One of the best soul-jazz guitarists of the 1950s and '60s, Kenny Burrell's cool-toned bop technique graced several important Blue Note records of the era. This excellent 14-track compilation, selected by the artist himself, culls the best of that work, and amounts to a shining portrait of Burrell's accomplishments. Groove classics like "Chitlins Con Carne" are here, as are moody takes on standards ("But Not For Me"). Burrell's accompanists include the likes of Herbie Hancock, Ray Barretto, Art Blakey, Jimmy Smith, and Paul Chambers, making for a veritable Blue Note all-star team. Burrell's liner notes also give the whole package a nice personal touch.

Vol. 3 of the Hampton Hawes Quartet's All Night Session contains three spontaneously improvised variations on the blues, one very cool extended rendition of Duke Ellington's "Do Nothin' 'Till You Hear from Me" and a strikingly handsome treatment of Harold Arlen's "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea." The briskly paced "Blues #4" is especially progressive and exciting. Apparently "Blues of a Sort" was a warm-up performance, as voices are audible (discussing a football game!) in the background during the bass solo. For this one-take marathon late-night session of November 12 and 13, 1956, Hawes chose to share the studio with guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Red Mitchell and drummer Eldridge "Bruz" Freeman, who had replaced Chuck Thompson following that musician's sudden inability to continue touring with the group earlier that year. "We gave Chuck what money we could and left him sitting on a hospital cot in a white bathrobe." This grim image, like much of Hawes' autobiography Raise Up Off Me, paints a stark picture of the narcotics epidemic among jazz musicians during the '50s. Of all the talented young trumpeters to emerge in the late 1950s, few were gifted with the astonishing technical aptitude of Indianapolis native Freddie Hubbard. Whereas friend, contemporary and erstwhile rival Lee Morgan seemed to reflect the braggadocio of Dizzy Gillespie, Hubbard was more in tune with the supple airborne phrasing of Clifford Brown, which is why drummer Art Blakey brought Hubbard into the Jazz Messengers to supersede Morgan--figuring he would prove a less dominating foil for the emerging talents of tenor saxophonist and musical director, Wayne Shorter.
Not that Hubbard lacked fire. It's just that his harmonic sensibility and chops were so refined, he was able to approximate the fluidity of a saxophonist--which is why the young virtuoso got the nod for special projects by Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane. The latter's shadow looms prominently over the proceedings on READY FOR FREDDIE, Hubbard's fourth and most compelling date as a leader: Wayne Shorter is still discovering his own way through Coltrane-ish phrases and harmonic devices, Bernard McKinney's euphonium provides a stark contrasting timbre, while the rhythm section from OLE COLTRANE confers a supple, shifting groove to the proceedings.
