| | Neil Young Prairie Wind CD Neil Young Discography of CDs
(18 Customer Reviews)
The most striking characteristic of the album is its mood, which is heavily nostalgic, melancholy, and, lyrically, full of reflections on memory, loss, and mortality. (The passing of Young's father and his own experience with a brain aneurysm ... Full Descriptionseem likely influences for the tone here). In this way, it comes close to the emotional intensity of early '70s classics like TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT, though perhaps without the edge and ragged beauty of that work. Instead, Young cut the album in Nashville with top-shelf personnel (Spooner Oldham is among the usual suspects), giving PRAIRIE WIND a smooth veneer. Still, there is a great warmth and ease to the sound, and Young turns in some of his finest songs in ages: the simple, heart-rending "It's a Dream," for example. Young has established and shattered enough categories in his time that a return to classic form like this is well-earned, and much appreciated.
Neil Young always seems to be making a comeback, but detractors who have diligently panned his releases from the 1990s and 2000s (and sometimes with good reason) will be forced to change their tune with 2005's PRAIRIE WIND. A plaintive, thoughtful, country-rock album that recalls both 1992's HARVEST MOON and 1972's HARVEST, PRAIRIE WIND is Young's strongest, most focused, and most compulsively listenable studio album since 1989's FREEDOM.
Additional personnel: Ben Keith (pedal steel guitar); Spooner Oldham (keyboards); Rick Rosas (bass guitar); Chad Cromwell (drums); Karl Himmel (percussion).

Just Neil Just OK Neil - very mellow. Nothing real remarkable in it for me. Nice stories, but he's done better. Submitted by ss1113 (Central Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
No electric guitar grunge on this CD Neil gets back to his accoustic / piano roots on this CD. The only leads are harmonica - no electric guitar solos which I like. I heard Neil suffered a brain annurism during taping - 2 of the songs are post surgery for the annurism. God bless him. I liked his electric guitar work better than this style. He is a great lyricsist though. Submitted by - Jeff (Woodstock, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

I'm a Neil Young fan now Like everyone, I've been familiar with Neil Young for many, many years. Occassionally he'd create something that I liked, but never really wowwed me. Until "Prairie Wind". What a beautiful compilation of emotions, experiences and life this album is. Thank you, Mr. Young, for giving us the real Neil Young in "Prairie Wind". Prairie Wind album
$8.49 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking ...
| | Brian Wilson Smile CD (2004)
Prairie Wind CD music
$16.19 Between 1967 and 2004, the SMILE sessions were pretty much the Dead Sea Scrolls of pop music. Well documented as head Beach Boy Brian Wilson's answer to the Beatles' masterpiece SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (which was itself largely an answer to the Beach Boys' PET SOUNDS), the tracks laid down in '67 for the projected SMILE album were the furthest afield anyone nominally operating under the pop/rock umbrella had ever ventured. Notoriously, intraband conflict (Mike Love, in particular, found the Wilson/Van Dyke Parks-penned conceptual work too far out) kept the record from being released. With several oceans' worth of water under the bridge, Wilson finally decided to finish the aborted project three-and-a-half decades later, adhering closely to the original blueprints. The results are as timelessly breathtaking as the original version must have been to the lucky few who first heard the initial tapes.
With sterling support from his backing band the Wondermints, Wilson meticulously pieced together the conceptual, orchestral puzzle of SMILE into a rewarding, cohesive whole. Even decades down the line, it still sounds miles away from anything else in the world of popular music. A series of extended vignettes tied together with seamlessly arranged ...
| | Bruce Springsteen Devils & Dust CD (2005) DualDisc
Prairie Wind music CDs
$15.79 This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
In much the same way that he followed the full-on assault of THE RIVER with the scaled-down, folk-based NEBRASKA, some two-and-a-half decades later, Bruce Springsteen made another stylistic about-face. In stark contrast to its predecessor, 2002's uplifting, epic-scale rocker THE RISING, DEVILS & DUST is a spare, quiet, acoustic-oriented album full of shadows and whispers.
Where THE RISING, a direct response to the tragedy of 9/11, rallied the spirit with impassioned optimism, the characters Bruce inhabits on DEVILS & DUST are often neck-deep in regret, bitterness, and despair. Not only does the album demonstrate the width of Springsteen's emotional range; perhaps more importantly, it contains some of his finest writing since its spiritual cousin, 1987's similarly harrowing, low-key TUNNEL OF LOVE. Over a bed of acoustic guitars, occasional keyboards, and a no-frills rhythm section (plus the odd string section--a new wrinkle), Bruce matches hard-won emotional insights with poetic reveries that never abandon personal resonance for flights ...
| | Bob Dylan No Direction Home: The Bootleg Series Vol. 7 CDs (2005)
Prairie Wind songs
$15.85 The soundtrack to Martin Scorcese's two-part PBS documentary on Bob Dylan, NO DIRECTION HOME is a two-disc affair consisting almost entirely of previously unreleased material. One couldn't start any further towards the beginning of Dylan's career than this collection's first track, "When I Got Troubles," a modest, folkish tune caught on tape by a high school friend and presumed to be the first original Dylan song ever recorded. From there, we follow the breakneck trajectory of Dylan's early career, as he develops at an unprecedented rate, from young Woody Guthrie acolyte (a rare version of Guthrie's signature tune "This Land is Your Land") to his own protest songs (Town Hall, NYC performances of "Masters of War" and "Blowin' in the Wind").
It's Disc Two where things really kick into overdrive; having made the leap from folk balladry to surreal word paintings, we hear Dylan developing musically by leaping into electric rock & roll. It's an undeniable thrill to hear the sacred texts of HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED and BLONDE ON BLONDE anew via the alternate takes included here, with modified lyrics and ...
| | Mark Knopfler All The Roadrunning CD (2006)
Prairie Wind album
$10.65 Better still is the songwriting, with the breezy back-porch opener "Beachcombing" and the stately 9/11-themed "If This Is Goodbye" among the highlights. As always, Knopfler's fluid guitar style is engaging, and it adds a shadowy, atmospheric backdrop to the roots-conscious proceedings. On the surface, ALL THE ROADRUNNING is a quiet and unassuming record, but its subtlety and grace are part of its lasting charm.
Recorded intermittently over the course of seven years, ALL ...
| | Neil Young Living With War CD (2006)
Prairie Wind CD music
$9.99 A collection of protest songs that takes the Bush administration directly to task for their actions in Iraq and elsewhere, LIVING WITH WAR boils with outrage and aches with pathos (the grungy, midtempo opener "After the Garden" is a fine example of the latter). "Let's Impeach the President" and "Lookin' for a Leader" leave little question as to Young's opinion of George W., while the crunching, electric-guitar-heavy feel of the album underscores Young's bitter aggression. The album draws on the artist's lineage ...
| | Gus Gus This Is Normal CD (1999) Enhanced CD
Prairie Wind music CDs
$13.99 THIS IS NORMAL is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, including Mixman Studio LE software which can be used to remix any song on the album.
On THIS IS NORMAL, GusGus' second full-length, the Icelandic collective shows 1995's POLYDISTORTION was just the beginning. This record brims with fun and infectious hooks, club-rocking beats, and alluring production. But the group's secret weapon might well be its undeniable spirit of optimism. GusGus makes state-of-the-art dance music, though there are enough pop elements here to appeal to a wide audience.
"Ladyshave," the opening track and initial single, is a cheekily risquT number built on a pumping ...

Prairie Wind CD music
$7.79 Given the slick pop sheen of Beyonce's tunes, their immediate accessibility and hookiness, it's not at all odd that they translate so well. This is the sort of pop that isn't culturally specific, but the Spanish language vocals clearly gives the EP an extra appeal in Latin communities. The lead-off track, "Amor Gitano," sets the tone, while a Spanglish version of "Beautiful Liar," ...
