Thunder Across the Plainz songs. Includes liner notes by David Byrne, Larry Crook & Charles A. Perrone.
Digitally remastered by Jack Skinner (K-Disc, Los Angeles, California).
When David Byrne first visited the Salvador/Bahia region in 1986, a new musical form that he never heard before amazed him. Dubbed forro, this dance sound originally hailed from northeastern Brazil, described as "a mixture of ska with polka" by Byrne himself. All of the album's tracks radiate a strong, positive energy, created in the most part by reggae-ish acoustic guitars, melodic accordions, and never-ending contagious rhythms. And although this musical style could be compared to America's zydeco sound, forro is intended mainly for parties. Brazil Classics, Vol. 3 was compiled by Byrne himself and features the very best artists and compositions that the genre has to offer. Highlights include Luiz Gonzaga's excellent opener, "O Fole Roncou" (bordering on funk), Dominguinhos' laid-back "Querubim," and the hyper-energetic "Festa do Interior" by Gal Costa. A superb introduction to the exotic style of forro, and highly recommended. ~ Greg Prato

Thunder Across the Plainz music CDs. The Brand NEW album from Chely featuring the hit song "Bumper of My S.U.V."
"It's the Song," the lead-off track from THE METROPOLITAN HOTEL, could very well have served as the album's title, as the record marks not only a return to form for Chely Wright, but a renewed desire to give thoughtful writing priority over slick production and radio-friendly novelty. Filled with sharp lyrical detail and backed by a more relaxed, stripped-down version of Wright's usual pop-fueled sound, many of the songs here are drawn from Wright's personal experiences. "Between a Mother and a Child" uses drum loops as a basis upon which to build a stark examination of the complex familial relationships emerging from a messy divorce. The gentle, mandolin-driven ballad "The Bumper of My S.U.V." is a softer version of Toby Keith-style patriotism, and pulls the neat trick of being simultaneously biting and wistfully melancholy. An album that's at once expertly crafted and deeply personal, THE METROPOLITAN HOTEL ranks among Chely Wright's most accomplished work.
Personnel: Chely Wright (vocals); Tom Bukovac (guitar); Scotty Sanders (steel guitar); Gordon Mote (keyboards); Mark Hill (bass instrument); Steve Brewster (drums); Vince Gill, Emily West (background vocals).
