Funkadelic's masterpiece, a dark vision of what the future holds, articulated through George Clinton's slightly hazy vision and Eddie Hazel's astounding guitar work. This CD contains the original 7 track album from 1971 (remastered) plus 3 bonus tracks f

Funkadelic: Eddie Hazel , Gary Shider, Tawl Ross (vocals, guitar); Bernie Worrell (vocals, keyboards); Clarence "Fuzzy" Haskins (vocals, drums); George Clinton , Grady Thomas, Raymond Davis, Calvin Simon (vocals); Billy "Bass" Nelson (bass instrument); Ramon Tiki Fulwood (drums).
It starts with a crackle of feedback shooting from speaker to speaker and a voice intoning, "Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time, for y'all have knocked her up" and talking about rising "above it all or drown in my own sh*t." This could only have been utterly bizarre back in 1971 and it's no less so decades later; though the Mothership was well on its way already, Maggot Brain really helped it take off. The instrumental title track is the key reason to listen, specifically for Eddie Hazel's lengthy, mind-melting solo. George Clinton famously told Hazel to play "like your momma had just died," and the resulting evocation of melancholy and sorrow doesn't merely rival Jimi Hendrix's work, but arguably bests a lot of it. Accompanied by another softer guitar figure providing gentle rhythm for the piece, the end result is simply fantastic, an emotional apocalypse of sound. Maggot Brain is bookended by another long number, "Wars of Armageddon," a full-on jam from the band looping in freedom chants and airport-departure announcements to the freak-out. In between are a number of short pieces, finding the collective merrily cooking up some funky stew of the slow and smoky variety. There are folky blues and gospel testifying on "Can You Get to That" (one listen and a lot of Primal Scream's mid-'90s career is instantly explained) and wry but warm reflections on interracial love on "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks," its drum hits distorted to give a weird electronic edge to the results. "Super Stupid" is a particular killer, pounding drums and snarling guitar laying down the boogie hard and hot, while "Hit It and Quit It" has a great chorus and Bernie Worrell getting in a fun keyboard solo to boot. ~ Ned Raggett
Jimi Hendrix's untimely death in September of 1970 left a gaping hole in the funk-rock genre. With 1971's MAGGOT BRAIN, Funkadelic showed that they were rightful heirs to Hendrix's throne. This is the album where, all at once, everything seems to come together for the legendary band. Most obviously, the songwriting is sharper and more focused. As on their previous releases, epic instrumental compositions dominate. But this time they are much more coherent and less reliant on studio trickery and psychedelic effects (with the exception of the album's closer, the instrumental freak-out "Wars of Armageddon").
The stunning title track provides the ultimate vehicle for Funkadelic's late and great guitarist, Eddie Hazel. This moving ten-minute instrumental has Hazel playing through many peaks and valleys, wringing passion from his six-string, and leaving the listener drained by its conclusion. Another highlight is "You And Your Folks, Me and My Folks," a song about interracial relationships that is one of Funkadelic's most soulful tracks ever. Also included are the heavy metal thrasher "Super Stupid," the prime funk workout "Hit It And Quit It" (featuring the great Bernie Worrell on organ), and "Can You Get To That," one of the sunniest, most memorable funk-gospel-soul songs in the band's--or anyone's--catalogue. MAGGOT BRAIN is unquestionably one of rock and funk's all-time classics.

Uncut (p.122) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[With] a title track that's a bare showcase for Eddie Hazel's 10-minute guitar solo of mournful commitment."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.52) - Ranked #4 in Mojo's "The 50 Most Out There Albums Of All Time" - "The music, seismic and bold, melds fright-inducing lyrics with a transcendental backdrop."

5 stars authentic funk/rock
IF you've ever imagined what it would be like to be in the front row of a Hendrix concert the title cut may be as close as you can get. If you've ever played air guitar to Clapton, Page or Vaughn this CD is without question "a must have". Eddie Hazel ranks up there with the best.

5 stars Revolutionary
Even though I grew up Funkadelic, this IS Funkadelic. This album was limited by the l.p. format so 'Hit It & Quit It' and 'Back In Our Minds' are far too short. The two instrumentals (Maggot.../Wars...) are so mind altering even, now, almost 40 years later. 'Can You Get To That' was a slogan of the times, like "solid". "Revolution is a fad-funky person". Can you get to that?

My fiance is a musician. Maggot Brain brings back memories as he being one of the first people to have it in his town when it first came out. He was very pleased when I presented it to him. Thanks cd universe Cheryl Mathis

Tas’ brand new 2008 release, gravi-Tas builds on the home-cooked country kitchen flavor of his solo acoustic 2006 Biscuit, but thickened by the young power blues trio, the Slow Happy Boys, and seasoned with the keyboard work of longtime sideman, G.C. “Chip” Lamson. The eleven original songs written by Cru prove that he is first a storyteller. His well-crafted lyrics are testimony to his growing reputation as the master of the “triple” entendre with songs that invite interpretation that is felt – not merely heard then understood. With acoustic grinders like 12 Step Woman, the hillstomper, Feel I’m Fallin, and resonator-driven blues like Cover My Love and Peach Pickin, Cru draws from a range of styles, but never veers too far from his country blues home. On gravi-Tas, Cru handles the lead vocals and the harmonica and resonator guitar work. Chip Lamson (keyboards) and Jeremy Walz (guitar) contribute backing vocals. The rhythm section is comprised of Josh Bloomfield (drums) and Chris Wroblewski (bass). Lamson is Cru’s seasoned sideman who performs with Cru as an acoustic duo and serves as music director for band shows. Walz, Bloomfield and Wroblewski taken together are the Slow Happy Boys, an Albany, NY based jamband/blues power trio with heavy performance credentials who have backed national acts touring through the Capital Region.Tas Cru is a rough Quebecois rendering meaning - Raw Potato. Credit for the name goes to an avid young fan who admires Tas' raw-edged vocals and peeled-bare approach to the slide guitar. Given Tas' bent on bowing to his home region's Quebecois influence the moniker was not much of a stretch, especially since much of Tas’ early career was spent playing Quebec's small cities and towns along the St. Lawrence river from Montreal to Riviere du Loup. Cru is currently based out of Albany, New York but has performed at festivals and clubs throughout the Mid South including shows in Tulsa, Memphis, and the Mississippi Delta. He has shared the stage with a growing list of well known blues artists that includes Buddy Guy, Shemekia Copeland, Willie Smith, Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Kenny Neal, Jimmy Thackeray, Danny Kalb, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Nora Jean Bruso, Albert Cummings, Bob Margolin and others. Also to his credit include frequent appearances at Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi ...
