Inspired by the aural collage of the Beatles' "Revolution Number 9," as well as the musique concrete of composers such as John Cage and Terry Riley and Bob Dylan's conscientious rock lyricism, Bill Holt quit his straight job in 1972 to follow his musical muse, hoarding various electronic gadgets and an acoustic guitar and holing up in his basement. He emerged a year later with Dreamies, one of the finest pieces of experimental pop from the era. Unlike the Beatles' White Album ...See Full Description

COMPLETE RIOT combines two 1996 UK Subs albums, QUINTESSENTIALS and RIOT. Unlike their lineup (only their vocalist, the ageless Charlie Harper, has remained a constant presence), the band's punk attack has remained intact since their late-'70s inception, as has their anti-authoritarian stance. Their stripped-down songs are succinct, mostly making their point in under two minutes, lambasting society in what has become the grand punk tradition on songs like "Rebel Radio," "Power Corrupts," and "Media Man." Once considered punk latecomers, the Subs now find themselves in the odd position of being one of the few surviving keepers of the flame.

Having suffered the tragic loss of drummer Dave Karcich to a brain aneurysm out of the blue, this former side project for Mighty Mighty Bosstones founding member Joe Gittleman (also a former member of mid-period Gang Green) has not only admirably decided to press on, but has made this his full-time trio. And compared to their promising 2002 self-titled debut, Chopstick Bridge benefits from both his greater attention and a more group-like collaboration. Maybe new bassist Amy Griffin's voice isn't as resolute as Gittleman's on her occasional lead turns, but her singing combines more effectively with Gittleman's on his. And with heavier new drummer John Lynch taking Karcich's spot, and roaring production from Paul Q. Kolderie (Pixies, Hole, Radiohead), the band more than fulfills the Hüsker Dü and Replacements comparisons of its bio. Though personally, it's older Boston outfits that come to mind, such as Moving Targets (especially), mixed with a little of the Dogmatics, the Outlets, and even the very early Neighborhoods, as well as a little of later Gang -- including some Gittleman leads that betray one of the prime influences on the above Beantowners (and the Bosstones), the first two LPs of Stiff Little Fingers. Meanwhile, Gittleman's voice is like a thicker Evan Dando, another Mass oldie. Too punk for emos, too rock & roll for punks, too big-chops for indie rockers, Chopstick is nevertheless a strong, loud-guitar-crunch bomb of a record that has a lot going for it, even if it could have been edited down a bit from 14 songs into more full-fitting shape. See the truly hot songs like "Gone and Forgotten" and "Fillmore East" if you need a taste. ~ Jack Rabid

Don't dismiss Paint It Black as a typical wannabe punk band looking to capitalize on the new-millennium wave of angst rock. Their debut album, CVA, is layered with the classic high-speed percussion, throaty vocals, and aggressive presentation found in contemporary punk revivalists; however, Paint It Black don't lose themselves in the process of rebelling against the corporate machine. This 17-song set is ablaze in frontman Dan Yemin's intense state of mind. Vocally, he might come off sounding like everyone else, but he's sharp-witted on a lyrical level. He's quick in style and sound, and behind the harsh demeanor is compassion. Paint It Black are fearless in making such a trait work for them musically, and songs like "Womb Envy" and "The Fine Art of Falling Apart" may sway you to think this is nothing more than a mess. But again, Paint It Black refuse to be ignored. Dropkick Murphys have done it with being charming, but Paint It Black make it known that they're beyond that. CVA is loaded with political debates, lacking in tradition, and those aware of ...

As can be expected with a collection that spans the years 1966 to 1971, a time when the stylistic curve changed by the month, Grapes of Wrath is wildly inconsistent. The music is certainly derivative, but the songs are fairly ...
