This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH. Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, ...
| | Francoise Hardy Best Of CD (2000) Import
Buoni O Cattivi
$12.79 18 track collection of Hardy's years recording for the Vogue label.
Personnel: Françoise Hardy (vocals). As single-disc Françoise Hardy compilations go, this is one of the worst options, for several reasons. Though at a glance its scope might appear wide -- the 18 tracks dating from as early as 1962 and as late as 1989 -- in fact, its range is relatively small, with 11 of the songs dating from 1962-1966, the other seven from 1981-1989, and nothing at all falling outside of those years. If you're going to have a Hardy compilation, better that it focus on one specific decade or narrow year range, since her music in the 1960s was quite different in style (and quality) from her 1980s output. And, most importantly, the 1980s tracks here are far worse than her fine 1960s work (or, for that matter, her 1970s or 1990s work), as in that decade she was just another Europop singer, with anonymous material that wasn't even sung nearly as well as most of her other releases. True, the 1962-1966 cuts do include good-to-great vintage tracks, among them some of her greatest songs, such as "Le Temps de L'Amour," "Le Premier Bonheur du Jour," "Pourtant Tu M'Aimes," ...
| | Tommy Bolin Teaser CD (1975) Japan
Buoni O Cattivi
$22.09 This 1975 first outing by the late rock-guitar virtuoso Tommy Bolin includes "Homeward Strut," "Marching Power" and "Lotus." After performing in a variety of bands since the late '60s, Bolin finally released his first solo album in 1975. Teaser is an impressive display of the guitarist's prowess and range, and is a natural progression from the previous Bolin-dominated James Gang albums Bang and Miami and his work with drummer Billy Cobham. The album features heavy doses of jazz-rock fusion (furthered by guests Jan Hammer, Dave Sanborn, and Michael Walden) in the instrumentals "Homeward Strut" and "Marching Powder," and straight-ahead rock in tracks like "The Grind." Bolin was always equally adept at subtleties, and the ballad "Dreamer" and the exotic "Savannah Woman" (with percussion from Phil ...
