Along with Gil Evans, Lennie Niehaus, and George Russell, Manny Albam is considered to be one of the more important large ensemble jazz arrangers of the late-50s and early-60s. He made very few albums under his own name, which makes this 1957 outing all that more vital. The 19-piece band features the likes of Phil Woods, Al Cohn, and Milt Hinton.
The legendary album Blues Is Everybody's Business is widely regarded as the definitive work of one of the finest modern jazz arrangers of all time, the great Manny Albam. Recorded in September & October, 1957 the album features an all-star 19-piece band performing Albam's masterful charts. This edition also includes 7 bonus tracks all of which are featured here for the first time ever on CD. The first 5 tracks pertain to all of Albam's charts recorded on Larry Sonn's LP 'The Sound Of Sonn' recorded between 1955 and 1956 and featuring another all-star 19-piece band. The final 2 tracks are live versions of Albam's charts 'Zanzy' and 'Ida Bridges Falling Down', recorded by Larry Sonn's big band in a concert produced and emceed by All Jazzbo Collins. Gambi. 2005.

| Blues Is Everybody's Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) ARRANGER'S MASTERPIECE FINALLY ARRIVES This album is from the "golden age" of 50's recordings, when composers and arrangers could create a soundscape on lp, using the cream of New York musicians. One look at the listing of players should be enough. Put this on the shelf along side Bill Pott's "Porgy and Bess", Brookmyer's "Stormy Monday", Al Cohn's projects, and a few others. I have waited for this on cd for a long time and am thrilled it is finally here. The bonus big band tracks, also arranged by Albam, are a treat,as well. One of Manny's Best Even though the 4 parts of "The Blues Is Everybody's Business" are fairly lengthy, they are never boring. This is without doubt some of Manny Albam's finest writing for a Big Band.
Featuring an All-Star NYC Band with all the usual suspects from 1957, including a magnificent string section on Part 2 & 3. This was Jazz in the 50's at it's best.
Not to be overlooked are the 9 bonus tracks that feature another Big Band from NYC in the mid-50's conducted by trumpeter Larry Sonn. This new label Gambit is not a cheapo, excellent graphics, a nice booklet, and good sound quality. Submitted by augerman (Brantford, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Gene Krupa Plays Gerry Mulligan Arrangements CD (1959) Limited Edition; Remastered
Blues Is Everybody's
$9.89 Plays Gerry Mulligan Arrangements is an unusual Gene Krupa album from 1958 that was reissued in 2005. Rather than hearing Krupa play his usual swing hits, this is essentially a revisit to his underrated 1946-1949 boppish big band. Mulligan revived some of his arrangements from the period ("Disc Jockey Jump" is the most famous chart) and added a few others in the same style. Krupa has a few drum breaks along the way but otherwise is nearly invisible, as this is more of a Mulligan than a Krupa set. The exact soloists are not identified, but trumpeter Doc Severinsen, trombonist Urbie Green, and altoist Phil Woods are among the many who are heard from. The music is cool-toned, lightly swinging, tasteful, and enjoyable. It is a pity, though, that Mulligan did not bring his baritone along and join in too. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Blues Is Everybody's
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the ...
| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
Blues Is Everybody's
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises ...

| | Louie Bellson Inferno!: 150 Mph/Dynamite CDs (2002)
Blues Is Everybody's
$15.39 INFERNO! contains 2 original LPs on 2 CDs: 150 MPH (1979)/DYNAMITE! (1980).
Although the two albums combined on this reissue were recorded five years apart (150 MPH, though not released until 1979, was cut in sessions on May 25 and July 29, 1974, while Dynamite was recorded live at the Concord Jazz Festival in August 1979 and first issued in 1980), they have a lot in common. Both are big band dates, and some of the same personnel appear on both: trumpeter Bobby Shew; trombonists Nick DiMaio (the co-producer of 150 MPH), Dana Hughes, and Bob Payne; saxophonists Dick Spencer and Don Menza (who wrote six selections, four on 150 MPH and two on Dynamite); and percussionist/vibes player Jack Arnold. Beyond that, the musical approach is much the same on both albums. Drummer/leader Louie Bellson filled both with originals, most of them written either by himself or Menza, although there is a cover of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Hello Young Lovers" from The King and I on 150 MPH and then-teenaged saxophonist Matt Catingub contributed the closing track, "Explosion," to Dynamite. Bellson and Menza's tunes are busy swing numbers with plenty of room for soloing by the horn players, particularly Shew and (on 150 MPH) tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb. Of course, the leader gets his say, too, particularly on the barnburners ...
| | Klaus Schulze Miditerranean Pads CD (1990)
Blues Is Everybody's
$13.85 If you're afraid of commitment, Miditerranean Pads might not be for you. To get the music's full effect, it is recommended that you turn off the lights, fire up a big candle (a lava lamp'll do in a pinch), and let Klaus Schulze's kaleidoscopic arrangements weave their magic. But -- and here's where the commitment part comes in -- the disc runs just over 70 minutes, which might tax the limits of the novice navel-gazer. Fortunately, the music commands attention, consuming the senses immediately rather than slowly adding ...
