| | James & Bobby Purify Shake A Tail Feather: The Best Of James & Bobby Purify CD (2002)
Back Up Train CD music
$14.05 You couldn't ask for a better compilation of James & Bobby Purify than this one, which fits no less than 28 songs onto a single disc, all from their prime 1966-1969 Bell era. In addition to a wealth of singles, B-sides, and LP tracks, there are five previously unissued cuts, the whole deal expertly annotated. The duo was harder to fit into a niche than many soul acts of the era; although there have been some comparisons to Sam & Dave, at times their sides were more pop-oriented than what Sam & Dave cut at Memphis, particularly on songs with sophisticated production touches like vibes. At other times, though, they were indeed in the late-'60s Southern deep soul bag; sometimes some doo wop and older R&B influences ...
| | William Bell Soul Of A Bell CD (1967)
Back Up Train music CDs
$9.25 This CD is a classic example of '60s Southern soul. William Bell isn't quite as gritty as his pal Otis Redding; he's primarily a gospel crooner, although he's more than convincing in Redding-style songs such as "Never Been Like This Before," "You're Such a Sweet Thing," and "I've Been Loving You Too Long."
"Everybody Loves a Winner," the album's big hit, is an all-but-perfect mix of soul and country (check out the faux Floyd Cramer piano part), and the same could be said about the now-classic "You Don't Miss Your Water." Meanwhile, Bell's vocals throughout are extraordinarily intense, particularly on a spine-tingling cover of Toussaint McCall's "Nothing Takes the Place of You."
William Bell's history illustrates just how singles-oriented soul was in the 1960s. Though he'd enjoyed a hit in 1961 with "You Don't Miss Your Water," it wasn't until 1967 that Stax finally released his first album, the magnificent Soul of a Bell. From that classic and Bell's moderate hits "Never Like This ...
| | Sam Cooke Portrait Of A Legend 1951-1964 CD (2003)
Back Up Train songs
$15.75 Contains an untitled hidden track which follows "Jesus Gave Me Water."
Sam Cooke was a giant not just in the soul world, but in the larger scheme of American music. His melding of soul, gospel, and pop was as trenchant as it was revolutionary and influential. This unbeatable 30-song compilation touches on every aspect of this phenomenally gifted singer-songwriter's career. The romantic croon of "You Send Me" shares space with the mournful "Sad Mood," the romping "Twistin' the Night Away," and the moving social/spiritual statement "A Change Is Gonna Come" (this compilation is one of the rare collections to have this stirring and sought-after track). For pure fun, it's hard to beat the humor-filled "Another Saturday Night." Perhaps the master stroke, though, is "Havin' a Party." As no less esteemed a personage than Bruce Springsteen ...
| | Al Green Everything's Ok CD (2005)
Back Up Train album
$11.35 When R&B kingpin Al Green abandoned the secular world for gospel music, it seemed he'd left his old world behind forever. Indeed, Green became Reverend of his own church and recorded nothing but spiritual material for decades. However, the 21st century saw a turnaround in his career, and EVERYTHING'S OK marked the second installment ...

Back Up Train album
$12.69 If ever there was a pull-no-punches, heart-on-the-sleeve, B.S.-free rock band, Portland, Oregon-based quintet I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House is that band. From the band that shouted "Fuck Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church", in the song "Westbrook Baptist Church", standing up for unheard voices everywhere that detest Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church's godhatesfags website and general attitude towards those different then them. While also speaking out against the current presidential administration ("Things That Fail"), senseless murders ("Rachel Corrie"), rock stars ("The Ballad of Courtney Taylor-Taylor), and gun control (Dear Mr. Heston). I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House may not be as poetic as Dylan or ...
