That they were signed by P. Diddy to Bad Boy Entertainment might give one the wrong idea about funky teen group B5. In the tradition of the Jackson 5 and New Edition, the outfit--consisting of the five Breeding brothers--purveys flawlessly produced pop-oriented R&B tracks with a sense of charged innocence. They open their self-titled debut with a short, a cappella take on the Beatles classic "Let It Be," and never get much more controversial than that.
The first full track (and lead single), "U Got Me," opens with a vinyl crackle and a classic hip-hop exhortation, before harmonizing the way one might expect from five young men who have been singing together since their earliest days. The group proves it can fill the void left by now defunct Bad Boy teen band B2K on tracks like "Dance For You," do 1990s-style Boyz II Men vocals on "All I Do," and channel the Jackson 5 on "Back in My Arms," which even samples young Michael's "I Wanna Be Where You Are." On this outstanding first record, B5 hint that they might become one of the more refreshing voices in mid-2000s R&B.

B5 album
$12.05 The album's title track (and lead single) finds Lloyd paired with the sultry Ashanti on a serenely soft ballad that includes a touch of vocoder. Lloyd shows that his youth should not be mistaken for ignorance on a deft interpolation of Slick Rick's classic "Hey Young World," here titled "Hey Young Girl." And on "Sweet Dreams," Lloyd coyly and expertly mixes the innocence of nursery rhymes with darker passions. This duality defines Lloyd and makes his debut an intriguing listen.

| | Ciara Goodies CD (2004)
B5 CD music
$8.49 As a rare female voice in the world of crunk, Ciara is in the unique position to offer a counterpoint to the multitude of hits like Lil Jon's "Get Low" and Petey Pablo's "Freek-a-Leek," which feature men going into clubs and calling out any attractive female. On Ciara's breakout single, "Goodies," the singer coos sultrily--but forcefully--about her independence and how she refuses to be treated like an object, even enlisting the aforementioned Lil Jon and Pablo help out, producing and guest rapping, respectively. It's no wonder "Goodies" was a 2004 summer smash, with its singularly disarming combination of an empowering message backed by an intoxicatingly sexy beat.
Ciara's debut record takes its name and direction from the aforementioned hit, backing up her outstanding single with a slew of aggressive, seductive dance-floor hits cut by sweet ballads (a la Beyonce), as the vocalist asserts both her self-dominion and her natural vulnerability. It certainly doesn't hurt to have a friend in Jazze Pha, one of the ablest producers in the game, who seems to have an affinity for Ciara's every sway. Nor does it hurt to boast guest shots from Missy Elliott (on the "Goodies" companion piece "1,2 Step") and Ludacris (on the sinister "Oh"). With GOODIES, Ciara reveals depth beyond her potent first hit.

| | Mario Turning Point CD (2004)
B5 music CDs
$6.85 Mario first earned attention in his mid-teens with his huge hit "Just a Friend," a smooth R&B updating of Biz Markie's rap classic, and followed it up with a successful self-titled debut. With the shift into adulthood for his second record, Mario faced inevitable comparisons to another newly matured R&B crooner--Usher. Far from shying away from his similarities to Usher, Mario gets them out of the way on the first track of 2004's TURNING POINT, "18," where, with the help of Cassidy, he reminds listeners that he has "seven years to catch up" to the older superstar.
While Mario opens with that tough declaration, his forte is the slow jam, and TURNING POINT is chock full of them. He follows "18" with the album's first single, the sultry "Let Me Love You," which proves to be straight out of the Marvin Gaye playbook. Mario channels the spirit of Teddy Pendergrass on the remorseful "Couldn't Say No," and recalls Jodeci on the melodious "Directions." Mario also doesn't slip when presented with a harder hip-hop beat, as evidenced on the Juvenile-touting "Boom" and the remix of "Let Me Love You" with T.I. and Jadakiss.

| | Omarion O CD (2005)
B5 songs
$7.15 Omarion sets the tone for O on the opening track, "I Wish," showing a true maturity as he examines his own weaknesses (including his confusion about love) with admirable strength. The Neptunes work their magic and lay down a seductive backdrop for the able vocalist on "Touch." He reveals deep roots, hearkening back to a 1970s-going-on-'80s funkiness on "Never Gonna Let You Go (She's A Keepa)," which features a welcome guest shot by Big Boi. Omarion wisely closes on his strong suit with a spate of sweet ballads in the New Edition vein.
After gaining fame as a member of teen-pop sensations B2K, Omarion seeks rebirth on O, his debut solo record. Omarion acknowledges his past on "Growing Pains," where the young singer bares his soul in a sort of apology for ...

| | Bow Wow Wanted CD (2005) DualDisc
B5 CD music
$16.69 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
That Bow Wow had dropped the diminutive "Lil" from his moniker was old news by the release of WANTED, his fourth album. WANTED was released shortly after the rapper's 18th birthday, but if there were any questions about the legitimacy of his maturity and worldliness, the song "Big Dreams" should put them to rest. The song's narrative about the ever-present pitfalls of life in the 'hood is brought to life by the searing authority in Bow Wow's voice.
Bow Wow makes the transition to adult MC with ease, which is surprising given that he spent much of his early career in the shadow of his mentor Snoop Dogg. Still, Bow Wow proves himself a skilled prodigy. Snoop, of course, makes his appearance on WANTED, trading rhymes with Bow Wow on "Caviar." J-Kwon, Ciara, and producer/rapper Jermaine Dupri also appear here, but the guests are mere background. Whether boastful, as on "B.O.W.," or rap-crooning sweetly, as on the singles "Let Me Hold You" and "Like You," Bow Wow is the center of attention. WANTED is a ...

| | Trey Songz I Gotta Make It CD (2005)
B5 CD music
$10.59 Any young R&B performer that can get Aretha Franklin to introduce his debut album must be doing something right. Although Trey Songz's I GOTTA MAKE IT opens with "A Message from Aretha," an uplifting bit of advice from the soul legend, the record isn't an old-school outing; this is hip-hop-inflected contemporary R&B in the R. Kelly vein.
The smooth, catchy single "Gotta Make It" appears twice here, first as a collaboration between the gently crooning Songz and the lightning-fast rapper Twista, and later as a remix featuring more words of wisdom from Franklin and the steady flow of Juvenile. Other highlights include the charming slow jam "Gotta Go" and the infectiously percussive "Just Wanna Cut." Though Songz is just one of many up-and-comers in early-2000s R&B, he downplays swaggering bravado in favor of a more amiable confidence, and this quality makes him a clear standout in the crowd.

$16.39 Joy Wants Eternity are a Seattle-based instrumental rock group and You Who Pretend To Sleep is the bandâs mightily impressive debut record. The band plays gorgeously shimmering instrumental pieces much in the vein of bands like Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky. While the band may not be mining the most original territory, You Who Pretend To Sleep rises far above the gob of bands playing this style... The ebb and flow of the bandâs music washes over you in wave after addictive wave. Whether it comes from glorious ...
