There's more than a hint of Lucinda Williams' down-at-the-heels grittiness to Pieta Brown's determinedly greasy roots rock. And though the press materials seem designed to make you feel guilty for thinking it (she grew up without heat or indoor plumbing! In Iowa, and then in Alabama! She's for real!), there also seems to be an element of calculation at work in her sound. Take "4th of July," for example -- there's a melody in there, and you can bet she's fully capable of singing it, but she doesn't sound interested. Instead, she slips down the sides of the notes like beer foam sliding down the outside of a glass. It's not a bad effect, but it does come across as an effect; it sounds like she's slouching, and every once in a while you want to tell her to sit up straight. "In the Cool" is a completely affecting lover's plea, and "Precious Game" rocks out nicely in an understated but sturdy way, but "This Old Dress" is based on a roots-music cliché that couldn't be more tired. Again, you feel guilty pointing it out (her mama sewed that dress, for crying out loud), but still. Producer Bo Ramsey contributes his patented falling-down guitar throughout, and there are harmony vocals from Iris DeMent, which never hurts. ~ Rick Anderson
Personnel: Pieta Brown (vocals); Bo Ramsey (guitars); Kevin McKendree (keyboards); David Jacques, James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass instrument); Bryan Owings (drums).

| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
In The Cool music CDs
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
In The Cool songs
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's ...
| | Pieta Brown Remember The Sun CD (2007)
In The Cool album
$11.09 Pieta Brown paints a big picture with tiny, beautiful strokes on her deeply introspective set Remember the Sun. Like an impressionist masterpiece, whose dabs of color only take form when you step back to see the whole, so it is with this set, whose overarching themes gradually form intertwining patterns. The sullied "Innocent Blues" is a dreamy, musing number that searches in vain for peace, a clean environment, and freedom for all. But regardless of the turmoil, the world keeps spinning and we all keep "Rollin' Down the Track," doing the best we can, with Brown playing her country blues away the only way she knows how. Pulling back from the abyss of world problems, Brown falls into the chasm of her own mind, where visions and dreams slip away, and the singer seems forever grasping at things just out of reach across the rollicking R&B of "Sonic Boom." But reality keeps pulling her back, and as the claustrophobia closes in on "West Monroe," the singer, like ...
| | Eliza Gilkyson Paradise Hotel CD (2005)
In The Cool CD music
$14.65 On her last album, 2004's Land of Milk and Honey, Eliza Gilkyson, long based in Austin, TX, made some of her most explicitly political statements and, for her trouble, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Folk Album, as well, it seems, as critical email from some of her fans. (Like Natalie Maines of Dixie Chicks, Gilkyson seemed ashamed that the President of the U.S. was from Texas, and while she acknowledged the criticism on her Website, www.elizagilkyson.com and ">, she also made a point of noting that 57,288,974 Americans, at the very least -- the number of people who voted for Senator John Kerry for President in 2004 -- were on her side.) If Land of Milk and Honey was her pre-election treatise, Paradise ...
