The phenomenon of legendary older musicians working with younger contemporary artists to broaden artistic and commercial possibilities had almost become its own genre by the mid-2000s. Sergio Mendes's 2006 release TIMELESS keeps that trend alive and kicking. In a full-scale collaboration with Black Eyed Peas, Mendes updates the Brazilian pop he mastered in the 1960s by infusing it with R&B and hip-hop.
The synthesis should come as no surprise. Amid the reggaeton craze of the 2000s, who better to lay down Latin-flavored tracks for MCs than Mr. Brazil 66 himself? But the real clincher here is the roster of guest stars which includes Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, the Roots, and the aforementioned Black Eyed Peas, among many others. The odd, yet surprisingly successful combos (Timberlake and underground MC Pharoahe Monch anyone?) mix Mendes's bossa nova and samba with equal doses mainstream pop, funky soul, and hard-edged rap, revealing the polymorphous possibilities in the master's sound, and creating an album that is certainly timely, if not timeless.Rolling Stone (p.68) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he album relaxes halfway through with lush, newly written ballads....When TIMELESS succeeds, it's beautiful, boundary-breaking music." Entertainment Weekly (p.64) - "[This] set of gentle samba-jazz-rap is a pleasant surprise..." -- Grade: B JazzTimes (p.78) - "[I]t is Mendes who is the album's backbone -- his piano work forming the solid centerline that assuredly, passionately defines every joyous bump, crevice and curve." Sergio Mendes Timeless Songs Timeless Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews It's Hott!!! First off I'm not a lover of rap but the collabos on this cd are hott!! I can't take this cd out of my laptop at work. It makes my very long day much easier and more fun. Love all the tracks with the acception of John Legend's. I'm just not feeling this young singer at all but other than that this cd is a must have. I can't get enough of it!! I love to sing along even though I don't know the Portuguese I say it phonetically. Submitted by dmbthelakes (New Orleans, LA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Confused ? I HATE, ABSOLUTELY HATE, Rap music ! So after my first play of TIMELESS I was totally confused and felt I had poured dollars down the drain. Persistance is everything, and after a couple more plays my confusion lessened and I started to appreciate that SM and guests had put together something rather inspired and unique. The meeting of Brazilian and Rap music did not sound particularly compatable. But, of course, I was wrong...again !
Final thought...I like it. Money well spent. Submitted by keninbigto (Toronto, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Mas Que Nada w/ black eyed peas -Excellant I've seen Sergio live over the past 35 years and always really enjoyed his show in fact I just seen him at the blue note recently-excellant!. This Cd was a disappointment for me. I was expecting more well knonw songs. Except for Mas Que Nada w/ black eyed peas (which is worth the price of the cd alone & should become a hit because it uses the pretty much the same music as Hey Mama. I'm a mobile DJ & I used it this weekend at a wedding & they loved it. I think they just picked the wrong songs to use for this project. They could of done better. $10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. | | Herb Alpert Lost Treasures CD (2005) Remastered; Special Edition
Timeless songs
$12.09 LOST TREASURES is a collection of rare and previously unreleased tracks.
Early in 2005, Shout! Factory launched an extensive reissue campaign of Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass' '60s catalog. In the first wave of reissues, Alpert's classic 1962 debut, The Lonely Bull, and his third album, 1964's South of the Border, were given upgrades and they were joined by a new compilation of rarities called Lost Treasures. Compiled in large part by Alpert himself, Lost Treasures features a generous selection of 22 tracks, recorded somewhere between 1962 and 1972. It's difficult to discern the exact dates since the otherwise excellent liner notes by Josh Kun (with an introduction by Alpert) do not mention when any of the individual songs were recorded or if they've appeared on other albums (Alpert alludes to the fact that some of the cuts here were album tracks on otherwise "unsuccessful" LPs from the early '70s), nor do they mention recording personnel. This is a bit infuriating for any fan or ...
| | Herb Alpert South Of The Border CD (1964) Remastered; Special Edition
Timeless album
$10.49 Herb Alpert/Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass/Tijuana Brass: Herb Alpert (trumpet); John Pisano (electric guitar); Tonni Kalash (trumpet); Bob Edmondson (trombone); Lou Pagani (piano); Pat Senatore (bass guitar); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Herb Alpert was still using an array of SoCal studio all-stars as his Tijuana Brass when South of the Border (1964) began to restore the combo's good name after the modest Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, Vol. 2 (1963) failed to ignite a fire in listener's ears. In his essay accompanying Shout! Factory's 2005 Signature Series reissue of South of the Border, Alpert comments that the Sol Lake composition "Mexican Shuffle" "opened a new door for me." That passageway meant the loss of the Tijuana Brass' practically forced mariachi style and the rise of Alpert's approach in arranging familiar melodies ...
