All songs written by Peter Hammill except "Wondering" (Banton/Hammill).

Released in the latter half of 1976 as a half-hearted attempt at some sort of commercial focus in the U.K. and U.S., World Record suffers from several ailments: there was much tension in the band at this point, particularly between leader Peter Hammill and keyboardist Hugh Banton. In the end, the band would split apart, with Banton and wind player David Jackson leaving, while Hammill and drummer Guy Evans recruited replacements. World Record is very much a divided record, sounding beautifully clean, but lacking in both performance and focus. Evans plays as well as ever, but without the creative spark of earlier records; Hammill, meanwhile, was responsible for the rambling, scattered "Meurglys III (The Songwriter's Guild)," a lumbering piece named after one of his guitars. Of the cuts present, the best are the operatic "Masks," which mines one of Hammill's favorite themes, that of identity, and "Wondering," written in collaboration with Banton. "Wondering" is beautifully hymn-like until the very end, when it suddenly becomes querulous and uncertain, ending the album both with a note of hope and a desperate question. ~ Steven McDonald

This is a strong debut for Penny Ikinger. The songwriting is solid, with a personal voice already peeking its head through the guitar textures. The singer/guitarist has a knack for catchy melodies. Their immediate charm, almost pop at times, is counterbalanced by her sleazy guitar playing -- Françoise Hardy backed by Makoto Kawabata, perhaps? No, that may be going a little bit too far, but there is something of Hardy and Marianne Faithfull in Ikinger's voice and delivery. And there's something resolutely psychedelic in her band arrangements. Overdriven double bass and triple-layer fuzz guitars form an engaging background. It's a wonder the singer manages to remain on top most of the time. The album starts very nicely with "Poison Berries," a tight song with alternative radio appeal. And it doesn't reveal everything right from the start; it has a certain refrained attitude, as if Ikinger was waiting for the listener to get comfortable before cranking the amps and letting it loose. The same applies to "Kathleen," a nice song but somewhat too gentle (a video for it, directed by Rachel Lucas, is included on this enhanced CD). Listeners reach cruising speed with "Electra" and "Shipwrecked." "Maid of Orleans" explores different textures, including a string quartet and an antique waltz rhythm. In the last third of the album Ikinger tries a softer approach, playing charm over power. It works well and you may find that the closing "Gladly Slip Away" is very reminiscent of Concrete Blonde -- a comparison that should be considered a compliment. ~ François Couture Penny Ikinger presents her debut album Electra. Electra is an audacious production. Penny Ikinger mixes ...

In late 1965, record producer Tom Wilson, who had been behind the board when Bob Dylan went electric on songs such as "Like a Rolling Stone," moved from Columbia Records to the Verve division of MGM, where he looked for new acts. In Los Angeles, he saw a band called the Mothers at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go performing a song called "Trouble Every Day," a wordy folk-rock tune in the style of "Like a Rolling Stone" that the group's leader, Frank Zappa, had written in the wake of the recent race riot in the Watts ghetto of L.A. Wilson signed the Mothers for an advance of $2,500. When the band assembled to record its debut album at T.T.G. Studios the following March, he found that he had a lot more on his hands than just another Dylan imitator. In fact, the Mothers (who were forced to change their name to the Mothers of Invention by the record company) were a combination of a doo wop group with Mexican antecedents and a rock & roll band, with a leader whose appreciation for contemporary classical music included the percussion experimentalist Edgard Varèse as a major influence. Not only was Wilson unfazed, he helped persuade the record company to let the band make a double-LP for its debut recording. That is some of the story of Freak Out! told in The MOFO Project/Object, aka "The Making of Freak Out! An FZ Audio Documentary", which is in effect a deluxe edition reissue of the album. Maybe "super deluxe" would be a better way to put it. The four-CD set quadruples the running time of the original album, which lasted about an hour. Producers Gail Zappa (Zappa's widow) and Joe Travers have gone into the vaults and come out with the usual goods: alternate takes, unreleased tracks, remixes, live performances, and interviews in which Zappa discusses Freak Out! One of the most valuable aspects of the package is that it brings ...
