Josh Turner's fourth album, Haywire, has the unusual distinction of its first two singles being the first pair on an album. There's the modern-day honky tonk of "Why Don't We Just Dance?" and the faux-sensitive ballad of "I Wouldn't Be a Man." Producer Frank Rogers wanted to make a more organic-sounding record than 2007's Justin Niebank-helmed Everything Is Fine, and he accomplished that. This doesn't mean "traditional" in any sense, though. Haywire is thoroughly a contemporary country record, but is reined in with more acoustic instrumentation, less compression, and more natural-sounding vocals placed properly in the the mix. The soundtrack for Crazy Heart was produced by T Bone Burnett and contains 16 songs from the film starring Jeff Bridges. The movie is dedicated to Stephen Bruton, the legendary Texas musician, and a lifelong friend of Burnett's, wrote or co-wrote most of the original music performed by Bridges and Ryan Bingham. Bruton died from cancer shortly after finishing the project. While officially based on a book by songwriter Hank Thompson, the film took just as much of its inspiration from the life of Bruton, who lived the life that Bridges' Bad Blake did for over three decades. Musically it's the performances by Bridges that are the most arresting here. He can deliver a rollicking honky tonk song ("Somebody Else"), a lost-on-the-highway-of-life road song ( the punchy blues rocker "Fallin and Flyin'"), a love song ("Hold on You"), or a weeper (the Greg Brown-penned "Brand New Angel") with the requisite amount ...

There have been many collections of Roger Miller's hitmaking peak on Mercury over the years, but few have been as comprehensive or as good as Mercury/Chronicle's 2003 CD, All Time Greatest Hits. Spanning 20 tracks over the course of one CD, this contains all the big songs: "Dang Me," "Chug-a-Lug," "Do Wacka Do," "In the Summertime (You Don't Want My Love)," "King of the Road," "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd," "Kansas City Star," "England Swings," and "Husbands and Wives," among others. All but one track from the seminal 1965 collection Golden Hits is here ("Atta Boy Girl" is the missing culprit -- a good song but not enough to tip the scales in favor of the 38-year-old collection), and it spans further than that record, collecting hits from 1967-1970 and ending with the 1986 hit "River in the Rain." While that final song isn't quite of the standard of what preceded it, it provides a nice closer to a set of songs that unequivocally proves Miller's genius. For Penny Gilley, it’s all about the fans. Whether she’s singing in a club in Las Vegas, a packed auditorium in South Dakota, or in front of thousands of GIs in Kuwait, Penny treats her audiences like a second family. Maybe that’s part of growing up in a place like West Monroe, Louisiana, where her first audience were neighbors sitting in the pews at Southside Assembly of God. Penny, only 9, would sing, while mom, Barbara, played the piano and dad, James, played the guitar. Maybe it’s because her Dad is still her biggest fan â€" he hasn’t missed one of her shows within 250 miles in 15 years. (He comes early to get a seat rnight on the front row!) â€Ĺ"He’s a proud Daddy,” she says. For sure it’s the reason she loves old-time gospel music and country classics, because it touches hearts and speaks to people. â€Ĺ"The fans don’t get to hear the traditional music on the radio any more,” she says. â€Ĺ"People are starved for the music they grew up on and love.” That’s why she is thrilled to be moving to Branson, a family-friendly town that already feels like home. A place where you can really meet your fans up close. â€Ĺ"I remember when I was a kid, and Ernest Tubb would come through town, he’d take the time to talk to people,” she says. â€Ĺ"It really made an impression on me and I promised myself that if I ever got a chance to perform, I’d do the same thing. ” Penny has kept her promise. She’s renowned for staying late to meet fans, sign autographs or just sit and talk. Most nights, she’s the last person to leave the theater. â€Ĺ"When you give them your time, you are giving them a piece of your life, and they take it to heart,” she says. That’s why she’s got some of the most loyal fans in show business. That certainly includes daughters, Daniella, 29, and twins Jerilyn and Amanda, 24, who used to go on the road with her. More recently, the grandkids, Evan, 5, and Garrett, 3, even if they can’t join her in person. But if Penny can’t be home, she tries to create a little bit of Louisiana in the kitchen. She loves to cook up a pot of gumbo or a bowl of chicken and dumplings. And if it’s Thanksgiving, and she’s in Nashville, more than likely she’s had a tur-duck-hen flown in for the holidays. That a Louisiana specialty -- a turkey, stuffed with a chicken, stuffed with a duck, then topped off with crawfish dressing. Penny’s roots are deep in Louisiana. She started singing professionally as a teenager in West Monroe, as the only female member of a gospel group known as â€Ĺ"The Louisianans. ” Her love of country music led her to perform at Opry shows all over the South including The Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport.
