Spirit Dreams album
$11.45 Of all British rock's least enviable exports, the national predilection for faceless pop stars -- light of ideas, big on gimmicks, and short of substance -- has always baffled Anglophiles, even as the Anglos themselves send them rocketing chartwards. In the mid-'70s, Tina Charles was certainly the reigning queen of such creations, a sub-disco pop diva who, though she never dented a chart stateside, took six singles into her native Top 30. This, her 1976 debut album, was titled for the positively enormous number one hit that launched that sequence. Pure period disco, with soaring strings, chukka-chukka guitar, and all the right bells and whistles, it must be confessed that it has some charm. Unfortunately, Charles herself doesn't have much of a voice, singing straight from the throat and sounding painfully strangled. It can't have felt good. "I Love to Love" is her album, if not her entire career's, highlight. The rest of this set revolves around lightly plodding pop with just a hint of the hip frills that kept the kiddies dancing, overlaid with the sub-Walter Murphy orchestrations of producer Biddu. Best known for his hand on Carl Douglas' 1975 standard "Kung Fu Fighting," Biddu's slick hand is seldom far from the crime scene, and often painfully obvious -- the hyper-kung-fu'd intro to "Take All of Me" is simply his crassest operation. Occasionally, ...
| | Postal Service Give Up CD (2003)
Spirit Dreams CD music
$11.55 A side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who formerly played with synth-poppers Figurine but now records as Dntel, the Postal Service creates bedroom electronica with surprising emotional pull on GIVE UP. Ten tracks lyrically convey both a youthful ennui and the nostalgic ache of longing. Tamborello creates a tense sonic space that allows Gibbard's spare yet careful guitar to occasionally chime in and cut the tension.
While Tamborello's sculpted electronics hearken back to the minimalism of early Depeche Mode, Gibbard's expressively fey vocals and emotional sentiments lend a warm, comforting contrast to the machine-age chilliness (as do the occasional backing vocals from Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis). This contrast is best illustrated on "We Will Become Silhouettes," when Gibbard sings "[A]nd ...

| | Front 242 Moments CDs (2008) Limited Edition
Spirit Dreams CD music
$25.85 Issued in 2008, MOMENTS. presents the veteran Belgian techno act Front 242 performing live. Given the band's mechanistic inclinations, the tracks on this set often sound like studio recordings, as evinced on the ominous "Until Death" (from 1988's FRONT BY FRONT) and the pulsing "Take One," a single dating back to the early `80s.
Seeing as how analog synthesizers started making a comeback in 2006/2007 after years of digital and laptop dominance had wiped them off the scene, the veteran Belgian industrial group Front 242 decided to re-load their early analog material into their new gear and head out on the road for what they called the "Worldwide Vintage Tour." All sounds were "carefully re-designed" to "match the spirit of their time" and while the band and their loyal fan base clog Internet message boards with discussions on how everything here is "re-invented," Moments... isn't much more than a live album with the usual updates. The good news is that it's a thoroughly exciting live album where classics like "U-Men," "Body to Body," and "Headhunter" sound louder, punchier, and more aggressive than they ever have before. The original recordings remain definitive as they are more complex and textured, but longtime fans will find their jaws on the floor as soon as they read "Funkahdafi" on the track list. It's just one of the well-chosen, surprise revivals that show up on the album's second-half, but anyone thrilled to see "Rain" in a rare set list appearance will be disappointed by the clumsy performance. Otherwise, this is just what the fan ordered, delivering on the opening number's promise of "We gonna bring you happiness." [A limited-edition, three-CD version was also released with a bonus CD that ...
| | Barbara Carroll This Heart Of Mine CD (1994)
Spirit Dreams music CDs
$9.55 This is one of the better later recordings by Barbara Carroll. A bop-based pianist and a cabaret singer, Carroll balanced her two very different skills quite well throughout the date. There are a few instrumentals along the way (including "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Lester Leaps In") which team her with Jerome Richardson (heard on tenor and alto) and Art Farmer (on the trumpet) along with drummer Joe Cocuzzo and either Jay Leonhart or Frank Tate on bass. The overall music is more jazz-oriented than some of Carroll's recordings and her soft-spoken vocals are generally a delight; however, it is her swinging piano that consistently takes honors. A fine all-around set that serves as a good introduction to the music of Barbara Carroll. ~ Scott Yanow
Recorded at Hip Pockect Studios and Daiichi Oshko Studios, New York, New York between May & November 1993.
Personnel: Barbara Carroll (vocals, piano); Jerome ...

Spirit Dreams music CDs
$15.15 The Residents are not only the longest-lived of the many absurdist rock bands that emerged from the wreckage of the 1960s, they are also the most consistently interesting. Who else would have recorded an entire album of parodies based on Meet the Beatles, or a multi-part opera about moles, or a musical ethnography of Eskimos (complete with a disco remix EP)? Icky Flix itself is a DVD-only multimedia project, originally released in early 2001, that collects and expands on musical and video material taken from various periods in the band's career; all of the songs were rearranged and re-recorded for Icky Flix. This CD is an audio distillation that includes such blasts from the past as "The Third Reich 'n' Roll" and "Songs for Swinging Larvae" (originally recorded by labelmates Renaldo and the Loaf), as well as the notorious entirety of a 20-minute song cycle entitled "Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?" The music is, of course, utterly bizarre, though sometimes -- as on the strangely cathartic "Just for You (Disfigured Night Part 7)" -- surprisingly accessible. For better or worse, there's no one else remotely like them. ~ Rick Anderson
Icky Flix was originally released as a DVD in 2001. It featured classic and new video-works of The Residents. Since the many of the original music-recordings were in stereo, The Residents re-recorded their ...
