Oliver Nelson - Live From Los Angeles CD

Much of Oliver Nelson's creative energy was spent on themed projects (Berlin Dialogue, the Kennedy Legacy) and, some might argue, wasted on TV scores. But in "Live From Los Angeles", Nelson and the boys let it all hang out in a good, old fashioned big band jam session with dueling saxes, driving rhythms and a little bit of yelling and screaming in the backgroound. "Milestones" is the highlight of this album, hitting the ground running and never stopping. A young Tom Scott tears up the floor and Ed Thigpen punches the accents just the way a good big band drummer should. The sparkling quality of this live recording makes you look twice at the liner notes-- yes, it was recorded almost 40 years ago. Go get it before it goes away.
