For its fourth full-length studio album, Sigur Ros returns to the sound that made the Icelandic ensemble an internationally renowned rock band. Whereas the group's first outing, VON, was dark and heavy, and 2002's () was often ambient and drone-driven, TAKK...sees Jonsi Birgisson and the lads revisiting the chiming, soaring aesthetic of AGAETIS BYRJUN, the quartet's acclaimed breakthrough record. On this 2005 disc, Sigur Ros's melodies and rhythms ebb and flow beautifully, occasionally building to fierce, guitar-laden crests. Birgisson's high, wispy vocals are still key to the band's sound, but the foursome's intuitive instrumental work, which is highlighted by atmospheric keyboards and pounding percussion, truly carries these songs, resulting in a potent, mesmerizing album.
Sigur Rós: Jonsi Birgisson (vocals, guitar); Kjartan Sveinsson (keyboards); Georg Holm (bass guitar); Orri Páll DyRason (drums).Rolling Stone (No. 983, p.104) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...TAKK... suggests a far more abstract Coldplay, stripped of their stadium bombast...." Spin (p.139) - "Birgisson sings in tongues most of us can't comprehend, and thus he can punch emotional buttons in a strangely direct way." - Grade: A Entertainment Weekly (No. 840, p.88) - "...[T]he thundering majesty of harder tracks...finds its strings-laden counterpart in the swooning, slow-mo abstraction that makes up the bulk of this disc..." - Grade: A- Uncut (p.109) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[E]motionally seductive....Dark clouds of intensity gather and then slowly disperse, leaving a crystalline calm." Magnet (p.108) - "TAKK's mini suites play out with typically complex beauty....Gathering tiny moments of clarity into big, breathtaking shapes that are glorious to examine from near or far." The Wire (p.63) - "The music's strengths lie in its sheer vastness, depicting a series of enormous peaks and crescendos before suddenly cutting back to tiny details, contrasting the hugeness of the group's full sound with the fragility of some of its elements." Mojo (Publisher) (p.60) - Ranked #27 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "A coming-of-age album from Iceland's etherealists." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 - "TAKK...delivers a mighty, crashing release of soul-wringing, meat-eating noise to resolve its complex, tension-building miniaturism." Takk... Takk... Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Recant of prior posting I have to confess. I listened to it several times and concede this is brilliant.
I guess I just expected something a bit different and when it was not it, I was initially disappointed.I guess my earlier post was reactionary.
I recant my earlier posting in spades. The cd just gets better and now I can't stop listening to it. I am definitely going to the concert in Indianapolis in February! Submitted by mrmoore01 (Jeffrey Moore Bloomington, Indiana) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stunning.... Their best work yet. Submitted by fervidtorpor (Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Melodic and Masterful The songwriting has matured, the band is tight as ever, and the melodic sensory overload of Takk will infect you deliciously. The band has added more instruments and amazing percussion, without losing the fresh angst and anguished driving force of Jonsi's haunting vocals. You just have to applaud the effort! You just have to applaud a group like this who go totally off the mainstream page to make some of the most beautiful music ever made. This is not like Radiohead or Bjork, this music has form and substance in an asymetrical presentation. This is prog art at it's finest! These guys are as good as Genesis in it's earlier Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett days. They'll go far if they stay true to form and don't sell out to pop or some other flavor of the day like Genesis did! Submitted by mheinen3 (Warr Acres, OK USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$11.65 This stately Iceland rock outfit took the alternative-music world by storm with its second album, AGAETIS BYRJUN--a haunting, eloquent, 76-minute instant classic. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language he calls "Hopelandic" (a combination of Icelandic and his own angelic calling), over the lyrical ebb and flow of feedback-drenched guitar, gushing keyboards, gently driving bass, and drums that crash like the surf of an alien ocean. After a droning beginning, the curtains suddenly part with "Svefn-G-Englar," revealing a sound as wide open and exhilarating ...

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Takk... music CDs
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' ...
| | Sigur Ros Von CD (1997)
Takk... songs
$22.09 Although it wasn't released in the United States until 2004, VON is actually Sigur Ros's debut album (released in Iceland in 1997). The band made a grand appearance on the world stage in 1999 with AGAETIS BYRJUN, and were quickly heralded for their evocative, majestic guitar-scapes and their ability to conjure the mythic expanses of their native country with a blend of instrumental post-rock, ethereal vocals, wild experimentalism, and swirling shoegazer aesthetic. Fans of that album might expect VON to be a blueprint of AGAETIS, yet it is as markedly different from its successor as () (the band's third album) was to its predecessor.
The lengthy opening track (named after the band) contains a cacophony of unsettling sounds and minimal electronica, putting the listener on notice that VON is not your average indie rock outing. The rest of the album veers between dreamy, gentle, floating-in-space ambience and atmospheric, guitar-heavy excursions that owe an obvious debt to My Bloody Valentine. On several tracks vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson lets his lilting, androgynous voice float above the fray, putting the defining stamp on the group's sound. Unique, ...

| | Paula Frazer Place Where I Know CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Takk... album
$11.59 A PLACE WHERE I KNOW compiles home recorded versions of Paula's favorite songs plus two previously unreleased tracks.
Perhaps the only thing more surprising than how perennially overlooked Paula Frazer's songwriting has been is just how consistently great it has been over the years. A Place Where I Know: 4-Track Songs 1992-2002 is an intimate audio sketchbook that also functions nearly as well as a greatest-hits collection, gathering most of the highlights from her two Tarnation albums, Gentle Creatures and Mirador, as well as her first album under her own name, Indoor Universe. As gorgeous as those albums are, their slightly fussy productions occasionally detract from Frazer's songwriting, and surround her remarkable voice with arrangements that sometimes compete with it instead of compliment it. Here, it's just that voice, her guitar, some overdubs, and the songs. Unlike many artists, Frazer has a good sense of her strongest work, and A Place Where I Know begins with three of her best songs: Indoor Universe's reflective, regretful "The Only One," a beautifully spare version of Gentle Creatures' "Halfway to Madness," and Mirador's "An Awful Shade of Blue," on which Frazer's vocalizing sounds like the wind blowing through the trees. Her music has always been ethereal, but the lack of drums and soft blanket of bedroom-studio hiss that covers it here makes it even more so. The collection divides its time fairly evenly between Indoor Universe and Mirador, with only Gentle Creatures being somewhat under-represented. The great versions of the songs that are here whet the appetite for demo ...
