After years of battling his label, Curb Records, Hank Williams III finally saw the release of STRAIGHT TO HELL in 2006. The album is a set of unapologetic outlaw-country tunes that evokes the spirit of Williams's legendary grandfather (whom he resembles in both voice and appearance), while also nodding to other rebellious greats such as David Allan Coe, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings, most blatantly on the woozy, booze-soaked "Country Heroes." Lyrically, Hank III is still concerned with drinking, smoking, and other sinful pastimes, as best revealed on "Crazed Country Rebel," which serves nicely as the rambunctious artist's motto. However, the self-professed "hellbilly" resists the heavy-metal influence that informs much of his persona (and comes to the forefront with the side-project Assjack) and, instead, plays it affectionately and knowingly straight, as if making sure not to sully the good family name.Rolling Stone (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Low Down' reminds non-fans he can write a sad song worthy of his granddad..." Uncut (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he grandson of Hank Williams rides a dual track from sublime to perverse." No Depression (p.131) - "[R]iven, driven and demon'd with sin....He's deeper and darker and bigger and better than he's every likely to be allowed." Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Most of this superb record is laugh-out-loud funny, but the intent is deadly serious....He is a country-punk Eminem, ready to take the trash talk global." Straight To Hell Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews KICKS ASS!! Great to finally hear some real country music, even if it is from a metal maniac. I get the feeling that if 'ol Hank Sr. himself was born in this generation he would be walking a similiar path as his grandson. Check III out if he ever comes near your town. Hank, JoeBuck and the rest of the Damn Band rule!!! Submitted by WildScotsman (Wayne County, WV, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
awesome 3rd album with songs like (pills i took) and (lowdown) Shelton Hank Williams pulled out his own country music with the likes of Waylon, Coe, and Jones as his influences. Hank III could head the next Rowdy/Outlaw revolution and help seperate country and pop. Submitted by wright (alexander city, alabama usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hank 111 Alot like granddad An exellent album with alot of wonderful instrumental work, especially the guitar. His voice at times, truly does remind you a great deal of Hank SR. The profanity is a bit much, and the drinking a little heavy. but, he will grow out of that soon. The family talent is definitely alive with Hank 111. Submitted by mholder (rifle, CO. Straight To Hell album
$6.05 Principally recorded at Curb Studios and Woodland Studios, Nashville, Tennessee.
It's often been said that if Hank Williams himself came back to life today, he couldn't get played on mainstream country radio. With his raw, unabashedly twangy voice and simplistic arrangements, he'd be considered "too country" for a generation raised on Garth and Shania. RISIN' OUTLAW, by Hank Williams' grandson, Shelton Hank Williams (or Hank III, as he bills himself), provides a pretty good test of this theory. Not only is Hank III the spitting image of his late grandaddy, he sings just like him too--and on tracks like "You're the Reason" and "On My Own," the resemblance is downright eerie.
But Hank III's also got more than a streak of his dad, Hank Jr. in him--the CD isn't called RISIN' OUTLAW for nothing. He alludes to his propensity for bad behavior in "I Don't Know," and sings openly about snorting cocaine on "Cocaine Blues." Give young Williams credit--having ...

$6.49 Rather than hide from his musical legacy, the grandson of Hank Williams spends most of his second album wholeheartedly embracing grandpa's formidable work. | | Van Morrison Pay The Devil CD (2006)
Straight To Hell album
$11.49 Over the course of his remarkable career, Van Morrison has ranged so widely across the musical map that it's not exactly a surprise to hear him settling down for a straightforward American roots effort. PAY THE DEVIL, released in 2006 on the Lost Highway label, finds Morrison abandoning any remaining mystical Celtic trappings to tip his hat to the country music of the 1940s and '50s. The arrangements are appropriately spare, with fiddle, steel and acoustic guitar, bass, and drums propping up most of the songs, while strings and backing vocals flesh things out on occasion.
There are three Morrison originals and a ...
