Lonnie was just past his Billboard R&B Chart best at the time of his earliest recordings here; his biggest hit had been 1948's "Tomorrow Night." His final R&B chart entry was his cover of Paul Gayten's "Confused" which went to #11 in Feb. 1950. Tracks: T

Although blues legend Lonnie Johnson had an impressively lengthy heyday in the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, the New Orleans-born singer/guitarist also released many fine tunes in the '50s. This 2005 compilation focuses on Johnson's late-'40s/early '50s singles, including jazz-tinged blues numbers such as "Confused," "Nothin' But Trouble," and "Me and My Crazy Self." Irresistible smokey, late-night blues.

Personnel: Lonnie Johnson (vocals, guitar); Simeon Hatch (piano); Franklyn Skeete (bass instrument); Leon Abramson (drums).

Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical ...

Soul belter J.J. Jackson is best known for his 1967 smash, "But It's Alright," but he has some fine singles and a couple of excellent albums as well, and 1967's But It's Alright on the Calla label is one of them. Kicking off with the infectious title track, the record alternates between ...

This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions ...

Made In America
Blues Brothers Made In America CD  (1980)

1949-1952 songs
CD $10.49  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded live at the Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, California. "Soul Finger" includes portions of "Funky Broadway." "Do You Love Me" includes portions of "Mother Popcorn." Like the Grateful Dead or the Minutemen, the Blues Brothers are a band that, regardless of their own quality, ultimately did more harm than good by influencing an endless stream of horrible imitations. This pet project of John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd featured top session players and had great taste in song selection, but Jake and Elwood also spawned thousands of terrible white R&B cover bands and made possible the soulless House of Blues franchise. Made in America is easily the band's weakest album; Briefcase Full of Blues has a sincere grit and energy and the Blues Brothers original soundtrack is filled with vibrant guest spots from ringers like Aretha Franklin and James Brown. On this third release, however, after the propulsive opening salvo of "Soul Finger" and "Who's Making Love?," everything slows down and the highlights become thin. "Do You Love Me" is clumsy and "I Ain't Got You" is by the numbers. ...

Demonophonic Blues
Tony C & The Truth Demonophonic Blues CD  (2004) Edited; Enhanced CD

1949-1952 songs
CD $10.25  Audio Samples
Somewhat like the result of Tom Waits and Kid Rock sharing the stage, Tony C. & the Truth play gritty party music that resonates with individuality partly due to their lead singer's compelling and distinctive personality. DJ Prestige spins the beats that pepper this music, adding an inner-city tinge to the band's tough rock and gutsy funk. On paper it doesn't sound particularly inviting, but the production by Kyle Kelso keeps the loose edges taut and the music in the pocket. Just when you think you've figured out their angle, the bandmembers introduce an unexpected sample or a swampy power chord, twisting the sound in a different direction. The slow, gooey Southern feel of "Got It Made" takes a slide guitar and layers on chunky arena-sized guitars to detonate in an alternately gruff and subtle power ballad. Tony C.'s boomy six-pack-a-day voice recalls Omar Dykes of Omar & the Howlers, especially when he steamrolls through the ZZ Top-ish "One for the Road." The whiskey-soaked gospel groove of "No Pain" is another sudden turn and one that also works astonishingly well within ...
