With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record.
Personnel: Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Killer Mike, Krayzie Bone, Lil Wayne, Pastor Troy, Rasaq, Scarface, Lil' Flip, Natalie , Bun B (rap vocals).
Rolling Stone (No. 986, p.90) - 3.5 out of 5 stars - "...[C]risply enunciated flows..." Spin (pp.137-138) - "Cham hinges his distinct sound on a rich baritone..." - Grade: B+ The Wire (p.47) - "Perfecting the tightest of flows and an ability to sing the snappiest of choruses...his has gradually become one of houston's most individual voices." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[A] lethal arrangement of dank bass, rhythm tracks built from gunshots and handclaps, ornate synth-lines, and Chamillionaire's dead-calm vocal.." | | Lil Wayne Tha Carter Vol. 2 CD (2005)
Sound Of Revenge songs
$10.39 A one-time member of New Orleans's Hot Boys, rapper Lil Wayne attained a new level of confidence and skill on 2004's THA CARTER. That album featured only a few guest shots (as opposed to typically star-studded hip-hop records), and this 2005 sequel once again keeps things focused on Wayne, with the MC flying solo on almost every track. This uncluttered scenario, which relies on a spare, yet distinctly Cash Money-style musical backdrop, gives Wayne the freedom to let his laid-back rhymes stretch out, as best revealed on the ominous "Fireman" and the boastful "Best Rapper Alive." Clearly Wayne knows how to work a winning concept, since THA CARTER II stays true to both its predecessor and the relentless, unapologetic spirit of Southern rap.
Although his first studio album in three years has been long-awaited and repeatedly delayed, Lil Wayne has been anything but absent. Since THA CARTER II, Weezy has left an impressive mass of recordings--from mixtapes (authorized ...

$10.49 The album's lead-off single, "Be Without You," a bittersweet slow jam, is representative of the album's themes, which focus on feelings of strength and weakness in love. But whether waxing romantic ("Can't Get Enough") or detailing the travails of the heart ("Baggage"), Blige ...
| | Me'Shell Ndege'Ocello Peace Beyond Passion CD (1996)
Sound Of Revenge music CDs
$6.35 PEACE BEYOND PASSION was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album.
On her second album, Me'Shell NdegeOcello continues to use a seamless blend of funk, jazz, rap and soul as a bed for her sociosexual observations. There's a spiritual bent, as well, to PEACE BEYOND PASSION, in songs that take on racism, homophobia and other societal ills. The centerpieces of the album are three songs named for books of the Bible: "Deuteronomy: Niggerman," "Ecclesiastes: Free My Heart" and "Leviticus: Faggot."
The music is less hip-hop-oriented than that on her debut, PLANTATION LULLABIES, and fleshed-out with heavier jazz nuances and '70s funk shadings. It's helped along in those directions by saxophonist Joshua Redman (he played on the debut, too) and one-time Prince guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Their interplay with NdegeOcello, who swings confidently on bass, blurs many musical lines. NdegeOcello adds a Curtis Mayfield soul spin to a version of Bill Withers' "Who Is He And And What Is He To You," the one cover song here. Chunks of wah-wah guitar juice the beat along, while Paul Riser's aggressive string arrangement and Billy Preston's organ ensure the authenticity of this reading.
Personnel: Me'Shell Ndegéocello (guitar, percussion, ...
