| | Death Vessel Stay Close CD Death Vessel Discography of CDs
The terrible band name makes Death Vessel sound like they're probably a Swedish black metal group, but in fact, their debut album is a charming exercise in country-ish folk-rock led by singer/songwriter Joel Thibodeau. There is no insult or judgment implied by this statement, but it must be said: Thibodeau sings like a girl. Seriously, anyone approaching this album without foreknowledge would simply assume that Death Vessel had a female lead singer with a voice along the lines of Gillian Welch or Tift Merritt. Thibodeau's twangy vocal style is the band's most immediately appealing element, followed by the easygoing lope of the band's arrangements, built mostly on acoustic instruments but with none of the straining for folk or country "authenticity" that hampers many similar albums. Thibodeau's primary musical partner, Erik Carlsson, formerly of the Rhode Island-based dream poppers Purple Ivy Shadows, is likely responsible for some of the more atmospheric touches that decorate these songs, but mandolin and banjo are equally well represented throughout. A low-key, unpretentious album, Stay Close is well worth a listen. ~ Stewart Mason

Like Dr. Octagon, Los Amigos Invisibles have skipped the banality of Y2K and set their sights on the next millennium on AREPA 3000: A VENEZUELAN JOURNEY INTO SPACE. AREPA is no typical retro boogie-down. The hipster boys from Caracas have followed Sun Ra's travel advice and loaded their hormonal South American blend of acid jazz disco/funk/lounge/house on a rocket ship, bound for grooves of a higher order.
The band launches a suite of sexed-up anthems with the mid-tempo "La Vecina," followed by the sweaty "Que Rico" and "Cuchi-Cuchi." Guest pop songstress Martika blows some breezy Brazilian vocals into the mellow yearning of "Si Estuvieras Aqui" (If Only You Were Here), while "Piazo 'e Perra" is big-chorus, organ-grinder funk. If HAL from the film 2001 were slipped some acid, "Pi Pi Ri" could be the soundtrack to his daydreams. The club-pop jewel "El Barro" glances ...
| | Michael Mayer Fabric 13 CD (2003)
Stay Close CD music
$15.05 Michael Mayer temporarily leaves the comfy confines of his good ship Kompakt to deliver the 13th release in the Fabric series. One might consider this the proper follow-up to 2002's Immer, since the Speicher mix -- released earlier in the year -- was more of a specialty showcase for the bangin' techno/shuffle-tech side of Kompakt's personality. This is of the same high standard as Immer in every aspect, from selection to sequence to mixing, and its features are dissimilar enough to circumvent mere sequel status. There are glints of the romantic, noir-ish undercurrents that gave Immer its nocturnal glow, but the sentiment is often playful in comparison and more tailored to a club audience. That said, one of the mix's most chilling moments might give a few people an Immer flashback. Richard Davis' "Bring Me Closer" is as dramatic and haunting as Phantom/Ghost's "Perfect Lovers" -- with its druggy vocals and multiple string elements providing ...

Stay Close songs
$18.79 The Troggs' third British LP was never issued in the U.S., where most of the tracks were unavailable for more than 20 years. For that reason, it was one of the more sought-after collector's items of the late 1960s, but the record itself isn't that great. The group followed a more subdued, soft-rock folk-psychedelic path than they had on their earlier recordings, which wasn't necessarily a bad idea, as the hit single "Love Is All Around" (included here) proved. But the songs just weren't that good, and the band sounded kind of half-hearted. Eight of the twelve tracks do show up on the Archeology collection, and the remaining four are dull, meaning that there's no reason to fork out the big bucks an original copy commands unless you need everything the Troggs made. ~ Richie Unterberger
Cellophane, the Troggs' third British LP, was never issued in the U.S., where most of the tracks were unavailable for more than 20 years (eight of the 12 cuts did eventually show up on the Archeology collection). For that reason, it was one of the more sought-after collector's items of the late '60s, but the record itself isn't that great. But the songs just weren't that good, and the band sounded kind of half-hearted. As it's done on its reissues of all three of the Troggs' erratic U.K.-issued '60s albums, Repertoire at least does collectors a big service by adding a heap of bonus tracks from singles, some of them infrequently or even never reissued on CD; the 1970 B-sides "Give Me Something" and "You" seem to be making their CD debut here. Still, the four 1969-1970 ...
