While most of Universal's excellent GOLD collections present an artist's output in tidy chronological order, the Pete Townshend installment of the series breaks with that tradition, offering a seemingly random two-disc sampling of the Who mastermind's solo output. Given the British guitarist/vocalist's unconventional, drama-loving attitude toward rock, however, this approach works quite well, bouncing around from 1993's PSYCHODERELICT to '85's WHITE CITY to '80's EMPTY GLASS. The 34-track compilation also includes songs from Townshend's first solo outing, '72's WHO CAME FIRST, and '77's ROUGH MIX, his excellent collaborative album with former Small Faces bassist Ronnie Lane. Throughout the highly eclectic GOLD, the constants are, of course, Townshend's plaintive voice and his distinctive guitar playing, which ranges from delicate acoustic lines to bombastic Who-worthy electric leads. Although there have been numerous Townshend compilations, GOLD is the most intriguing and comprehensive. Pete Townshend Gold Songs Gold Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Pete at his Pinnacle Great collection. If you only know Pete from The Who you are missing a lot. The passion and drive of The Who is here but the songs are much deeper, personal, and reflective. Especially appreciate his frank explaination of the songs,it makes the work even more powerful. A superb job on the re-master, real clean, clear, excellent. Some "collections" are filled with fodder not here. Buy it and listen to it often. You will be impressed. The man has a gift. A True Artist Within the Who, Pete Townshend wrote songs for the band and the audience. He was therefore limited to writing power rock songs that attempted to express the thoughts and desires of others. Solo, Townshend wrote a much more eclectic and personal mix of songs, making his solo recordings an essential extension of his work with the Who.
This compilation is a terrific overview of his mainstream releases. (There is nothing here from his awsome three album, six disk Scoop series of demos, or from any of his excellent live performances.) Although "Parvardigar" may be difficult to get behind for those not enamored with Eastern religion, every song here is excellent musically, while offering special insight into the soul of a true musical artist. Absolutely Phenomenal You just have to listen to Pete's solo stuff to understand "Who" the mastermind was! Taking nothing away from the other band members, because each was great at what he did! Daltrey the vocalist, Moon the drummer, Entwhistle the whistler! Pete, though, could pretty much do it all! Outside of being a bit eccentric and off the wall which many artists are, a true hall of famer "Who's" music will never cease to satisfy the curious audiophile. As good or better as a solo artist as any of the Beatles! He could have been one! His solo efforts are probably even better collectively than the "Who"! Gold album
$10.75 With this album, years of personnel changes ended for Fleetwood Mac with the departure of guitarist Bob Welch. The remaining core of the group (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie) invited guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks to join, and thus began the most commercially successful period for Fleetwood Mac. With 3 strong songwriters in Nicks, Buckingham and Christine McVie, FLEETWOOD MAC was their first number-1 album.
It's unfair to say that Fleetwood Mac had no pop pretensions prior to the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the lineup in 1975. When they were lead by Bob Welch they often flirted with pop, even recording the first version of the unabashedly smooth and sappy "Sentimental Lady," which would later be one of the defining ...
| | Rockpile Seconds Of Pleasure CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gold CD music
$7.59 The CD contains the four songs from the bonus EP--NICK LOWE & DAVE EDMUNDS SING THE EVERLY BROTHERS--included with the original LP release.
Kindred spirits Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe had worked together extensively in different capacities in the 1970s, but their on-again/off-again band Rockpile only recorded one album, 1980's superlative SECONDS OF PLEASURE. It stands as one of the finest examples of the pub-rock/power-pop crossroads that defined the band's aesthetic. Edmunds and Lowe's American influences are worn on the sleeve (literally), as they spark new life into tunes by Chuck Berry ("Oh What a Thrill") and soul man Joe Tex ("If Sugar Was as Sweet as You").
Incredibly, the duo's own compositions stand up just as well. "When I Write the Book" would have been a standout on any classic Sam & Dave LP, and "Heart" is a finer faux-Motown piece than one could ever expect from a bunch of Brits. This 2004 ...

| | Eric Clapton CDs (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Gold album
$25.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
With this, his first solo album, Eric Clapton did a complete 180 from his work of the previous five years. Gone were the long, jazzy solos and rootsy Chicago blues work. In their place, Clapton was stretching as a singer and seeking to define his own song forms, inspired by the Beatles, the Band, and his new found collaborators from the southern R&B circuit, Delaney And Bonnie.
ERIC CLAPTON marks Clapton's first use of the Fender Stratocaster. Its high, wirey, percussive sound stands in stark contrast to the dark, fat, singing Gibson sounds Clapton had ...
