With roots in the Los Angeles burlesque scene, the Pussycat Dolls are a blatantly sensual dance-pop group, as revealed on their debut, PCD. Led by vocalist Nicole Scherzinger, the Dolls excel at steamy club workouts, most notably the slinky, strip-joint-ready "Don't Cha," which features rapper Busta Rhymes, and an electronica-tinged take on the 1980s Soft Cell hit "Tainted Love."

PCD album
$10.45 The Black Eyed Peas' fourth outing, MONKEY BUSINESS, picks up right where their platinum-selling breakout album, ELEPHUNK, left off, with the feel of a non-stop party run by an ultra-savvy DJ. "Pump It" opens the disc on a straight sample of Dick Dale's surf classic "Misirlou," as the three MCs of BEP float in and out--sometimes rapid-fire, sometimes measured--with Fergie stepping in on cue to alternately sing softly or with deep, soulful emotion.
The Peas' origins are tied to the DJ-driven world of breakdancing, and that flavor saturates MONKEY BUSINESS, as beats drop in and out, tracks blend into other tracks, and a lighthearted spirit of sophisticated ecstasy prevails. The aforementioned "Pump It" slides flawlessly into the lively single "Don't Phunk with My Heart," and the stage for ...
| | Rihanna Girl Like Me CD (2006)
PCD CD music
$12.55 Rihanna's "Pon the Replay" was the jam of summer 2005, and with good reason: its Caribbean-flavored rhythms and infectious, singalong chorus made it nearly irresistible. The Barbados-born singer's full-length, MUSIC OF THE SUN, performed well on the strength of the single, and offered more of Rihanna's commercially tailored dancehall-pop.
A GIRL LIKE ME, Rihanna's sophomore release, is less overtly dancehall-influenced than its predecessor. Instead, the album makes a more straightforward play for ...

PCD album
$12.65 The Naked Music blueprint for house and disco -- a return to sounds lush and heavily evocative, with plenty of textured R&B and jazz touches, but an attention to detail rivalling that of the most introspective techno producers -- has been copied far and wide. The sheer generic quality of most of it only serves to distinguish the real thing, especially when it's as magical and refreshing as Aquanote's The Pearl. Surely one of the best production jobs of the year, Gabriel René's great achievement is to shatter all the cliches of jazz-house (waves of echoey, minor-chord synth, subpar beats, lame vocal features, and track after track of Roy Ayers-rehash songwriting) with his superior skills: at arranging, engineering, mixing, basically everything except the vocals (he recruited three or four live musicians for each track, but took care of everything else himself). "One Wish" is a Prelude throwback through and through, from the precise jazz-guitar solos to the omnipresent female chorus. "Heartbreaker" is a nice contemporary R&B track, just a little too distinctive to have much hope on commercial radio unless it was attached to a star vocalist -- in which case it'd easily blow up. "Never Let It Go" is a deep dub feature for vocalist Naomi Nsombi. The rest are some of the ...
| | Whitney Houston One Wish: The Holiday Album CD (2003)
PCD CD music
$8.49 Whitney Houston's soulful, elastic voice was practically made to wrap around Christmas standards, but despite the naturalness of the match, ONE WISH, out for Christmas 2003, as the singer neared her third decade of performing, marks her first holiday album. What lies within shouldn't disappoint as she covers many familiar tunes with just a sprinkle of recent music, the sweet-as-sugar title track originally by Freddie Jackson.
While Houston's been through her share of publicized drama over the years, her voice ...

| | Winner: The Roots Of Gregory Isaacs CD (2007)
PCD album For Sale Pre-Order Now! Available: Tuesday, December 08, 2009
$11.98 Like his immediate predecessors Alton Ellis and John Holt, Gregory Isaacs is most famous for his way with a love song, and if that alone was all he did, he would still be considered one of Jamaica's greatest pop singers, but in his four-decade-long career, Isaacs has done a lot more than just sing love songs. A quick look at his extensive discography reveals an astute songwriter who has tackled issue songs dealing with poverty, war, Jamaican (and world) politics, and all manner of spiritual and Rasta-related matters as well. Then there is his Jamaican image, where he is the virtual template for the original Kingston rude boy, and his frequent arrests and jail stays have given him a street cred that informs and gives immediacy to even his sweetest love songs. Isaacs' peak years internationally came in the late '70s and early '80s, when he was signed and distributed by large labels like Island Records, but he had been a star in Jamaica for close to a decade before then, and as shown by this collection of his early tracks (recorded between 1968 and 1978), he was truly something special from the start. Included here are his self-written, self-produced, and self-released first single, "Another Heartache," from 1968 (a recut done with producer Alvin Ranglin in 1974 is also included); the Rupie ...
