It's unclear precisely which definition of their name Hinder prefer: "to impede progress" or "the outdated midwestern slang term for the buttocks." Both fit, because Hinder is an unapologetic throwback to the post-Guns 'n' Roses era of hard rock, when dudes like Poison and Motley Crue ditched their glam look in favor of a grungier "street" vibe and a tougher-edged sound. Their unapologetically smirking lyrics teeter right on the brink of outright sexism throughout songs like "Get Stoned" and "Homecoming Queen." As with the Darkness, part of the fun of EXTREME BEHAVIOR is that it's impossible to tell how seriously it's supposed to be taken.
Hinder: Mark King (vocals, guitar, piano); Joe "Blower" Garvey (vocals, guitar); Mike Rodden (vocals, bass guitar); Austin Winkler (vocals); Cody Hanson (drums).
Recording information: Armoury Studios, Vancouver, Canada (2005).

Extreme Behavior
$10.79 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, streamlined brand of heavy alternative rock with occasional detours into the rhythmic funk-metal territory inhabited by Limp Bizkit and Korn.
With strong melodies reminiscent of Staind or Incubus at their most accessible, the Pennsylvania combo makes good use of soaring vocal harmonies and unusual production touches (the piano intro on "Breakdown" and the swirling, phase-shifting guitars on "Believe") to separate itself from the heavy-rock pack. On "Forget It" and the closing ...
| | Theory Of A Deadman Gasoline CD (2005)
Extreme Behavior
$14.39 On Theory of a Deadman's 2002 hit debut, the band combined the heavy riffs of nu-metal with a grunge-revival vocal style that often recalled Creed and Nickelback. The latter comparison makes sense, of course, as Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger co-wrote many of the record's tunes, and Theory was the first signing to his 604 Records imprint. With GASOLINE, however, the band took Kroeger's well-developed melodic sense and ran with it, delivering a disc bristling with catchy tunes, unafraid to dispense with the grunge formula.
Like Stone Temple Pilots, Theory of a Deadman is a pop band at heart, often singing about love and relationships gone wrong over a wide variety of musical textures. "No Surprise" employs an old-school 1970s-rock shuffle beat, while "Hello Lonely (Walk Away from This)" is based on a funky syncopated chord progression reminiscent of Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye." "In the Middle" is a tuneful ballad ...
| | Nickelback All The Right Reasons CD (2005)
Extreme Behavior
$14.79 As always, frontman Chad Kroeger's gritty voice remains Nickelback's calling card, and his emotive singing carries every tune, most notably the nostalgic "Photograph" and "Far Away," a tender, echo-laden ballad. Kroger has never met a guitar effect that he didn't like, as evidenced by the revved-up "Next Contestant," which relates the, ahem, difficulties of having a beautiful girlfriend. Though ALL THE RIGHT REASONS is slightly more eclectic than the group's past releases, it's unmistakably a Nickelback outing, and fans of the band are sure to be pleased.
On 2005's ALL THE RIGHT REASONS, the Canadian heavy-rock band Nickelback offers up more of its straightforward, guitar-fueled ...

| | Three Days Grace One - X CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Extreme Behavior
$9.69 The 2006 sophomore effort from alt-metal outfit Three Days Grace holds steady on the muscular guitars, accessible melodies, and dark themes of the band's debut. Fans of the first album will find more of the group's sound--which owes a debt to both Alice in Chains and nu-metal bands like Godsmack--to like here, but a sharper version of it. There is plenty of anguish and ennui in the band's ...
| | Breaking Benjamin Phobia CD (2006)
Extreme Behavior
$12.59 On its third full-length album, PHOBIA, the Pennsylvania-based heavy-rock act Breaking Benjamin offers up another potent round of moody, riff-laden tunes. While "The Diary of Jane" revels in sheer ferocity and recalls Bush, the emotive "Breath" carries ...

Extreme Behavior
$7.59 In the wake of its 1986 album HEYDAY (arguably the finest album of the band's first phase of existence), '80s college rock fave the Church found itself in a position to capitalize on its success. Its follow-up album, STARFISH (1988), contains some of the band's biggest hits, including "Under the Milky Way," while in no way compromising the band's artistic stance--making it one of a notable group of albums that bridge the ...
