Faces Nod Is As Good As A Wink... To A Blind Horse CD  (1971)

When this was released in 1971, the Faces also released LONG PLAYER (following the dropping of "Small" from the band's name) and frontman Rod Stewart released the seminal EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY. The three-album output was especially remarkable for the Faces, as the band was more known for skirt-chasing and carousing than recording music. NOD found the Faces fusing together a grittier blues and soul sound than on past efforts, which were marked by a rather modish sound and Stewart's then-folkier leanings. The group includes enough heartfelt ruminations to add a sentimental edge to the otherwise rip-roaring mix of material. Among the latter class of songs are a shambling cover of Chuck Berry's "Memphis, Tennessee" and "Stay With Me," the Faces' only hit and the quintessential groupie kiss-off. Stewart's talents as a balladeer are no less effective, with songs like the poignant "Love Lives Here" and the Ronnie Lane-penned duet "Debris," an unheralded classic every bit as emotionally devastating as "Wild Horses." Lane's singing and songwriting also shine on the barroom anthem "Last Orders Please" and the whimsically swaggering "You're So Rude," a song about getting ...

Lane takes lead vocals on his own "Flags and Banners" and wrote the majority of the album's latter half. The remaining parts of OOH LA LA include Stewart and Wood's boogie-fried "Silicone Grown" and two songs spotlighting the inimitable keyboardist Ian McLagan--the atypically poppy, almost Elton John-like "Cindy Incidentally" and the stomping rocker "Borstal Boys," one of the Faces' finest tunes. Although hints of the band's dissolution are everywhere throughout the record, this is paradoxically also the most "group"-like album the Faces ever did, with all five members making significant contributions. By the time the Faces' fourth album came out in 1973, Rod Stewart had already become a solo superstar, causing stresses within the band. Stewart and founding member/bassist Ronnie Lane reportedly fought throughout the making of OOH LA LA, particularly when Stewart's solo commitments kept him from attending Faces recording sessions. That tension is perhaps evident in the grooves of OOH LA LA--it's probably not a coincidence that ...

On 2006's JAGGED, influential synth-pop artist Gary Numan is firmly entrenched in the dark side. This ominous studio outing finds the British singer/multi-instrumentalist focused on atmosphere more than catchy hooks (a la his lone hit "Cars"), seemingly picking up where David Bowie left off on 1995's OUTSIDE (minus that disc's busy narrative conceit). Numan is clearly committed to weighty industrial arrangements on this album, as best evidenced on the heavy, brooding "Halo," which washes listeners in a wave of distorted guitar lines and pounding rhythms. Perhaps more than any other Numan release, this disc will appeal to metal ...
Beautiful Vision
Van Morrison Beautiful Vision CD  (1982)

Twenty-Seven music CDs
CD $6.39  Top 500 Audio Samples
Morrison kicked off the '80s with a new musical direction, and BEAUTIFUL VISION marks that turning point. Though Van was a lifelong devotee of American roots music, he put his R&B influences on the backburner for a while, instead pursuing the more spiritual side of his muse, which had always been present, but never given this much room to roam since his very first release, ASTRAL WEEKS. An important element here is the synthesizer and trumpet work of Mark Isham, which provide spacious, ambient musical textures, upon which Van's spiritual insights float. Detractors claim that this period in Morrison's artistic development (a process that continued unabated throughout his entire career), was too mellow, too new-agey. What they fail to grasp is the fact that Morrison was probably the only artist capable of utilizing the very elements they bemoan and not turning it into a goopy, pseudo-mystical mess. The man has a genuine gift for articulating the spiritual. A notable exception to this direction is the funky "Cleaning Windows," a light-hearted look back at one of Morrison's youthful occupations. Live Recording Recorded at The Record Plant, Sausalito, California. Personnel: ...
