A straightforward collection of cover songs (most of which date from the 1990s), COVERING THE BASES doesn't break any new ground and isn't trying to. It's merely Arroyo, a talented guitarist with a gravelly voice perfectly suited to the music, singing some of his favorite tunes, and pouring his soul in every one. He even occasionally inserts his own little touches, accentuating the demented voices in the breakdown of the Foo Fighters' "Everlong" (with help from writer Stephen King) , or adding his own elegant coda to Pearl Jam's "Black." Arroyo closes the record on a note that should please Sox fans--joined by fellow Soxer Johnny Damon and others, he affectionately belts out "Dirty Water," a team theme.
Just shy of a year after the Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 (their first taste of that glory in nearly a century), Red Sox pitcher Bronson Arroyo furthered the most storied rivalry in sports history. Arroyo followed New York Yankees centerfielder and fellow guitar player Bernie Williams's Verve debut THE JOURNEY WITHIN with his own album, COVERING THE BASES. The releases befit the personalities of the two teams: where Williams's was a sober, serious jazz affair, Arroyo's spills out loosely, like the Sox sometimes do to the bars outside Fenway Park for a post-game celebration.
Personnel include: Bronson Arroyo (vocals); Amy Keys (vocals); Tim Pierce (acoustic guitar); Michael Landau (electric guitar); John "J.T." Thomas (Hammond b-3 organ); Leland Sklar, Mike Inez (bass guitar); Kenny Aronoff (drums); David Isaacs, Lenny Dinardo, Johnny Damon, Kevin Youkilis (background vocals).

| Covering The Bases Music Review Average Rating: (3.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A Red Sox fan must! Bronson Arroyo can sing! This is a great cd for Sox fans - they can't trade him now....
Although I didn't care for some of the cuts, I found enough to enjoy - I especially liked "Dirty Water" - the voices of Kevin Youkilis, Johnny Damon, etc. was a nice touch.

Well Worth It This CD is great. Not only a talented pitcher, but an unbelievable singer. I saw him play at the Hot Stove Cool Music concert this year, and was very impressed. Had to hear the CD & was pleased. Love Vertical Horizons Best I ever had. Love Bronson's even more. Submitted by blt0299 (Red Sox Nation, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Bad CD Attempt to make money off good songs from the 90's. Bronson does not do the songs justice with his unoriginal covers. I would return the CD but I already broke it in anger. Submitted by qayin (Banff, AB, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success ...

Covering The Bases
$13.58 Georgia-based psychedelic rock band (calling them a metal act seems very reductive, though there's some seriously headbangable material on this disc) Baroness has made a subtle but unmistakable evolutionary leap on this, their second full-length and a clear companion piece to 2007's RED ALBUM. It's hard to say exactly what new guitarist Pete Adams has brought ...

| | Flight Of The Conchords I Told You I Was Freaky CD (2009) Digipak
Covering The Bases
$12.44 After a glorious first season that earned the HBO show six Emmy nominations, Flight of the Conchords' second run didn't quite pack the same comedic punch. Some would say it was because the premise lost its luster, but it was mostly because the music just wasn't as strong. Most of the songs in Season One were pre-written and hashed out over years of stand-up, and for Season Two, Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie were in a time crunch: forced to write a dozen or so funny songs and ten episodes from scratch. Considering the circumstances, FOTC's second Sub-Pop outing, I TOLD YOU I WAS FREAKY, has some worthwhile moments. In the R. Kelly-based "We're in Love with a Sexy Lady," Bret and Jemaine debate semantics while trying to determine if they're after the same lazy-eyed girl. "When'd you meet this lady?/Then./When?/Then./Right then?/Right then./Where?/There./Over ...
