| | Ramsey Lewis With One Voice CD Ramsey Lewis Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Years before he became known for hits like "The In Crowd" and "Wade in the Water," Ramsey Lewis had been recognized in his local Chicago community as a gifted classical and gospel pianist. A live document of his 2005 return to his religious roots, WITH ONE VOICE brings Lewis's signature spare, swinging style to bear on stirring and polished instrumental performances of gospel classics like "Oh Happy Day" and "Pass Me Not," as well as more contemporary compositions, like Smokie Norful's "God Can Work it Out" and Darius Brooks's "Healed Heart," both heard here sung by their composers.

JazzTimes (p.90) - "Lewis wrote half the tunes here, including the beautiful instrumental 'Thoughts and Reflections.' With One Voice album
$9.09 Burgeoning smooth jazz superstar Steve Cole continues to bridge the gap between pop-jazz and classic R&B on his third studio album, NY LA. Featuring strong melodic statements and truly funky keyboards via the likes of Brian Culbertson and Marquis "Hami" Dair, NY LA is a moody and solid affair. From the disco-influenced "Off Broadway," which harkens back to the best work of the Crusaders, to the Donald Byrd-esque "Interlude IV," tenor saxophonist Cole deftly crosses the boundary from jazz soloist to R&B heavyweight. More Grover Washington, Jr. than Kenny G., Cole manages to keep things organic and simple -- despite the use of programmed drum beats and synthesizers -- a lesson some of his ...
| | Bobby Lyle Straight And Smooth CDs (2004)
With One Voice CD music
$14.59 Many artists who have made their mark in smooth jazz have equal facilities for and foundational backgrounds in bebop, but marketing concerns force them into one corner or the other. Some artists, like George Duke, are fortunate enough to be on labels that have allowed them to do a little of both. Bobby Lyle, a veteran keyboardist who has always infused his funky rhythm and jazz with a touch of elegance and improvisational spirit, found a good match with Three Keys Music, and here offers a dual-minded two-CD project that captures both aspects of his musical prowess. Nothing on the 11-song "Smooth" disc is quite as captivating as the material on his 2002 hit, Joyful, but there's a lot for fans of his playful side to enjoy. The bouncy, ultra-percussive jam "Tippin'" begins with Lyle's light key touch before getting more feisty and brassy; "Hip Swing" is equally funk-intensive, balancing Lyle's spirited melody with David Dyson's dark bass thump edges. "La ...

| | Steve Oliver 3D CD (2004)
With One Voice songs
$14.45 As one reviewer said of the cheerful music and personality of this increasingly popular voice of smooth jazz guitar, it's Disneyland all the time with him. In other words, Positive Energy, the name of his second genre disc, wasn't just a happy marketing tool. And the title of this disc is appropriate, too, because with the co-production help of founding Spyro Gyra keyboardist Tom Schuman, Oliver digs deep into a rich variety of influences for a multifaceted romp through the worlds of pop, jazz, urban/hip-hop, worldbeat, Brazilian, and Latin music. While focusing as always on his classic acoustic guitar and brilliant "vocalese" to convey the lead melodies on the instrumentals, he stretches into edgier blues territory with his lesser-heard electric on "In the Shade of Cool." Joining all-star guests like Fourplay drummer Harvey Mason (who adds his gentle ...
| | Boney James Pure CD (2004)
With One Voice album
$9.09 Nine albums into his career, Boney James makes a grab for the smooth-jazz crown with PURE, an outing that finds him working with a mix of soul and jazz luminaries. James ups the stakes by taking over the production reins (in addition to co-writing every song). Still front and center with his beloved tenor saxophone, this Grammy-nominated artist shifts to soprano sax for the harmony-soaked Bilal duet "Better with Time" and the silk sheets-and-champagne slow jam "Break of Dawn," featuring up-and-coming Detroit crooner Dwele.
Debi Nova adds her lovely vocals to the beat-driven "Appreciate," a cut that wouldn't sound out of place on a Toni Braxton or Brandy album. Instrumentals are still the focus, however, as revealed on the light funk of "Here ...
| | Jeff Kashiwa Peace Of Mind CD (2004)
With One Voice CD music
$12.39 Jeff Kashiwa has a fluent if generic style on soprano, alto, and tenor, which fits perfectly into the "feel good" smooth music that he performs on "Peace of Mind." The 11 selections clock in between 3:46 and 5:14 and were clearly recorded with hopes of getting maximum radio airplay. Kashiwa's rhythm section is effective if anonymous (despite the presence of Brian Bromberg on bass) with the focus being almost entirely on the leader's melodic playing. While the music is lightly grooving and mildly soulful and Kashiwa plays well, no surprises occur and this set never rises above the level of pleasant background music. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Ultravox Rage In Eden CD (1981)
With One Voice music CDs
$10.49 As before, Billy Currie's signature ARP synthesizer leads wail and squeal over the predominantly electronic rhythm tracks, and Ure's theatrical vocals up the drama quotient. But with the apocalyptic/paranoid lyrics of "The Thin Wall" and "Stranger Within," and the quiet doominess of "I Remember (Death in the Afternoon)," the group appears like ...
