In The Cool album
$13.95 On this debut album, Mindy Smith reveals herself as an extraordinary vocalist and songwriter who seems wise beyond her years. Her smooth, clear pipes often recall Allison Krauss, but with a more urbane bent reminiscent of Shawn Colvin or Christopher Cross. Smith's tunes showcase her voice perfectly, addressing basic themes of love, faith, regret, and hope in a gentle, mature, and thoughtful way. The first track, "Come to Jesus," pulls the rare trick of being inspiring and passionate without pushing the singer's religious convictions down the listener's throat. Throughout, the music is framed with subtle, rootsy accompaniment that lets the songs ebb and flow in a wonderfully organic manner. Full of heart and soul, ONE MOMENT MORE is a particularly auspicious introduction to an unusually talented artist.
Personnel includes: Mindy Smith (vocals); Bryan Sutton (acoustic guitar); Steve ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
In The Cool CD music
$15.89 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" the roaring, bluesy "Joy"). The debt Williams and her band owe to Neil Young & Crazy Horse is illuminated on "Are You Down," and, elsewhere, a spoken intro finds the singer laying bare her affection ...
| | John Prine Fair & Square CD (2005) Bonus Tracks
In The Cool music CDs
$13.35 FAIR & SQUARE's release was highly anticipated by John Prine fans, as the veteran singer/songwriter hadn't recorded an album of new songs in 10 years (the preceding IN SPITE OF OURSELVES was mostly cover tunes). Happily for both Prine and his contingent, FAIR & SQUARE represents that most coveted of phenomena, the Return to Form. Though 1995's LOST DOGS & MIXED BLESSINGS was not without its virtues, some tracks were marred by overproduction. Here, though, the arrangements are scaled back down to Prine's comfort zone, appropriately rootsy to accommodate both the down-home amiability of his tone and the endlessly intriguing twists and turns of his unique lyrical style. While he's not untouched by contemporary events (references to the White House and the war in Iraq crop up), most of the tunes here are the sort of classic Prine material that made the songwriter a cult hero in the '70s. Equally important, the likes of "Crazy ...

| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
In The Cool album
$10.85 Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up from Williams's demo recordings, keeping her original vocals, and creating a sound that shimmers but never loses sight of the music's tough rootsiness. Yet it's Williams's searingly honest songwriting and achingly beautiful performances that make WEST so brilliant. Whether it's gutbucket blues ("Wrap My Head Around That"), bittersweet lilt ("Learning How To Live"), or harrowing confessionals ("Unsuffer Me"), Williams knows how to scrape the bottom of the human heart and put it into song. The result is one of the finest albums in her already sterling discography.
Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears ...

In The Cool album
$7.05 Digitally remastered by Brian Lee and Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios, Inc.).
Ozzy Osbourne's world tour for 1989's NO REST FOR THE WICKED was another sold-out success for metal's beloved madman. It marked the first tour appearance of new guitarist Zakk Wylde, the second of drummer Randy Castillo, and the return of former Black Sabbath bassist Geezer Butler. As a tribute to the thousands of fans who packed arenas, Ozzy decided to re-record six fan favorites live in the studio with his new band, and issued it in early 1990 under the name JUST SAY OZZY.
Made up of four solo hits and two Black Sabbath classics, JUST SAY OZZY is an authentic representation of what the short-lived Osbourne-Butler-Wylde-Castillo line-up sounded like live. Ozzy actually stated in the press around the time of the EP's release that he much preferred the version of his 1986 hit "Shot In the Dark" included here over the original. Also included are three songs from NO REST FOR THE WICKED, "Miracle Man," "Bloodbath in Paradise," and "Tattooed Dancer," as well as the Sabbath nuggets (and all-time ...
