Terry Reid is one of rock's most curious should-have-beens. Very much a singer's singer, Reid's soul-deep wail made him a favorite of Eric Clapton, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and others (so much so with Page, that Reid was actually the guitarist's first choice to front Led Zeppelin), Reid was never able to achieve the solo success for which he believed he was destined. Nonetheless, he left behind a startlingly impressive body of work. Astralwerk's 17-track collection SUPERLUNGS (not to be confused with the considerably more comprehensive U.K. double-disc of the same name) provides an excellent introduction to this most infamous of underachievers.

The collection focuses primarily on Reid's earlier R&B-infused material, and contains his gritty readings of "Highway 61 Revisited," "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)," "Superlungs My Supergirl," as well his own songs "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace," later covered by Cheap Trick, "Rich Kid Blues," and "July," among others. Those already familiar with Reid will want something more extensive, however, as an introduction to this quietly seminal figure, SUPERLUNGS is ideal.

5 stars Wow!
If only this were a more complete collection! This guy was one of the great voices of late 60s British Rock. The story of how he turned-down the job of Led Zeppelin vocalist is legendary, but what is less known is that he made several excellent albums. The odd thing about Terry Reid is that he never seemed to get material or arrangements that were quite up to the standard of his voice. He is similar to Chris Farlowe in this regard. Even on his best albums, the arrangements often are weak. However, his voice covers all sins. This is one of those "must have" albums for a complete Rock collection.
