| | Sean Paul Trinity CD Sean Paul Discography of CDs
(43 Customer Reviews)
Anticipation for Sean Paul's follow-up to 2003's mega-successful DUTTY ROCK was running high by the time 2005's THE TRINITY hit the streets. But fans expecting a reprise of the light, fun dancehall pop that made DUTTY ROCK such a commercial success will be in for a surprise here. THE TRINITY has a much harder-edged sound than its predecessor, and there is little of the buoyancy or melodic hooks that made that album accessible.
Instead, THE TRINITY is produced with the club in mind. Tunes like "Head in the Zone" and "Send It On" are characterized by driving dancehall rhythms, hypnotic rapid-fire vocal cadences, and urban R&B touches that give the tracks a glamorous sheen, with Sean Paul laying down lyrics about sex, partying, and good times that suit the music perfectly for the contemporary club scene. The old-school reggae flavored "Yardie Bone," featuring a slick bounce that recalls Steel Pulse, helps add balance to this edgy collection of slightly less than mainstream dancehall.

Trinity
$11.09 DUTTY ROCK won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album. Sean Paul was nominated for Best New Artist. "Get Busy" was nominated for Best Male Rap Solo Performance.
Though he'd released successful singles earlier, Jamaican toaster Sean Paul became a full-blown international dancehall reggae sensation with his 2000 full-length debut STAGE ONE. Picking up where that album left off, DUTTY ROCK dips into hip-hop production techniques in addition to the usual dancehall tricks, providing a unique framework for Sean's visceral, rapid-fire raps. Amid all the modern production, "I'm Still in Love with You" (not the Al Green tune) finds SP dipping into the roots-reggae trickbag, with vocal assistance from Sasha. And unlike some of his contemporaries, he's not without a sense of humor. The introductory skit, which finds him hilariously ...
| | Black Eyed Peas Monkey Business CD (2005) Digipak
Trinity
$10.95 The Black Eyed Peas' fourth outing, MONKEY BUSINESS, picks up right where their platinum-selling breakout album, ELEPHUNK, left off, with the feel of a non-stop party run by an ultra-savvy DJ. "Pump It" opens the disc on a straight sample of Dick Dale's surf classic "Misirlou," as the three MCs of BEP float in and out--sometimes rapid-fire, sometimes measured--with Fergie stepping in on cue to alternately sing softly or with deep, soulful emotion.
The Peas' origins are tied to the DJ-driven world of breakdancing, and that flavor saturates MONKEY BUSINESS, as beats drop in and out, tracks blend into other tracks, and a lighthearted spirit of sophisticated ecstasy prevails. The aforementioned "Pump It" slides flawlessly into the lively single "Don't Phunk with My Heart," and the stage for the album is set. Icons James Brown and Sting drop by, on the uncompromisingly funky "They Don't Want Music" and the reggae-soaked "Union," respectively, but they're just guests on board for the ride (along with Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and ...
| | Rihanna Music Of The Sun CD (2005)
Trinity
$11.49 Taking its cue from the rhythms of dancehall and reggaeton, Rihanna's MUSIC OF THE SUN is a dance-pop record with enough distinctive accents and flavors to make it stand out from the crowd. Rihanna's debut takes island-influenced beats and Jamaican-inflected accents and superimposes them on straight-up contemporary R&B. The combination works nicely, as evidenced by "Pon de Replay," the album's incredibly infectious lead-off track and single. Rihanna effectively synthesizes reggae's cadences into her singsong ...
| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Trinity
$13.35 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly ...
| | Mary J Blige Breakthrough CD (2005)
Trinity
$12.99 After her somewhat lukewarm 2003 release LOVE & LIFE, Mary J. Blige returns to her rightful place as the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul with 2005's THE BREAKTHROUGH. Blige enlisted a host of guest producers to contribute tracks to THE BREAKTHROUGH, and the result is one of her strongest and most varied albums. As usual, the sound is a mixture of smooth, urban contemporary and hip-hop edge, but Blige nails it with tracks like the pulsing "Enough Cryin'" (with its rich, multi-layered vocals) and the breezy "Can't Hide From Luv" featuring a guest spot by Jay-Z.
The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on feelings of strength and weakness in love. But whether waxing romantic ("Can't Get Enough") or detailing the travails of the heart ("Baggage"), Blige lays ...
| | Ne-Yo In My Own Words CD (2005)
Trinity
$11.11 By the time of his Def Jam solo debut in 2006, Ne-Yo had already been a high-profile behind-the-scenes figure in contemporary R&B, penning hits for the likes of Faith Evans and Mary J. Blige. Like those artists, Ne-Yo's music is influenced by hip-hop beats and production values, but falls squarely under the rubric of modern soul, and the talent he displayed writing for others is abundant here.
The grooves ...
