$12.89 The sisters Casady set the weirdness bar awfully high on their homemade debut, LA MAISON DE MON REVE, but this inspired follow-up finds the bar ascended as the angels take it on the road, recording everywhere from barnyards to actual music studios. As usual, classically trained vocalist Sierra delivers the delirious operatic vocalizing and plays piano, dulcimer, and autoharp while Bianca coos like a 12-year old vampire Billie Holiday and makes percussive noise from computers and shakers with equal abandon.
The difference here is in the confidence, the polish, and the guest stars: Antony (of Antony & the Johnsons) singing and playing piano on the movingly transgressive "Beautiful Boyz," Devendra Banhart sampled from what sounds like an old scratchy 78 (actually a phoned-in vocal) on "Brazilian Sun," and French rapper Spleen laying it down on the intro of "Bisounours." There are also horses and cats ("Bear Hides & Buffalo"), and off-kilter ...
| | Dresden Dolls Yes, Virginia CD (2006) Digipak
Symbol
$12.99 On their second album, YES, VIRGINIA, gothic-cabaret duo the Dresden Dolls move further toward a more accessible pop middle ground, but still retain touches of their manic, punkish roots. It's a deliciously bitter pill to swallow, like the theme to the TV show "Dawson's Creek" spiked with Drano. Keyboardist and vocalist Amanda Palmer croons in a molasses-rich alto, enunciating each word with the determination of Billy Joel on speed and ...
| | Black Heart Procession Spell CD (2006) Digipak
Symbol
$12.95 THE SPELL, the seventh release from San Diego's the Black Heart Procession, combines the band's early minimalist tendencies with the rock richness of 2002's AMORE DEL TROPICO. The Procession still wade in dark, melancholic waters, offering up Gothic Americana soundscapes of bleak introspection, but on the aptly named THE SPELL they add inspired songcraft, rock guitars, and pointed lyrical themes--political ...
| | Beirut Gulag Orkestar CD (2006)
Symbol
$10.79 The debut of singer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon (aka Beirut), 2006's GULAG ORKESTAR marks the arrival of a precocious talent. It's a lushly arranged album that reveals Condon's unabashed adoration of Eastern European folk music, gilded with swaying accordion lines, rapturous string passages, and jangling percussion that seem wholly rooted in traditional Slavic music (see the waltz-like "Prenzlauerberg")--making its creation by a young Europhile from New Mexico that much more impressive.
While there's little in the way of pop/rock influence in Beirut's instrumental approach, Condon sings in a low warble that recalls the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt, showcasing his unrestrained flair for drama ...
| | Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning CD (2000) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Canada
Symbol
$25.59 The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your Energy," to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon ("Better Man"). Best of all, however, is "Rock D.J.," a Cockney-rap track which sounds like modern day Ian Dury until it closes with a lift of the vocal breakdown from Sly Stone's "Dance To the Music." All in all, SING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING is an ambitious and highly entertaining piece of work.
Canadian version of the former Take That vocalist and UK superstar's third album. Includes two bonus tracks, 'Supreme' (sung in French) and 'Better Man' (sung in Spanish) along with the English language versions and the first two singles, 'Rock DJ' and 'Kids' (feat. Kylie Minogue). 2000 release. Standard jewelcase.
Canadian edition adds two songs.
CD contains 2 bonus tracks.
Personnel includes: Robbie Williams (vocals); Alana Duncan (spoken vocals); Neil Taylor (electric guitar); Guy Chambers (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer): Phil Palmer (12-string guitar); Steve Sidwell ...

$12.35 One of Beach Boy associate Gary Usher's many surf- and hotrod-centric 1960s bands--all of which consisted of the same circle of L.A. session players--the Kickstands' slant on the genre was, as their name implies, aimed at motorcycle aficionados. Titles like "Devil on Wheels," "Johnny Take Care," and "Haulin' Honda" are clues to the high-octane rock & roll content, while soon-to-be music ...

One year and a half later, their first demo was released under the title "Harvests Of Disorder".
