Five years after Disturbed's crushing debut, the Chicago nu-metal stalwarts offer their third full-length, TEN THOUSAND FISTS. Reunited with long-time producer Johnny K and new bassist John Moyer (Union Underground), Disturbed's return boasts a revitalized edge. TEN THOUSAND FISTS carries the metallic fire of THE SICKNESS, perfectly balanced with the melodic sensibility of 2002's BELIEVE. From the mosh pit-inspiring title track to the provocative and socially conscious lyrics of tracks such as "Deify" and "Sacred Lie," it is abundantly clear that Disturbed has further evolved their brutal-yet-refined approach. TEN THOUSAND FISTS also features striking booklet artwork by comic book legend Todd McFarlane.
Disturbed: David Draiman (vocals); Dan Donegan (guitars, keyboards); Mike Wengren (drums).
Additional personnel: John Moyer (bass guitar).

Ten Thousand Fists
$10.79 Disturbed's debut found the band crawling through the mire of contemporary metal staples for a cohesive direction. The staccato primal scream that became the band's trademark helped break the single, "Down With The Sickness," in tandem with the song's Tool-meets-Pantera rhythmic complexities. From the rap metal grooves ...
| | Disturbed Believe (not limited edition) CD (2002) Enhanced CD, NOT limited leather ed.
Ten Thousand Fists
$11.75 This Limited version of BELIEVE is packaged in a leather-bound book, accompanied by a companion bonus DVD disc.
Taking the essence of classic metal and making it contemporary is a feat that Disturbed has accomplished with staggering results. While the band's debut only toyed with melodicism (much of THE SICKNESS was derivative of the growing stable of rap metal bands), BELIEVE is Disturbed's musical arrival. Razor-sharp syncopated riffing is melded with rock radio-friendly melodic vocals, making a jaw-dropping first impression with album-opener "Prayer." The track has the requisite elements to make it an instant metal classic. Disturbed's influences peek through their music, but not in a negative sense; it's clear that Pantera, Metallica and Queensryche were among the artists this band cut their teeth on.
"Intoxication" revisits the vocal style that broke the band with "Down With The Sickness," but vocalist David Draiman puts much more effort into a vocal approach that doesn't rely on gimmicks, especially with the big chorus in "Remember" and the splayed vocal harmonies in "Believe." Making the leap into rock balladry, the album closes on an emotional note with "Darkness." With BELIEVE, Disturbed show themselves to be much more than a one-trick pony; instead they carry the torch for metal ...
| | Breaking Benjamin We Are Not Alone CD (2004)
Ten Thousand Fists
$10.45 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn.
With strong melodies reminiscent of Staind or Incubus at their most accessible, the Pennsylvania ...
| | Nickelback All The Right Reasons CD (2005)
Ten Thousand Fists
$14.79 As always, frontman Chad Kroeger's gritty voice remains Nickelback's calling card, and his emotive singing carries every tune, most notably the nostalgic "Photograph" and "Far Away," a tender, echo-laden ballad. Kroger has never met a guitar effect that he didn't like, as evidenced by the revved-up "Next Contestant," which relates the, ahem, difficulties of having a beautiful girlfriend. Though ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is slightly more eclectic than the group's past releases, ...
| | Godsmack IV CD (2006)
Ten Thousand Fists
$12.89 But while IV may not overflow with musical reinvention, it boasts the strongest batch of songs the band has written since their debut. The album's lead-off single, "Speak," is a case in point, as are the songs "Shine Down," with its bluesy intro, and the powerhouse "Temptation." Fans looking for more of the well-crafted, bone-rattling sound Godsmack offered on previous albums will be wholly ...

| | Richie Zellon Metal Caribe CD (1998)
Ten Thousand Fists
$9.79 Zellon's 1998 outing finds him taking on both familiar and unfamiliar directions in jazz performance -- applying Latin twists and jazz notions to such pieces as an excerpt from Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf," Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love," "The Twilight Zone" theme, and Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water." Much of the time, the originals are the starting point for improvisation in time signatures not originally associated with those songs, but it is enough to make the performances interesting to hear. Zellon also lets loose briefly on the title track, though his guitar and cuatro work elsewhere tends to be more restrained, with a lot of solo time being handed over to other players on the disc. An enjoyable disc with a nice sense of humor. ~ Steven McDonald
"On a program that stretches the boundaries of Latin and jazz into tantalizing new contours, Richie Zellon has entered a zone where strikingly dissimilar rhythms from throughout the Americas blend magically with unanticipated melodic detours and buoyant jazz improvisations to create a dazzling new idiom."Mark Holston -Jazziz"On Metal Caribe, Zellon produces his most well-travelled, seamless effort yet, illustrating the common threads in music and cultural experience through endlessly surprising compositions and arrangements." -JazzTimes"...Zellon transcends the Cuban and/or Brazilian confines established by most Latin jazz practitioners." - Latin Beat"Zellon makes a compelling case for Latin jazz as a new kind of international language on Metal Caribe." -Hispanic"If there is one contemporary musician who truly personifies the successful synthesis of the myriad pan-American genres into unconventional and compelling new forms, it is undoubtedly Lima, Peru-born guitarist, composer, and all around music alchemist ...

| | Bracket Live In A Dive CD (2002)
Ten Thousand Fists
$11.39 Bracket has long enthralled the punk scene with its skewered view of the world and unconventional take on punk. After a string of releases, the quartet now delivers up Live in a Dive, which works equally well as a best-of (so far) set. Drawing songs off Bracket's albums, EPs, and even a pair from compilations, the band aims to please. And the crowd at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill, back in the summer of 1999, were definitely appreciative. Still, Marty Gregori is nervous, listeners know, because he keeps saying so. It might just be the pressure of the live recording, but judging by the group's repertoire, there's more to it than that. From the joyous jitters of "Trailer Park," which slips into pure paranoia, to finding the world so overwhelming he asks it to shut up on "Hearing Aid," Bracket is a basket of neuroses brought to song. Unable to let go, the singer is "Happy to Be Sad," withdrawing into the world of a "Hermit." It may sound like an emotional maelstrom, but the band isn't the attention-seeking "Circus Act" that the song titles and lyrics may suggest. Musically, Bracket creates a close thicket of sound that runs the gamut from power ballads through infectious punk, and pushes the envelope into the realm of hard rock (shades of the band's youthful infatuation with AC/DC). Bracket often combines all three styles in one song, skidding between tempo changes and alterations of mood. Onstage, this quirkiness is even more to the fore, but years on the road have polished the band's sound to a sleek eccentricity that is its major draw. Live in a Dive captures the emotional ups and down, the fun and the fury, the thunder and the fragility, the vigor and vulnerability, and sends them straight out of your speakers. And if that's not enough enticement, the enhanced CD offers up interviews ...
