Juliana Diniz CD music
$10.55 Love's a Real Thing is an excellent introduction into the wild sound world of West Africa in the '70s. As Ronnie Graham points out in his superb liner notes, the '60s were a time of assimilation for much of the popular music of Africa. Many bands were playing a hybrid of Latin and African music typified by the Congolese rhumba of Franco & OK Jazz. The '70s were a different bag, though, with the heavy electric sounds of Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Cream, and others seeping into the consciousness of a new generation of Africans who were also contending with their own emerging sense of identity. The results are raucous, exuberant melting pots of funky soul, psychedelic rock, and honey-sweet Latin horns mixed through the sensibilities of extremely talented African bands on the cusp of developing styles like soukous, mbalax, and Afro-beat. Senegal's Star Band Number One (aka Etoile de Dakar and confusingly billed here as No. 1 de No. 1), were already seasoned veterans by the dawn of the 1970s, and the sound of their "Guajira Van" with its sinewy fuzz guitar solo and talking drum stabs is glorious proto-mbalax. Elsewhere, there are songs more directly inspired by rock and soul. "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & the Black Company has a heavy acid rock guitar lead competing with a conga ...

Juliana Diniz music CDs
$14.65 This excellent disc is notable not only for its breadth but also for the outstanding quality of the recordings. While not every nation is represented, the variety of musical forms shatters the popular conception that Native American music is "primitive." ~ Tim Sheridan

$12.69 What Is "DaySick"?DaySick is a "blue-collar", nose-to-the-grindstone rock the way it was meant to be played -- not some "bubblegum" corporate version of it. Listening to DaySick "live" is a virtual journey through the back alleys of life, and your senses are flooded with sweet memories and raw regrets -- the way life really is. The way you -- and we -- really are. No soda commercials, no choreography, no baby-faced marketing; just the hard jams we love.We are rock for people who THEMSELVES rock -- the hard-working "common" man and woman. We're not some "ear candy" for a Yuppie convention. (Mochacchino for us? Hell no.) Hearing us leaves a three-day aftertaste in your mouth that you STILL won't want to wash away. DaySick is the recollection of "that one great party", your first love/heartbreak, and that cranky old algebra teacher you can't forget, all rolled into one. It's "the morning after"; you'd rather stay home and hang out than go to work, school, appointments or virtually anything else. The Roots of Our RockDaySick began in Rogers, Arkansas in 1999 as Stronghold, a studio band put together to showcase the songwriting talents of musician Doug Corbino. The current members of DaySick in this inaugural effort included lead singer Jon Easterling, a longtime songwriting partner and close friend Doug Corbino had worked with in the 80's band "Silent Rage"; and Doug Doyle, a local drummer who had returned to the area after playing the Southern California music scene. Over the next two years, Stronghold eventually changed its name to DaySick, the title of a song on Doug Corbino's solo CD "Life's Colors." The development of DaySick as a local rock influence was a result of two very distinct personnel changes, including the addition of seasoned bassist Vince Corbino, Doug's nephew -- fresh out of the US Army in the summer of 2001, and performance-tested both in American and foreign club gigs. Ironically, Doug Corbino was to leave the band shortly thereafter due to other personal commitments, and was subsequently replaced by master guitarist J. R. Clark.J.R. is now the back bone to the new DaySick giving the band a much harder edge.DaySick began to quickly cultivate and enjoy its loyal and feverish support in Northwest Arkansas, including performances and promotions involving local charity organizations as well as being a "regular act" on the regional music scene. The band was nonetheless dealt a sudden twist of tragic fate in May 2002, when bassplayer Vince Corbino suffered serious (although fortunately non-fatal) injuries from a motorcycle accident. Vince is currently rehabilitating from this incident, with best hopes and wishes of his bandmates and supporters. In the interim, DaySick was fortunate to land the services of master bass player Jason Downing to continue playing out the band's local club date commitments and bookings.A Work in ProgressThe current (and new) DaySick, while having a harder edge to their music, still retain the same blues-based, beat-driven and ...
