Brazilian rock act Pitty presents ANACRONICO featuring 13 tracks on their sophomore release.
Immediately after her debut, 26-year-old Pitty, from the state of Bahia, was dubbed (by some of the media) Brazil's new rock sensation and the natural heir to aging rock legends like Rita Lee. Although the comparisons between Pitty and the legends and pioneers of Brazilian rock were very much exaggerated, Pitty has once again shown that she clearly is a talented songwriter and a charismatic performer with Anacrônico, the follow-up to her successful debut. She has carved out a well-deserved place as one of Brazil's leading rock stars, with her fan base mostly among the country's teenagers. Just as on Admirável Chip Novo, there is nothing revolutionary about the music here. It is all about basic, heavy rock without unnecessary embellishments, but with its own genuine style and sound. The hit "Memórias," with its raging guitars, and the calmer yet powerful "Déjà Vu" and "Brinquedo Torto" are excellent rock songs, virtually vibrating with energy. Other fine tracks that stand out are the hardcore punk "Aahhh...!" and the mildly political "Quem Vai Queimar?" Admirável Chip Novo was a strong and promising debut by this hard-rocking Bahia girl, and Anacrônico brings more of the same, only better. ~ Philip Jandovsky

Anacronico album
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart of the listener with his pure, emotive tone.

| | Best Of The Guess Who CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Anacronico CD music
$6.75 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

| | Dead Can Dance Aion CD (1990) Reissue; Special Edition
Anacronico music CDs
$11.99 The music of Dead Can Dance has long been a favorite of the "Goth" crowd; however, AION is really the first one of the band's records that can actually be called Gothic in the classic, renaissance sense. Arguably Dead Can Dance's most successful record, it contains the band's most consistent set of songs since SPLEEN AND IDEAL. Widening their view to encompass more of the ancient world than with earlier records, Dead Can Dance explore styles from Northern Europe ("The Song of the Sibyl") to the Middle East ("Radharc"), with stops along the way at a number of other surprising locations.
The fact that it is based on a 16th-century Catalan chant notwithstanding, portions of "The Song of the Sibyl" are eerily reminiscent of the experimental side of David Bowie's LOW. Standouts include "Saltarello," which was adapted from a 14th-century Italian dance and played on bagpipes, drums, and tambourine; "Fortune Presents Gifts Not According to the Book," where even Brendan Perry's English-language vocals sound ...

| | Baka Beyond Journey Between CD (1998)
Anacronico album
$10.59 The gentle, rhythmic percussion of Cameroon's Baka pygmies meets more ornate Northern European musical traditions in this wonderfully exotic, yet hauntingly familiar blending of cultures. Guitarist Martin Cradick and his wife, singer Su Hart, lived for a time with the Baka people (in a West African rain forest relatively devoid of Western influences) studying and playing their music, and have borrowed from it traditional instruments and a distinctly lustrous energy. Cradick blends Baka-inspired music with Ghanian rhythms and Irish and Scottish influences, among many others, in JOURNEY BETWEEN. This album is the latest chapter in a continuing series of records exploring these global connections, featuring musicians from Britain, France, Ghana, and Senegal, with violinist Paddy Le Mercier and Cradick himself providing a strongly Celtic sensibility to the album, ...
