Recorded in 1978 at Tokyo's Live Under the Sky festival. PASSION DANCE presents McCoy Tyner in top form. On two out of five tracks, the jazz pianist is accompanied by bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, who lay down a foundation of percolating rhythms that Tyner can deftly glide across. The interplay between the three revered musicians is nothing short of stunning, particularly on the energetic opening rendition of John Coltrane's "Moment's Notice." Equally notable, though, are Tyner's solo performances, especially on the nearly 12-minute title track, which allows him to balance buoyantly melodic lines with complex improvised passages. This remastered 2005 release marks the concert album's first time on CD.

Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. Grant Green, being known mainly as a soul-jazz guitarist, eventually gravitated into the popular boogaloo sound, a derivation of Latin music. The Latin Bit is the natural bridge to that next phase, though a bit premature for most in 1961-1963, even relative to the subsequent bossa nova craze. Pianist Johnny Acea, long an underrated jazzman, is the nucleus of this session, grounding it with witty chops, chordal comping, and rhythmic meat. The Latino rhythm section of drummer Willie Bobo and conga player Carlos "Patato" Valdes personify authentic, seasoned spice, while at times the chekere sound of Garvin Masseaux makes the soup too thick. At its collective best, the group presents a steady, serene, and steamy "Besame Mucho" and the patient, slow, slinky, sultry "Tico Tico." Just a small step below is a classy take on Charlie Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes," a premier jazz bebop (emphasis) tune with a Latin undertow and Green's tiniest staccato phrases, slightly marred by the overbearing constant chekere, but still classic. "Mambo Inn" is played inaccurately, but forgivable. "Mama Inez" ranks high for its calypso-infused happy feeling and wry stop-start lines. The straight-ahead hard bopper "Brazil" and lone soul-jazz tune, "Blues for Juanita," display the single-note acumen that made Green's style instantly recognizable. Tacked on the end are two selections with pianist Sonny Clark and tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec. Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music. ~ Scott Yanow

Alto saxophonist Art Pepper succeeded in bringing his music to television audiences on three different occasions. His debut over this otherwise largely square medium was on The Steve Allen Show of January 18, 1957, with pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores. On March 31, 1957, Pepper performed on Bobby Troup's KABC Stars of Jazz Show, with pianists Larry Bunker and Victor Feldman, bassist Don Payne, and once again Chuck Flores behind the drum set. The vocalist on "Stormy Weather" was Pam Russell.
