(22 Customer Reviews)
Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While there are some fairly mainstream moments here that wouldn't ruffle the feathers of, say, the average Kenny Chesney fan, WASTED boasts plenty of smart, sassy tunes brimming with lyrical witticisms worthy of Tom T. Hall or Shel Silverstein. "Alcohol," for example, is a first-person narrative from the beverage's point of view, and in retrospect it's shocking that it took this long to get written. Guest shots from both Dolly Parton and Alan Jackson show that Paisley's work has earned respect from disparate corners of the country scene, a respect that's amply justified by TIME WELL WASTED.

Rolling Stone (No. 983, p.108) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...[A] cowboy-hat guy that even city-slickers can love." Entertainment Weekly (No. 834, p.141) - "...[B]etween his penchant for comedy, honest romanticism, and fiery Fender Telecaster picking, Paisley's all about the joie shucks de vivre...." - Grade: A- Mojo (Publisher) (p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 - "One of the most potent new names listed among the heirs to George Jones and Merle Haggard, Paisely's guitar-playing alone borders on the sensational..." Here's a story you've heard a thousand times; an artist makes headway in the world of contemporary country pop while maintaining an intrinsic quirkiness and a commitment to real country roots. The difference here is that in Brad Paisley's case it's actually the truth, not just a marketing ploy. While there's a modicum of pop appeal and everyman sensibility to which Paisley's success can be attributed, he's no "hat act." His sense of humor (displayed not only in his lyrics, ...

If Brad Paisley did not exist it would be necessary to invent him. He stands at the crossroads between the hipster realms of alt-country and the proletarian climes of mainstream Nashville. He's too close to the middle of the road to ever be drawn to the No Depression crowd's collective bosom, but he's miles ahead of the country assembly line. On his third album he continues to do things nobody else in the Nashville hierarchy does; play a number of his own instruments, write almost all his own songs, use his own band instead of the same studio vets ...
| | Brooks & Dunn Hillbilly Deluxe CD (2005)
Time Well Wasted music CDs
$9.99 Thanks to the newfound success of "real" country singers like Gretchen Wilson and Toby Keith, not to mention the neo-outlaw duo Big & Rich, Brooks & Dunn return to their Nashville roots on HILLBILLY DELUXE. After a string of increasingly pop-oriented albums, the change does them good. The first single, "Play Something Country," could be the best jukebox song since Alan Jackson's early-1990s hit "Don't ...

| | Carrie Underwood Some Hearts CD (2005)
Time Well Wasted album
$9.15 Country purists may take offense at finding American Idol winner Carrie Underwood's debut album in the country section. An unabashedly manufactured commercial product, SOME HEARTS is the sound of mainstream country in the 2000s heavily steeped in glossy pop. There's nothing downhome or roots-conscious about Underwood's voice or looks: she's the pretty blonde next door with a fine singing voice, but the powers that be have made her a country artist, and that's what the public gets.
None of this is to say that SOME HEARTS is not a good pop album. The combination of Underwood's considerable gift and the slick, spot-on production of Dan Huff and Mark Bright makes ...

Time Well Wasted songs
$9.25 For his first all-solo, all-instrumental, all-acoustic album, French fingerstyle guitar virtuoso Pierre Bensusan found himself signed to Favored Nations, a label owned by rock & roll stunt guitarist Steve Vai. It may not be an obvious pairing, but Vai has long been a fan of Bensusan's elegant and pancultural approach to the guitar, and with Intuite he offers Bensusan a warm, resonant ambience in which to stretch out. As you might expect, the compositions refer ...
