Quirky, pixieish Mexican multi-instrumentalist Natalia Lafourcade followed up the off-kilter pop of her debut with the surprising decision to form an actual band, Natalia y la Forquetina. The resulting music is more rocking than that of Lafourcade's earlier solo disc without losing any of her individuality. The songs combine disco rhythms with pulsing basslines and analog synths, with guitars indebted more to new wave than post-punk. And while Lafourcade's vocals are a little more assertive and less chirpy than on her debut, even on fast, aggressive tracks like "Ser Humano" or "El Amor Es Rosa," she never loses her seemingly innate good cheer. There are some side trips away from rock, too, including several acoustic ballads and the closing track, "Un Pato," an interpretation of the bossa nova song "O Pato" on which Lafourcade sings both lead and backing vocals. The production by Emmanuel del Real of Café Tacuba is crisp and clean, letting the band's interaction hold the listener's attention with a minimum of sonic trickery. CASA is a more narrowly focused album than her self-titled disc, because of the relatively straightforward arrangements and limited instrumental palette. Some might argue that 15 songs over 53 minutes is too much of a good thing, and a few could have been shaved away. But ultimately, the disc only serves to prove that Lafourcade is a serious talent, and not the tool of heavy-handed producers.
Natalia y la Forquetina: Natalia Lafourcade (vocals, guitar); Chanona (guitar, bass guitar); Levi (flute); Yuno (accordion, keyboards); Alonso (drums, programming); Chepo (percussion).
Additional personnel: Aureo Baqueiro (acoustic guitar); MEME (Moog synthesizer).
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Natalia Lafourcade Casa Songs Casa Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Hands Down! mexican talent continues to growth I must say, this album is not nearly as good as the first one. But let me first explain that "Natalia LaFourcade" was a brilliant album, of a world-class calibre.
I don't know if Natalia truly is a singer-song writer; the complexity and maturity of the songs and the craft of the compilations led me to question how an 18 year old girl could originate such wonderful music. I have never seen her in concert: perhaps her performance may yet verify the veracity of this claim. Nonetheless, the resulting "Natalia Lafourcade" was a great flow of melody and song. It was, in effect a great delicacy of a promising young artist.
To return to the current disc, let me praise the courage of all the artists and producers. Despite falling short of the first production, "Casa" includes the bossa nova roots (O Pato, a previous production) as well new experiments like "Tic Tac". The power of her voice can be heard in "Cuarto Encima", and "Casa" is a feel-good romantic song in which the same voice seems as smooth as silk. This continues a trend in the improvement of the quality of Mexican music, of what once was a romantic-ballad wasteland during the 70's and the 80's.
Natalia has been compared to Bebe, the flamenco fusion artist. This comparison must be based in talent alone, as the music genres are quite different. Julieta Venegas, a closer comparison, succeeds much like Natalia in maintaining a distinct musical character. Bebel Gilberto also comes to mind, for the exact same reason.
No matter what genre you prefer, however, I dare say that you would be pleased to hear the soft melody of Natalia's voice. Don't be fooled by her young looks: both her albums denote a complexity often lacking in young pop stars. But don't take my word for it. Buy it, and make your own judgment. I doubt you will be disappointed.

$7.35 Olga Tañón's continuing search for pop-crossover equilibrium again misses its mark on Sobrevivir, another ill-received pop album that resulted in a couple major hits ("Asi Es la Vida" and "No Podras") yet still angered her longtime fans, who wanted more merengue, not more pop. Past albums like Te Acordarás de Mí (1998) and Yo por Ti (2001) had been mixed bags, interweaving tropical music with ballads and pop, but Sobrevivir isn't even a mixed bag: it's a pop album through and through. Sure, there are some tropical-styled dance songs -- and good ones, at that -- namely "Caramelo" ...

Casa CD music
$9.09 Perky singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Natalia Lafourcade came out of nowhere in 2003 with this chirpy yet surprisingly self-assured debut. Primarily produced by Loris Ceroni, who'd also worked with the substantially harder-rocking Alejandra Guzmán, the album nevertheless reflects Lafourcade's sensibility throughout. Songs combine acoustic guitar and a strong bossa nova influence with dashes of turntable, electronic ...

$13.49 Ray Russell has had quite the glittering career. Setting off at age 15 with the John Berry Seven, the guitarist went on to play with the Graham Bond Organisation and then Georgie Fame & the Blue Flames. Eventually, Russell would lend his talents on-stage and/or in the studio to a plethora of performers, from Tina Turner to Lulu, the Bee Gees to Phil Collins, and branching out in the '70s to compose for the small screen. Amidst this busy career, Russell also put together the odd band, like the Running Man, whose sole, eponymous album was released with little ...

$13.25 You would think that by their seventh album Australian pop/rock giants the Lucksmiths would have run clear out of the clever, elliptical lyrics and catchy melodies that have been intoxicating listeners since the band's debut in 1993. Not so. Even frontman Tali White's side project, the Guild League, which released records in 2002 and 2004, couldn't deplete the endless cache of near-perfect pop songs just waiting to be put to tape/hard drive in anticipation of the aptly titled Warmer Corners. Like 2003's Naturaliste, White, guitarists Marty Donald and Louis Richter, and bass player Mark Monnone have crafted another shimmering collection of road trips put to music that balances wistful romanticism with mischievous grins, resulting in a record that manages to introduce just enough spice without ruining a reliable dish that some would deem perfect just the way it is. Producer Craig Pilkington's melodic brass and string arrangements are more prevalent this time around, swaying in ...
