Crushing The World
$10.45 Prolific director John Carpenter takes on the vampire genre in his action-horror film VAMPIRES. Bitter, tough-as-nails vampire hunter Jack Crow (James Woods) leads a specialized team, funded by no less than the Vatican, that is dedicated to destroying the race of vampires that inhabit the earth. The team is successful, and becomes lazy in its success, eventually falling victim to an elaborate ambush set up by a powerful master vampire. Crow and two others of his team are the only survivors, ...

| | Anthrax Greater Of Two Evils CD (2004)
Crushing The World
$9.99 If any group deserves to be renowned as "the people's metal band" it is surely Anthrax. With the exciting notion of re-recording a set of their 1980s-era material (when the lineup featured frontman Neil Turbin, followed by longtime singer Joey Belladonna), New York thrash-scene veterans turned to the fans to vote for the songs they wanted to hear interpreted by Anthrax 2004. Taking this ideal of metal democracy even further, Anthrax invited lucky contest winners to join the group as spectators for the sessions.
The result, THE GREATER OF TWO EVILS, is a live-to-tape performance, equally raw and refined, with very few tweaks to the original arrangements. Inspiring versions of "Caught in a Mosh," "Madhouse," and "I Am the Law" attest to the enduring appeal of Anthrax's early material. Diehard fans will love the cleverly tagged main riff from "Time" (PERSISTENCE OF TIME), used at the end of "N.F.L.," and the hidden bonus track ...

$11.25 "You Got Me" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance By Duo Or Group. THINGS FALL APART was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.
Hip-hop is about presence. Whether party- or street-oriented, it tends to keeps its listeners firmly centered in their own skin: hands in the air, guard your grill, watch your back. In spite of the blunted ethos of the late '90s and the emergence of trip-hop, it's a rare hip-hop record that causes your eyes to go out of focus and your brain to operate freely in that space that makes us describe music as "deep."
THINGS FALL APART achieves that distinct sort of transcendence perhaps because it is not trying to save, reinvigorate, or resurrect the artform. As the title (taken from Chinua Achebe's novel on the loss of traditional African culture during colonization) suggests, the record takes the death of hip-hop as its starting point. Where earlier Roots albums captured the live feeling of the open mic/jam sessions for which they are now internationally famous, TFA adds a newer wrinkle of arrangement and studio mastery. The layers and echoes occasionally (as on "100% Dundee") give you the sensation that you're wandering through one of those jam sessions in a detached, even feverish state--a perfect snapshot of hip-hop on the eve of the millennium.
