| | Stan Kenton Stage Door Swings CD (1958)
Blues Is Everybody's album
$9.65 THE STAGE DOOR SWINGS showcases Stan Kenton using the range and power of his big band to interpret 12 Broadway hits. Listeners might assume that a "Broadway Hits" set would find Kenton scaling back his usual progressive tendencies, but that is not the case. The arrangements by Lennie Niehaus are ambitious and at times grandiose, utilizing the full force of the 18-piece group.
The set includes such familiar gems as Cole Porter's "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Bali Ha'i," and Adler and Ross's "Whatever Lola Wants." There are several fine soloists, including Neihaus himself on alto sax on "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads" and "Hey There." As usual, Kenton manages music that is harmonically advanced yet also highly melodic and swinging, making this a fine set for fans of Broadway musicals, big-band swing, and challenging large-ensemble arrangements.

| | Antonio Carlos Jobim & Friends CD (1996)
Blues Is Everybody's CD music
$13.05 Recorded live at the Free Jazz Festival, Sao Paulo, Brazil on September 27, 1993. Includes liner notes by Richard S. Ginell.
Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba's performance on "Agua De Beber" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.
Recorded at the Sao Paulo Free Jazz Festival in Brazil on September 27, 1993, barely a year before Antonio Carlos Jobim's death, ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM/FRIENDS is an all-star tribute to the father of bossa nova, the blend of traditional Brazilian samba and American cool jazz that was all the rage in the mid-'60s. Featuring a wealth of stars, including pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, percussionist Alex Acuna and singers Gal Costa and Jon Hendricks--not to mention Jobim's son Paulo on guitar--the 13-track set is sharper and seemingly better rehearsed than most such one-off performances. The overture-style "Prelude Melody" opens the proceedings with a trio of Jobim's best and most complex melodies, played flawlessly by the assembled ...

Blues Is Everybody's Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) ARRANGER'S MASTERPIECE FINALLY ARRIVES This album is from the "golden age" of 50's recordings, when composers and arrangers could create a soundscape on lp, using the cream of New York musicians. One look at the listing of players should be enough. Put this on the shelf along side Bill Pott's "Porgy and Bess", Brookmyer's "Stormy Monday", Al Cohn's projects, and a few others. I have waited for this on cd for a long time and am thrilled it is finally here. The bonus big band tracks, also arranged by Albam, are a treat,as well. One of Manny's Best Even though the 4 parts of "The Blues Is Everybody's Business" are fairly lengthy, they are never boring. This is without doubt some of Manny Albam's finest writing for a Big Band.
Featuring an All-Star NYC Band with all the usual suspects from 1957, including a magnificent string section on Part 2 & 3. This was Jazz in the 50's at it's best.
Not to be overlooked are the 9 bonus tracks that feature another Big Band from NYC in the mid-50's conducted by trumpeter Larry Sonn. This new label Gambit is not a cheapo, excellent graphics, a nice booklet, and good sound quality. Submitted by augerman (Brantford, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
