If you long for the days of when Beck Hansen was a nobody, armed with only his quirkiness and a sampler, then the debut album by Tim Fite, Gone Ain't Gone, is definitely recommended. Fewer and fewer rock artists of the early 21st century are following in the footsteps of what seemed like the "future of rock" during the mid- to late '90s -- creating songs from samples of other artists. The chameleon-like Brooklyn-based artist adapts to several different styles on his debut, most notably assuming the identity of a rapper on "Forty-Five Remedies," a new waver on "No Good Here," and a folkie on "Took a Wife." But Gone Ain't Gone is not entirely samples, as several real, breathing musicians stop by to add to the unpredictable sonic stew, including a cellist, a baritone ukulele plucker, and even Ben Kweller, who lends some 12-string guitar work to the sleepy album closer, "The More You Do." Samples may prove to be a major ingredient here, but Fite succeeds at keeping things surprisingly organic sounding throughout. With Gone Ain't Gone, Tim Fite proves that slacker rock is still alive and well. ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Tim Fite (vocals); Ben Kweller (acoustic 12-string guitar, 12-string guitar); Danielle Stech (ukulele); Danielle Stech (baritone ukulele); Justin Riddle, Justin Riddle (drums); Madigan Shive (cello).

Gone Ain't Gone album
$10.15 Mates of State are the husband-wife duo of Kori Gardner on keys of various types and Jason Hammel on drums and occasional keys as well. They both sing with innocent gusto, and their charming voices remind one of wonderful indie pop bands like Papas Fritas and Butterglory in the way they intertwine and twist with naïve fervor. They sound like real people singing about real things, and that is kind of exciting. And they don't use guitars of any kind. And you don't miss them either! Team Boo is the band's fullest sounding, most energy-filled record yet. The duo called in Jim Eno of Spoon and John Croslin, who has worked with Spoon also as well as Beulah and the Mates on their first disc, to produce. Together they have concocted a record that leaps out of the speakers with a feeling of manic joy and excitement. Songs like "Fluke," "Ha Ha," and "Gotta Get a Problem" dance with the energy of kids and reel with the flush of first love. Every now and then the record slows down the pace and deals with heavier issues like on the stately "Parachutes (Funeral Song)" or "An Experiment," but ...

Gone Ain't Gone CD music
$13.05 On his second album for Merge Records, M. Ward refines his inventive indie-folk sound, opting for a pleasantly laid-back mood. The record opens with a beautiful instrumental reading of Brian Wilson's "You Still Believe in Me," a song so marked by Ward's distinctive acoustic-guitar phrasing that it's easy ...
| | Sparks Hello Young Lovers CD (2006)
Gone Ain't Gone music CDs
$11.45 Ron and Russell Mael, aka Sparks, have been making some of the most confounding and incredibly enjoyable music of the past 30 years. HELLO YOUNG LOVERS (2006) stays true to Sparks' manic tradition and holds up against the band's classic 1970s albums. For newcomers, the easiest musical reference point for Sparks is Queen: both bands share a fondness for the operatic potential of rock and pop. Sparks' artistry, however, is in a world completely unto itself, and avoids rock clichés at every turn while somehow managing to embrace all of them. Take for example the opener, "Dick Around": with its ...

| | Poetry On Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work (1888-2006) CDs (2006)
Gone Ain't Gone album
$34.99 Liner Note Authors: Rebekah Presson Mosby; Al Young.
Poetry on Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work 1888-2006, the deluxe, artfully presented box set from Shout Factory, is essentially (though not related to commercially) a new, updated version of In Their Own Voices: A Century of Recorded Poetry released in 1996 by Rhino. Perhaps it's because they were assembled by the same person, Rebekah Presson Mosby, who compiled not only the Rhino anthology, but also Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like the Rivers: Black Poets Read Their Work and, with Elise Paschen, Poetry Speaks, and she writes the extended liner essay here entitled "Our Lives Distilled." This set was introduced -- as was the Rhino anthology -- with a different essay, by poet, educator, and author Al Young. Much of the material on the Rhino set is replicated here. In the case of writers from the 19th century through the early '50s, this is understandable. After all, how many tapes of Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson (there has been some deabte as tothe authenticity of these two recordings), and W.B. Yeats can there be? What isn't here is other poets -- poets who haven't had the same work duplicated over and over -- and why, when there is so much else available? Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, ...

He has gained a very large following throughout the Southwest while touring other countries including Sweden and Australia."Before You Say Amen" is the first Country Gospel album from Trevino. It is a project that he had wanted to do for a very long time."I have always loved Country Gospel music," Trevino said from his Texas home. "I wanted to record a Country Gospel album, but my former record label didn't want to have have anything to do with it. After signing with Heart of Texas Records, I asked Tracy Pitcox about doing one featuring the same type of music that I am known for. This ...
