It's unclear precisely which definition of their name Hinder prefer: "to impede progress" or "the outdated midwestern slang term for the buttocks." Both fit, because Hinder is an unapologetic throwback to the post-Guns 'n' Roses era of hard rock, when dudes like Poison and Motley Crue ditched their glam look in favor of a grungier "street" vibe and a tougher-edged sound. Their unapologetically smirking lyrics teeter right on the brink of outright sexism throughout songs like "Get Stoned" and "Homecoming Queen." As with the Darkness, part of the fun of EXTREME BEHAVIOR is that it's impossible to tell how seriously it's supposed to be taken.
Hinder: Mark King (vocals, guitar, piano); Joe Garvey (vocals, guitar); Mike Rodden (vocals, bass guitar); Austin Winkler (vocals); Cody Hanson (drums).

Extreme Behavior album
$10.45 When Aaron Fink and Markus James left Universal Records act Lifer to join the then-unsigned Breaking Benjamin, many hard-rock fans were skeptical. WE ARE NOT ALONE, the latter band's sophomore effort, promises to silence the naysayers for good. Led by powerful vocalist Ben Burnley, Breaking Benjamin delivers a snap-tight, ...
| | Theory Of A Deadman Gasoline CD (2005)
Extreme Behavior CD music
$14.39 Like Stone Temple Pilots, Theory of a Deadman is a pop band at heart, often singing about love and relationships gone wrong over a wide variety of musical textures. "No Surprise" employs an old-school 1970s-rock shuffle beat, while "Hello Lonely (Walk Away from This)" is based on a funky syncopated chord progression reminiscent of Jeff Buckley's "Last Goodbye." "In the Middle" is a tuneful ballad that could ...

| | Jessamine Don't Stay Too Long CD (1998)
Extreme Behavior music CDs
$12.95 The final Jessamine album proper was also a definite break from most of the band's previous work on a number of levels. Not only was it the shortest of them all, clocking in under 40 minutes spread out over seven songs, but Smithson took the lead vocals on them all, her voice sounding like a combination between the earlier psych-semi-bliss and a bit of late-night blues. Similarly, the music had a more downbeat, shadowy feeling -- not that Jessamine's work in earlier days couldn't have that tendency, but there's a sense throughout that the tendency towards subtler brain-melters has now resulted in songs that suggest as much as deliver. The active funk of "Pilot-Free Ignition" suggests the likes of Can, to be sure, but without turning into endless monster beats and vibes (or alternately the slick grooves of, say, Stereolab, though Smithson's vocals on the ominous strut of "Continuous" suggest that band). Brown's keyboard work more than once calls up the rainy day mystery of Ray Manzarek -- opening track "Elsewards," in particular, has a shadowy "Riders on the Storm" vibe towards the end -- while there's less traversing the space lines and more moody nightclub moves. Where Jessamine sounds more like its past, as with ...

| | Bauhaus 1979-1983: Vol. 2 CD (Import) Import
Extreme Behavior CD music
$19.69 Understandably complementing the first volume, 1979-1983: Vol. 1 is as similarly bereft of any sort of packaging notes as its predecessor, but is also as successful at pulling together many of Bauhaus' best moments from its later career into one knock-your-socks-off release. More Mask numbers crop up here -- two funk-heavy groovers ("In Fear of Fear" and "Kick in the Eye"), counterpointed by the slow, haunting "Hollow Hills." The Sky's Gone Out is cherry-picked for some of its best moments, including "Swing the Heartache" and "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything," though the version of "Spirit" is the less effective single re-recording rather than the dramatic album take. Rather tellingly, only three songs from Burning From the Inside are included -- "She's in Parties," the David J-sung "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?," and the Daniel Ash number "Slice of Life." Added to all of this are the peerless covers of "Ziggy Stardust" and "Third Uncle," a couple of ringers from earlier in the band's career ("Satori" and "Crowds"), ...

| | Beloved Failure On CD (2003) Us
Extreme Behavior songs
$12.59 Some think that hardcore punk has been vitiated by the many artists who have appropriated some of its stylistic trappings and draped them over other, less intense rock subgenres. Others see such cross-pollination as proof of hardcore's enduring vitality and continued relevance; two decades after critics first pronounced punk dead. Beloved is obviously a band from the latter camp; it prides itself on fusing emo and melodic indie rock elements with hardcore's emotional bluster and turbulent guitar roar, and ...
