Gypsy Wheel / Robertello, Choi
$9.75 Feisty re-imaginings of beloved songs from the pop, folk, and classical canon make violinist David Garrett's self-titled album an unpredictable and joyous listen. Garrett--a former student of Itzhak Perlman--has remarkable control over his tone, guiding his violin to sound tremblingly sweet ("Nothing Else Matters"), bluesy and soulful ("Ain't No Sunshine"), jaunty ("Zorba's Dance"), and even aggressive and artfully harsh ("Thunderstruck"), a versatility that allows him to cover Metallica and traditional Hungarian folk dances with equal aplomb.
Audio Remasterer: Tom Coyne.

| | Gods & Generals Gods And Generals CD (2003) Limited Edition
Gypsy Wheel / Robertello, Choi
$15.05 The Soundtrack for director Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War film GODS AND GENERALS consists of a score by John Frizell and Randy Edelman, book-ended by original songs from ex-October Project vocalist Mary Fahl and folk/rock icon Bob Dylan. The former track, "Going Home" is a haunting, Celtic-influenced piece that sounds similar to the best work of June Tabor and Maddy Prior. Dylan's contribution is a typically insightful and poignant look at a difficult topic, and lends the proceedings a quiet grandeur. Musically, "'Cross The Green Mountain" recalls his early-'70s work with Leon Russell. Frizell and Edelman's score is appropriately melancholy and sweeping, perfectly reflecting the epic proportions and painful subject matter of the film. The best tracks pair the symphony orchestra with country fiddler extraordinaire Mark O'Connor and Chieftan's frontman Paddy Mahoney, who impart an air of 19th-century authenticity.
Includes a bonus limited edition DVD.
Original score composed by John Frizell and Randy Edelman.
Includes liner notes by Ronald F. Maxwell.

| | Elgar: Violin Concerto, Enigma Variations / Elgar, Et Al CD (1999)
Gypsy Wheel / Robertello, Choi
$9.49 One of the great developments of the 20th century is our ability to preserve music in performance as well as transcription. The performing artists will be remembered by more than name--their recordings will play on for centuries to come.
This recording represents a rare opportunity to hear one of the century's great violinists in his youth, conducted by a great composer at the end of his career. Two years before his death, Sir Edward Elgar met a 16-year-old Yehudi Menuhin, and the two became fast friends. Menuhin, who was already enthusiastic about Elgar's violin concertos and 'Enigma' Variations, was enlisted to record with the London Symphony and Royal Albert Hall orchestras.
The synergy between conductor and soloist is palpable in these remastered recordings. In addition to their superb technique and understanding of the works, the two understood each other deeply. "You see, Yehudi," Elgar wrote over the violin's entry on the score, "I thought of you 10 years before you were born."
Performances such as these make for legend in music history texts. Thanks to technology, they can be preserved and enjoyed today and forever.
