In following up his exceptionally strong 2003 release, SEE IF I CARE, country singer Gary Allan opted to stick to his New Traditionalist guns, resulting in another compelling set of songs. TOUGH ALL OVER opens boldly with the rock-tinged title track (penned in part by Jim Lauderdale), and proceeds to mix sensitive ballads ("Best I Ever Had" and "Life Ain't Always Beautiful") with twangy mid-tempo tunes ("I Just Got Back from Hell"). The standout song, however, is "Nickajack Cave (Johnny Cash's Redemption)," an intriguing narrative about the Man in Black's darkest days that hints at Cash's signature sound without attempting to duplicate it.

Each track is different from the next (almost unheard of these days) and each song focuses on the guitar in a slightly different style. Grade: A. Tough All Over..Indeed. Gary Allan's "Tough All Over" is an excellent buy for country fans. If you've never heard Gary before, you need to hear this CD. Its his best yet. My favorite song is the whole CD. It is that good. The first day I bought it, I listened to the CD, in full, 5 times in a row. Gary has a very unique voice and way of singing/carrying a song. He is a true artist of his craft.

On his first couple of albums for Decca, Gary Allan's talent was somewhat submerged in assembly-line Nashville production. After a label change, his third disc, 1999's SMOKE RINGS IN THE DARK found him fulfilling his potential with a rootsy, accessible New Traditionalist sound. A few years down the line, he continues to progress, bucking the Nashville Nazis along the way.
