Greatest Hits album
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance flow. This doesn't turn AMERICAN RIDE into a schizophrenic jumble, as Keith has always balanced these two extremes, but after spending a little bit more time ...
| | Lorrie Morgan Moment In Time CD (2009)
Greatest Hits CD music
$10.89 Lorrie Morgan is no stranger to the limelight, demonstrating incredible talent as a vocalist -- she began her singing career in her teens at the Grand Ole Opry, was a session vocalist for years, and finally emerged as an artist and star in her own right. Since 1989 she's scored three number one singles, charted with 25 more, and has recorded nine studio albums, the latest being A MOMENT IN TIME, a 2009 gem of an album recorded for the Country Crossing imprint. There are literally dozens of records that have been recorded in the 21st century where artists cover classic country songs. Lorrie Morgan's take on the same thing is worth seeking out because it leaves the others in the dust. For starters, these 14 songs were cut in two absolutely live-to-tape studio sessions. There ...

| | Essential Willie Nelson CDs (2003) Limited Edition; Remastered
Greatest Hits album
$15.95 This CD commemorates Willie Nelson's 70th Birthday (April 30, 2003).
The catalog of Willie Nelson is so vast and rich that assembling an "essential" collection of only one or two discs seems nearly impossible. RCA's single-disc 1995 attempt was admirable and worthy, but doomed by space limitations. With a bit more room to move, Legacy's roomier two-disc collection is about close as anyone could hope to come. We get the full view of the great singer/songwriter's artistic journey.
"Hello Walls" and the evergreen "Crazy" hail from the days when Nelson was tooling around Nashville as a songwriter for hire but mystifyingly unable to connect as a solo artist. His transformation into a counterculture icon via the '70s "outlaw country" movement is marked by the likes of "Me and Paul" and "Bloody Mary ...

| | Penny Gilley Picture Of Me CD (2002)
Greatest Hits CD music
$18.95 For Penny Gilley, it’s all about the fans. Whether she’s singing in a club in Las Vegas, a packed auditorium in South Dakota, or in front of thousands of GIs in Kuwait, Penny treats her audiences like a second family. Maybe that’s part of growing up in a place like West Monroe, Louisiana, where her first audience were neighbors sitting in the pews at Southside Assembly of God. Penny, only 9, would sing, while mom, Barbara, played the piano and dad, James, played the guitar. Maybe it’s because her Dad is still her biggest fan – he hasn’t missed one of her shows within 250 miles in 15 years. (He comes early to get a seat rnight on the front row!) “He’s a proud Daddy,” she says. For sure it’s the reason she loves old-time gospel music and country classics, because it touches hearts and speaks to people. “The fans don’t get to hear the traditional music on the radio any more,” she says. “People are starved for the music they grew up on and love.” That’s why she is thrilled to be moving to Branson, a family-friendly town that already feels like home. A place where you can really meet your fans up close. “I remember when I was a kid, and Ernest Tubb would come through town, he’d take the time to talk to people,” she says. “It really made an impression on me and I promised myself that if I ever got a chance to perform, I’d do the same thing.” Penny has kept her promise. She’s renowned for staying late to meet fans, sign autographs or just sit and talk. Most nights, she’s the last person to leave the theater. “When you give them your time, you are giving them a piece of your life, and they take it to heart,” she says. That’s why she’s got some of the most loyal fans in show business. That certainly includes daughters, Daniella, 29, and twins Jerilyn and Amanda, 24, who used to go on the road with her. More recently, the grandkids, Evan, 5, and Garrett, 3, even if they can’t join her in person. But if Penny can’t be home, she tries to create a little bit of Louisiana in the kitchen. She loves to cook up a pot of gumbo or a bowl of chicken and dumplings. And if it’s Thanksgiving, and she’s in Nashville, more than likely she’s had a tur-duck-hen flown in for the holidays. That a Louisiana specialty -- a turkey, stuffed with a chicken, stuffed with a duck, then topped off with crawfish dressing. Penny’s roots are deep in Louisiana. She started singing professionally as a teenager in West Monroe, as the only female member of a gospel group known as “The Louisianans.” Her love of country music led her to perform at Opry shows all over the South including The Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport. That helped shape the kind of show she puts on today. Penny released several singles to radio, two of which went to #1 on the independent chart. Her popularity spread overseas with more #1s in Europe where her traditional sound led to performances at festivals in Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Penny has worked with many country stars including ...
