| | Susumu Yokota Symbol CD Susumu Yokota Discography of CDs
Possibly the most unique item within Susumu Yokota's highly idiosyncratic oeuvre, Symbol finds the multifaceted Japanese electronica master defying and muddying genre distinctions to create sui generis compositions of considerable beauty and strangeness. That's not exactly new territory for Yokota, but this time there's a gimmick: the album is consists primarily of fragments taken from classical pieces, many of them highly familiar, if not always readily identifiable, by the likes of Debussy, Rachmaninov, and Beethoven -- with a particular reliance on Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker" and Saint-Saëns' "Carnival of the Animals" -- as well as bits of more recent works by John Cage and Meredith Monk, whose unearthly voice becomes a focal point for several of these tracks. But while Yokota cuts, pastes, and plunders the world of art music with a palpable exuberance akin to the mash-up artists, his contemporaries, who were doing similar things with pop, the results are more nuanced than merely novel. Nor is it entirely out of step with his previous work -- it's not as serenely ambient as the beloved Sakura (though it is generally quite soothing), and it certainly has little to do with his various dance-oriented releases, but it retains the meticulous, multilayered compositional approach of albums like Grinning Cat and The Boy & the Tree. And although the presence of electronics is kept relatively understated, the elements with which Yokota weaves together his mad grab-bag of orchestral motifs, frolicsome fragments of flute and piano, and stately string passages (there are sometimes as many as seven classical samples in a single four-minute piece) will be immediately familiar to his listeners: subtly burbling beats, wordless ethereal vocals, vaguely Asian-sounding percussion loops (as well as a marimba ostinato that could pass for a Steve Reich sample). Indeed, without the obviously recognizable nature of his sample sources (which, depending on your perspective, could be a source of distraction or a point of engagement), it would be difficult to distinguish many of these pieces from "standard" Yokota compositions -- a feat which is in itself quite an accomplishment. That it's also a fascinating and rewarding listen, and an undeniably gorgeous bit of craftsmanship, arguably elevates Symbol to near the level of its inspirations, or at least positions it as a curious bridge between too-often estranged musical worlds. ~ K. Symbol album
$11.45 The debut of singer/multi-instrumentalist Zach Condon (aka Beirut), 2006's GULAG ORKESTAR marks the arrival of a precocious talent. It's a lushly arranged album that reveals Condon's unabashed adoration of Eastern European folk music, gilded with swaying accordion lines, rapturous string passages, and jangling percussion that seem wholly rooted in traditional Slavic music (see the waltz-like "Prenzlauerberg")--making its creation by a young Europhile from ...

| | Susumu Yokota Wonder Waltz CD (2006)
Symbol music CDs
$12.95 As the title suggests, each of the selections on Wonder Waltz is in triple meter, which is fairly unusual for electronica, if nothing necessarily remarkable in itself. (It would be a stretch to call most of them "waltzes," since some are clearly felt in six and others are either extremely loose or convoluted, rhythmically speaking -- the obvious exception being "Merrygoround," a circus-like early Yokota composition that's reprised here from Image: 1983-1998.) But it will have to suffice as a unifying concept, since apart from the presence of (mostly female) vocals on all but a couple of them, it's just about the only thing these 14 tracks have in common. This is almost certainly Yokota's most varied album to date, gesturing at a dozen or more styles (trip-hop, electro, tango, gamelan, Indian classical music, breakbeat IDM, folk, and beyond) while remaining essentially undefined and abstract. In that sense it both reflects and transcends most of what the hyperprolific Japanese producer has accomplished to date, recalling everything from his straight-ahead house and techno material (the three-on-the-floor thud of "Siva Dance") to his majestic ambient work (the voiceless closer "Holy Ground," a minimal meditation on Yokota's beloved bell sounds.) The album understandably ...

| | ! Myth Takes CD (2007)
Symbol album
$12.65 With 2007's MYTH TAKES, the Brooklyn-based dance-punk octet !!! (aka Chk Chk Chk) presents an outing that's notably more accessible and immediately engaging that its predecessors. Not only have frontman Nic Offer and company reined in the excessive swearing (see the expletive-laden LOUDEN UP NOW), they have imbued their brand of robot rock with added elasticity and energy, as best revealed on the fast-paced opening title track, which coasts along on a twangy surf/spaghetti Western vibe, and the pulsing, club-ready "Heart of Hearts."
However, those worried that the ensemble has dulled its mischievous edge will be reassured by the searing, frenetic "All My Heroes Are Weirdos" and the atmospheric, groove-steeped "Bend Over Beethoven," two tunes that prove that !!!'s blatantly quirky and experimental side has been toned down, but not forgotten. For those intrigued by !!!, but put off by the band's uber-hipster archness, MYTH TAKES may be the point where they join in the party.

| | Autechre Quaristice CD (2008)
Symbol CD music
$12.65 Among detractors, electronic music is often criticized for wanting some undefined quality, most often related to some perception of a lack of "warmth" or "soul." The music of U.K. electronic pioneers Autechre makes no such easy concessions to what might be considered pedestrian concerns. Since the early 90s, Sean Booth and Rob Brown have been generating a parallel universe of sound--a sound that has pushed at the boundaries of musical abstraction by exploring the multiplicities and infinite variations offered by technology.
On their ninth album, QUARISTICE, Autechre's technology-driven imperative is as uncompromising as ever. But rather than construct a maze of refracted, endlessly variegated sound, they choose to break up the set into shorter ...

Symbol music CDs
$16.65 The former Take That heartthrob's follow-up to THE EGO HAS LANDED is so slick and covers so many stylistic bases that one's initial response is that it's too clever by half. On more careful listening, however, it seems more the work of a true pop obsessive, a guy with an encyclopedic enthusiasm for all sorts of music.
The lyrics here are literate, funny, and loaded with attitude (in the good sense); you have to love a guy who can reference John Coltrane, AC/DC, and the Manic Street Preachers on the same album. The music is similarly smart, ranging from high quality dance pop of the boy band variety ("Kids," a duet with Britney Spears' role model Kylie Minogue), to the alt-rock Oasis-meets-Led Zeppelin guitar grind of "Let Love Be Your Energy," to songs that sound uncannily like IMAGINE-era John Lennon ("Better Man"). Best of all, however, ...
