom 309," and while his technique wasn't exactly subtle, Red sure knew how to spin a tale and make it memorable, and the fact he continued to have hits in this style for a span of more than ten years says a lot about their impact. This set also includes a handful of lesser known recordings that briefly grazed the charts, including a few in which Sovine actually sings, and sings rather well (his cover of "Why Baby Why" won't make anyone forget George Jones, but it actually charted higher than Old Possum's original, and Sovine had an unexpected knack for cheatin' songs), while Bill Dahl contributes a well-written biography of the veteran performer in his liner notes. While Sovine's early sides for MGM and Decca don't make the cut, Greatest Hits indeed offers up this distinctive performer's best-known songs, and presents them in solid form; if it's a shade short of definitive, it's as much Red Sovine as most folks will ever need. ~ Mark Deming

Upon the release of GREATEST HITS VOL. 2, Michigan's answer to Bruce Springsteen had receded into the Boss' considerably large shadow, thanks to a self-imposed hiatus that found him recording only two studio albums in the 1990s. Despite the seemingly short attention span of the pop music world, this particular collection presents a fine argument that may reinforce Bob Seger's stature in the eyes of non-die-hard fans that only know him from regular rotation on classic rock radio.
This compilation dips into Seger's periodic soundtrack contributions ranging from TEACHERS' piano-driven "Understanding" and the soaring MOR Martina McBride duet "Chances Are" ...

| | Toby Keith White Trash With Money CD (2006)
Greatest Hits CD music
$15.85 Less than a year after releasing 2005's HONKYTONK UNIVERSITY, country superstar Toby Keith unveiled another full-length studio outing. On WHITE TRASH WITH MONEY, the Oklahoma native draws from earlier phases of his career, while also heading into less-familiar musical territory. Keith slips into crooner mode (a la 1996's gentle BLUE MOON) on the pleading "Crash Here Tonight," and while he gets political on "Ain't No Right Way," the song, ultimately, proves to be a wistful ballad. "Get Drunk and Be Somebody" livens things up with a gleefully raucous vibe buoyed by prominent horn lines, while "A Little Too Late" mines an uncharacteristic "countrypolitan" vein, as Keith sings over lush orchestral backing. Though the rock-tinged side of the performer's sound is showcased on the energetic "Grain of Salt" (which features the witty line "By now you've observed I was a little over-served last night") and the straightforward "Note to Self," the set closes with three charming ...
