As even the title states, STRICTLY BUSINESS is a no-nonsense mission statement from EPMD ("Eric and Parrish Makin' Dollars"), a straightforward, seamlessly produced piece of rap history. As the title track makes clear, STRICTLY BUSINESS was all about setting the standard for rap's burgeoning pop dominance. Eric's laid back vocals contrast his partner's more staccato delivery. If most musical projects aim for at least a measure of popular notoriety, the clandestine U.K. producer known as Burial seems to thrive on self-imposed anonymity. In interviews, the London-based dubstep artist explains his willful obscurity as an effort to draw a formal boundary between underground and pop--to effectively become "untrackable, unreadable, just a distant light." Whether this is pure hype-sheet driven strategy or a bona fide lob at the music business's cult of personality makes little difference; the immersive, emotive music found on his second album, UNTRUE, evinces a true perfectionist's touch. Drawing upon the euphoric "feminine pressure" vocals of 2-step garage and the malevolent bass rumble of darkside drum & bass, UNTRUE both elaborates upon and conflates genre clichés with a mix of irreverent deconstruction and reverential homage.
As in his eponymous debut, UNTRUE is daubed in a grainy, lo-fi ambience that casts a sinister fog over the rhythmic foreground. Ominous creaks, pops, and drizzles lurch furtively from some void, creating crackly accents or yawning, metallic squeaks. On "Ghost Hardware" the staccato syncopations of garage are either distended into growling bass undertow, or crumpled into shards of asymmetrical flourish. This is one of the better later recordings by Barbara Carroll. A bop-based pianist and a cabaret singer, Carroll balanced her two very different skills quite well throughout the date. There are a few instrumentals along the way (including "The Way You Look Tonight" and "Lester Leaps In") which team her with Jerome Richardson (heard on tenor and alto) and Art Farmer (on the trumpet) along with drummer Joe Cocuzzo and either Jay Leonhart or Frank Tate on bass. The overall music is more jazz-oriented than some of Carroll's recordings and her soft-spoken vocals are generally a delight; however, it is her swinging piano that consistently takes honors. A fine all-around set that serves as a good introduction to the music of Barbara Carroll. ~ Scott Yanow

The Residents are not only the longest-lived of the many absurdist rock bands that emerged from the wreckage of the 1960s, they are also the most consistently interesting. Who else would have recorded an entire album of parodies based on Meet the Beatles, or a multi-part opera about moles, or a musical ethnography of Eskimos (complete with a disco remix EP)? Icky Flix itself is a DVD-only multimedia project, originally released in early 2001, that collects and expands on musical and video material taken from various periods in the band's career; all of the songs were rearranged and re-recorded for Icky Flix. This CD is an audio distillation that includes such blasts from the past as "The Third Reich 'n' Roll" and "Songs for Swinging Larvae" (originally recorded by labelmates Renaldo and the Loaf), as well as the notorious entirety of a 20-minute song cycle entitled "Whatever Happened to Vileness Fats?" The music is, of course, utterly bizarre, though sometimes -- as on the strangely cathartic "Just for You (Disfigured Night Part 7)" -- surprisingly accessible.
