| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
You Rascal You CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble harmonics, rhythmic invention, and, of course, tautly arranged spaces for individual improvisation--check out the album's longest cut, "Tagriel," for evidence as Zorn's composition not only travels genres but centuries. The popping showcase for solos that is "Serakel" is nonetheless a grooving post-bop tune with a joyous klezmer lyric line. The sheer shimmering beauty of "Psisya," ...

| | Warren Vache Recorded Live In Hamburg CD (1999) (Import) Germany
You Rascal You songs
$18.19 Like Ruby Braff and a long line of players who proceeded him, Warren Vaché is devoted to both the cornet and great melodies. Joined by some of England's top musicians, along with brother Allan Vaché on clarinet on a few tracks, he put together a set dominated by standards from several decades, swinging like mad throughout this 1994 concert at Amerika Haus in Hamburg. The band includes pianist Brian Lemon, guitarist Dave Cliff, bassist Dave Green, and drummer Allan Ganley. There's a sense of camaraderie on the bandstand with no one overly hogging the spotlight. Vaché is full of ideas in the breezy take of "My Shining Hour," while his brother is added for lightly swinging "Poor Butterfly." But two gems from Duke Ellington's vast repertoire are easily the highlights of ...

| | Erik Friedlander Quake CD (2003)
You Rascal You CD music
$15.59 On Quake, downtown cello boss Erik Friedlander teams up with Japan's fraternal rhythm section the Takeishi brothers (Stomu and Satoshi on bass and drums, respectively) as well as alto saxophonist Andy Laster for a date of intimate, knotty new jazz. In working with an electric bassist in this setting, the opportunities for unique tonalities are everywhere and are exploited to some degree as they were on an earlier work, The Watchman. Over the years, however, Friedlander has become a composer of interesting ensembles and Quake's is no exception. What is so remarkable about the performances on this recording are details such as counterpoint; on the opener, Laster and Stomu have equal opportunities to engage Friedlander and each other for a knotty, but exhilarating, ride. On the erratically paced and wonderfully breathless "Wire," Friedlander brings shades of different jazz eras and styles to comprise the body of the composition while intense harmonic invention takes places in each musician's solo. The title cut uses Israeli folk themes to construct an ebb-and-flow narrative statement that engages elements of modal jazz, post-bop, klezmer, smoky, simmering funk, and other Middle Eastern music on its ride into ecstasy. ...
| | Garbage Bleed Like Me CD (2005) Bonus Track; Japan
You Rascal You music CDs
$29.05 Garbage's mantra for BLEED LIKE ME could be "that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger," given the emotional and creative upheaval this unit went through in the four years that elapsed between this disc and 2001's BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE. Following personal conflicts and health woes for both Butch Vig and Shirley Manson, the quartet stripped down its sound and amped up the guitars to create an angst-laced album reminiscent of the Breeders and Foo Fighters.
Apparently, bad circumstances make for great art, and this collection of songs is no exception. When Manson isn't purring lines like "Hey, baby can you bleed like me" over the moody synth washes of the title cut, she's striking a defiant pose over the Kim Deal-like bass lines of "Sex Is Not the Enemy." Elsewhere, the echoing guitars and rumbling bass of "Run Baby Run" bring to mind a delicious fusion of New Order and the Cure. Vig's longtime friend and associate Dave Grohl even puts in a memorable drumming appearance amid a wall of guitars on the ...
