The challenge with dark electro music is always to differentiate oneself from the competition while still staying within the strict conventions of the genre. Jasyn Bangert, who records as God Module with the help of vocalist/keyboardist Courtney Bangert and keyboardist Byron C. Miller, strikes the balance between conformity and individuality by keeping his arrangements a little bit less dense and claustrophobic than those of his colleagues, while giving the genre police all the simplistic beats, minor key synth riffs, and thin, harshly grating vocals that they require. Oh, and also by covering the Cure, which is a pretty good joke, especially since Bangert's version of "A Night Like This" is so completely deconstructed and emptied of melody that you'd probably never recognize it if you didn't read the notes. Other, more subtle departures from the darkwave norm include the relatively slow and almost tender "Still So Strange" and "Sections," a song written in 12/8 that prominently features the cool, dispassionate singing of Courtney Bangert, whose voice is a welcome reprieve from the hissing malevolence that dominates elsewhere. But then, if you had a problem with hissing malevolence you wouldn't have put this disc in the player to begin with. ~ Rick Anderson

Some song or album titles have a way of letting you know exactly what type of music to expect. If a title uses terms like "thugged-out gangsta bitch," "the chronic," or "bling-bling," chances are you can expect hardcore rap. If a title mentions "Jah Rastafari," "ganja," "rude boys," or "natty dread," reggae is probably on the menu. And when a CD has a title like Spiritual Beings on a Human Journey, the logical assumption is that you're getting new age -- which is exactly what this album is. Anael has often been compared to fellow new age vocalist Enya -- and, to be sure, there are some parallels. Both favor a tranquil, peaceful approach, both are known for spiritual lyrics, and both are female vocalists in a genre that is dominated by instrumentalists. But Enya, for all her tranquility, has more of an edge than Anael -- and Quebec native Anael isn't as Celtic-influenced as Ireland's ...

Arguably K.C. & The Sunshine Band's best album and certainly one of its most successful, Part 3 will always be closely identified with the disco era. But for all the disco appeal that infectious gems like "Shake Your Booty," "I Like to Do It," "Baby I Love You" and "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" have, they also illustrate that this was very much a funk band. In fact, when the Floridians toured with the Ohio Players in 1976, it seemed a logical combination. Perhaps the most overtly disco-sounding hit on this album was "Keep It Coming Love," a fine example of K.C. at his most charismatic. In 1995, Rhino reissued Part 3 on CD as Part 3...And More, adding some of K.C.'s early-'80s solo work as bonus tracks. The songs demonstrate that while KC's popularity had faded, his unapologetic funkiness definitely hadn't. ~ Alex Henderson
When the original LP version of Part 3 came out in 1976, it received more than its share of negative reviews from rock critics. As they saw it, KC's funk/soul/disco was exactly the type of mindless, hedonistic escapism that punk rock was rebelling against. But the critics who lambasted KC missed out on the most important element of all: feeling. Gems like "Shake Your Booty," "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" and "I Like to Do It" may not have either Marvin Gaye's sociopolitical bite or Earth, Wind & Fire's spirituality, but they have a wealth of soul and boast infectious grooves that simply won't quit. Those grooves held up well over time, and by the time Rhino reissued Part 3 as Part 3...And More in 1995, many of its selections had been sampled extensively by one hip-hopper after another, long after KC's name had disappeared from the charts.
