String Quartets
$7.59 Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import.
Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting.
All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find.
Recorded after the funky fusion of Head Hunters, Thrust, Sextant, and other electric albums, and before the dawn of "Rockit" and more commercially viable and hip-hop-oriented material, Herbie Hancock took time out in 1978 to touch base again with his piano. Recorded completely solo, and live, direct to disc, where the tape is rolling and the performance is recorded directly to a master acetate without edits or overdubs of any kind (further constraints of the technology permitted performances of only 16 minutes in length per side), this set was issued only in Japan at the time, just as the truly awful Feets, Don't Fail Me Now was issued stateside. This is the very first time this set has been available in the United States, and Legacy has done a fantastic job, lengthening the original album by over 20 minutes with the inclusion of four alternate takes of issued material f
| | John Zorn Masada - Live At Tonic 1999 DVD (2004)
String Quartets
$24.95 The world of modern jazz would be a very different beast if it weren't for the emergence of John Zorn in the 1970s. Unafraid to incorporate a diverse range of styles into his music, Zorn had drawn on heavy metal, punk, classical, and a number of other influences to help drag the genre away from its traditional leanings. Masada are one of his many groups, with a line up completed by Greg Cohen, Dave Douglas, and Joey Baron. This show features Zorn and Masada performing in their native New York City, at a regular haunt for the band, Tonic, on the Lower East Side. The concert was filmed in the summer of 1999, and sees the band performing with their usual enthusiasm, excitement, and ambition to push the boundaries of music back further than many of their contemporaries.
This beautiful DVD captures the band performing a passionate set of music a their home base in the Lower East Side, Tonic, back in the summer of 1999. Featuring: John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron.

$6.65 | | Sarah Brightman Dive CD (1993)
String Quartets
$7.25 Recorded with a large contingency of German musicians, British stage-diva Sarah Brightman's Dive is a loose concept album tied together by a common thread of nautical references. Opening with the short, spoken-word piece that is the title track, there are constant images of the sea throughout the lyrics. The material sounds like what you would expect from Brightman's ex-husband Andrew Lloyd Webber. It's all fairly pretentious power ballads, but there's no denying that they're melodic. Brightman has a powerful set of pipes and, actually, shows a good deal of restraint. There are several songs that are a cut above like "Captain Nemo" and "Seven Seas." She does go over the top on her cover of Procol Harum's "A Salty Dog," but she redeems herself with the closer, "The Second Element II." The song, a reprise of an earlier track, is a stripped-down, acoustic affair with a subdued vocal by Brightman. ~ Tom Demalon
