Antonio Says album
$7.05 Well, at least they didn't name it Rusty Trombone. Dirty Sanchez's debut EP doesn't scrimp on the sleaze -- it can't, because that's really the L.A. trio's only trick, besides the rudimentary buzz of neo-electro beats backing up this brief clutch of dirty jokes. "I'm on my knees/Then I'm on my back/And you're suckin' on my toes like you're smokin' crack"; "Look at you with my hand down your pants/Check you out gettin' f***ed while we dance" -- Sanchez mouthpieces Jackie Beat and Mario Diaz keep it trashy and simple, limiting their exhortations during "Dig It" and the novelty bump of "Fucking on the Dance Floor" to a middle-school bathroom graffiti level. Cheeky references to "Terri Nunn bangs" aside, the most interesting thing about Really Rich Italian Satanists is its potty-mouthed cover of Soft Cell's "Sex Dwarf." Its presence ties Dirty Sanchez's electroclash novelty present to the prurience of past fetishists like the Cell, Revolting Cocks, and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Nomi Song DVD (2005) Widescreen
Antonio Says CD music
$17.35 Known throughout the 1980s as a cult figure on the New Wave scene, Klaus Nomi managed to perfectly marry disparate worlds such as rock, pop, opera, and performance art. Nomi lit-up the underground throughout the '80s with his bizarre and freakish appearance, and had a penchant for twisting his counter tenor vocals around a hook-laden pop song. His fanbase grew, and it looked as if Nomi's star was on a collision course with the mainstream. But the fun came to a desperately tragic end when Nomi succumbed to the dark spectre of AIDS. The disease which ended the lives of so many artists in this turbulent decade callously claimed another victim, and the dream came to an abrupt, hurtful end.
Director Andrew Horn draws on a mixture of vintage footage and celebrity testimonials to flesh out Nomi's tale in this documentary, offering a moving portrait of an artist who strived for originality, and was cruelly ...

| | Grace Jones Hurricane CD (2008)
Antonio Says CD music
$12.79 After 19 years, Grace Jones finally releases a new studio album, and it's a weird one, nostalgic and timeless in equal measure. Her collaborators (including Brian Eno, Tricky, Wendy & Lisa, Sly & Robbie, Tony Allen, and others) set up instrumental backdrops that explicitly recall not only her own early-'80s albums, but also those albums' influence on the later work of Massive Attack, Tricky, et al. At the same time, Jones' old lyrical persona -- the androgynous cyber-demon who uses scorn as an erotic weapon -- has been largely abandoned; only on "Corporate Cannibal" does that version of her reappear, atop a track that sounds inspired by Massive Attack's "Inertia Creeps." Instead, we get a nostalgic, autobiographical Grace Jones, which is interesting and pretty much totally unexpected. The songs "William's Blood" and "I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)" find the now 60-year-old Jones looking back on her childhood in Jamaica, recalling her mother singing in church and comforting her as a nightmare-stricken little girl. Her voice changes on these songs; ...
| | Essential Sarah Vaughan - The Great Songs CD (1992)
Antonio Says music CDs
$9.05 Sarah Vaughan was blessed with one of the strongest and most indelible voices of the 20th century. Her ability to caress a note, scat on the level of Ella Fitzgerald, and jump octaves as if she was a saxophonist made her truly one of a kind. Known as "the Divine One," Vaughan performed interpretations of jazz standards that rival any of her contemporaries.
THE ESSENTIAL SARAH VAUGHAN captures some of Vaughan's most diverse recorded moments. She is presented in three different contexts on this compilation, backed by a remarkable array of musicians. Her scaled-down trio versions of "All of Me," "I Cried for You," and "Speak Low" (featuring pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes) show off Vaughan's jazzier side, while orchestral renditions of "A Sinner Kissed an Angel," "My Man's Gone Now," and others highlight her pop leanings. Vaughan's big-band numbers, however, make up the album's hottest tracks. On "No Count Blues," she trades licks with trumpeter Thad Jones, and, on the swinging "Just One of Those Things," ...
