New label, new band member, same brilliant Opeth. The most obvious change from their previous two releases, DELIVERANCE (2002) and DAMNATION (2003), is the permanent addition of previous touring keyboard player Per Wiberg. His organ work, specifically, creates new textures only hinted at on previous releases. While many of Opeth's peers have opted to phase out their death-metal vocals entirely, Mikael Akerfeldt continues to alternate his always-improving clean vocals with his traditional growls. The result is the band's most varied and fully realized album to date.

The thing with bandleader Michael Akerfelt is he has once again pushed the boundaries even further than before and has proved himself as a true master of his craft, mainly as a formidable songwriter and talented musician. The thought that is put into each track combining the atmosphere of “light and darkness” is breathtaking. One thing that is very apparent with Opeth is they have stuck to their tried and tested formula, bettering themselves each time and remaining true to themselves throughout their long and illustrious career. To date “Ghost Reveries” has to be their most accomplished work and is one slab of technical death metal delivered with innovative precision. There are at least three tracks sung using clean vocals and what a voice Michael Akerfelt has, so very soulful. The remainder of the album is a mixture of gruff and clean vocals, which is reminiscent with Opeth's sound that we have all grown to love and appreciate over the years. The musicianship is excellent as usual and mention must be made of the other band members who deliver as what one would expect, just classy musicianship. There is not one weak track on the album, but for me my personal favourite has to be without a doubt “The grand Conjuration” which has so many uniquely different signature time changes and atmospheric moods. In conclusion, anyone that has not embraced the Opeth sound is doing themselves a musical injustice. The death metal label might scare some people away, but this should not be the case as Opeth have the amazing ability to weave and create such beautiful intricate music that infuses itself into other metal genres. Hmmmmmmm I'm a huge fan of the prog death genre, but Opeth has got to be one of the most boring bands I've heard. The music would be decent if they cut down on the song lengths. The clean vocal attempts on the album come out to sound kind of whiny, the growls are good though (I've always loved his work with Bloodbath) If you too thought this was boring you should check out a band called In Mourning, they are sort of like Opeth, with shorter songs and they are also a little more agressive. Opeth to the throne!!! Opeth is truly a band with Unique talent and awesome song writings... I have never heard such a distinctive sound and compositions... Blended with different musical genre with clean and death metal vocals.... This is something for people who are opened minded and who seek to challenge the musical bounderies.... Melodic and heavy plus epic songs more than 10 mins....It is a feast for me cause I love long structured songs....I love it!! Submitted by elton_lee19 (New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of the Best! This was the first opeth album i heard. Even though i have only heard this CD along with watershed (i am working on getting the rest if them) I think this one is excellent. The new album is great as well, but this one is where it all began for me, and i will always have a soft spot for this CD. If you like prog metal then try this CD. $12.95 Nevermore's sixth album arrives bearing few surprises -- which, for a band less accomplished or too comfortable in their niche, would generally be seen as a negative attribute. Not here, as Seattle's finest mid-'00s heavy metal outfit (sorry Queensrÿche!) continue to set the bar for purist-leaning metal-heads on this side of the pond. As always, and not to take anything away from their cohorts (particularly drummer extraordinaire Van Williams), the ...

$39.39 'Present' is an album where Steeleye revisit their greatest moments. With 33 years at the forefront of British folk-rock, there's no shortage of classics to choose from, & the selection has been chosen by the people who know best - the fans - in an online poll. While Steeleye's two mainstream hit singles are inevitably present, (the folk-pop of 'All Around My Hat', & the sublime acapella Christmas hit 'Gaudete'), the album serves as a reminder of the range & influence of their music, from the epic folk-rock of tracks such as 'Thomas The Rhymer' & 'King Henry' to the intensity of 'Lyke Wake Dirge'. Recorded shortly before setting out on an ...

$9.35 Hi Friends and Listeners My name is Denny Casey and this letter is to introduce and to tell you a little about myself. I was born and raised in Erie, Pa.I began playing music in the local bars when I got out of the military in the 60's. At that time we learned to play all of the Beatles songs and other popular groups and artists of the time including Motown, Chicago, Young Rascals, Dooby Bros. etc. That's what I did for a living 5 to 7 nights a week. Sometime in the mid seventies I went back to my roots, which were in country and southern rock. We began doing Eagles, Charlie Daniels, Alabama and all of the popular artists of that time. This is when I began to get interested in writing and ...
